- After Kenya’s independence, Jericho was formed as a settlement specifically for the African working class. It was built with help from the Israeli government. Jericho houses are currently owned by the Nairobi City County, which is led by a Governor. All of the homes are the same shape and size. They are double storied houses with one tenant living on the ground floor and another on the top floor. Most of the area’s companies use the outside of these houses as advertising space and in return they paint the inside of the home for the resident(s). Most of these houses are occupied by young men who have inherited the homes from their parents who have either relocated to the rural areas or died. Due to lack of constant income, many home owners rent rooms within the houses for profit. The tenants pay an average of 2,500 to 3,000 KShs (Kenyan shilling) for their occupancy.
Jericho was home to the late Kisoi Munyao, the man who hoisted the Kenyan Flag on Mt. Kenya on 12 December 1963 during independence day. It was also home to the late,[1] the late Bildad Kaggia, Mzee Teacher (Karate legend). Robert Napunyi Wangila is still the only Kenyan Olympic boxing gold medalist even 22 years after his death. He was a celebrated Kenyan boxer who won gold medal in 1988 summer Olympic games. He was born and raised in Jericho estate in Nairobi. and many others..
It was the home of Barack Obama, Sr., a senior economist in the Kenyan Ministry of Finance, his first wife, and their children.[citation needed] Obama is the father of United States President Barack Obama by his second wife.
Jericho is known to be the home of many famous Kenyan football players. The main football field in Jericho, otherwise known as "TOYOYO STADIUM" has produced many players that have gone on to play in the Kenyan national team (Harambee Stars) and also professionally in Europe. Most notable among these are John "Shoto" Lukoye, Benard "Zico" Otieno, Jacob "Ghost" Mulee, George Olubendi among others.

when we grew up Lumush and Jeri in those days, the City Council was Alive we grew up with all the social amenities, streets were swept clean, landscaping was maintained grass cut, and bougainvillea flowers were planted all over the estates, roadkill was cleaned out and the area disinfected, dispensaries had ambulances on standby, Garbage was collected on time and every house had a city-issued garbage bin and the city used Mercedes Benz Garbage compactor trucks we used to call then "KUKA" so for us who left the country in the '80s moving abroad was like moving to an upper-class neighborhood. But in the late '80s and '90s, everything went to the dogs! I pity today's generation because they missed out.

Jericho lumumba where I grew up in the 80s,schooled in st michaels..its been a while,nice to see it again..Buru used to be the bush we used to go hunt 🐇 out there ..wangila napunyi was from jeri
use to hunt for waruru's and rabbits in makonge 1 and makonge 2 before Buru Ph2 to 5 was built and Embakasi Airport was visible from our house planes landing and taking off!

Yes, there are many different neighborhood in Kenya each with it's own characteristics. This particular area was known for tough guys and great footballers..others are known for other things..There is also an economic factor eg the next neighborhood Buru was more economically wealthy. This could a good series

The irony, in the entire republic of Kenya, this hood has the most social amenities .....ample schools, social halls, football fields, dispensaries...

The story of Jericho Estate is vast and cannot be adequately narrated by a single individual. For instance, there is Jericho Lumumba and Jericho Ofafa. Then there were teenage gangs in the 1970's such as the Yakuzas, Comaches, Companieros and Dambusters who marked out their turf by painting their names elaborate logos on the walls marking their spheres of influence. The gangs also dabbled in low-level fights against each other with the ocassional kinife wound here and there. It was this culture that was nurtured by books such as "James Hadley Chase" to result in thugs such as Walimba (ostensibly a Ugandan and Wakinyonga) at the higher echelons while Gwanga Wa Yesu operated within Jericho Ofafa back when Shimoli was still pre-teen. Interestingly, Jericho Lumumba had a notorous gang based near Martin Luther primary school with their base known as Masasu Park. The Masasu Park crew of misfits attracted the first of a new breed of armed robbers such as Wachira-Wa-Moto from Maringo Estate, extortionist Jack-Don-Silver and the fabled Ramah, from Eastleigh and who wasparticularly notorious for snatching gold chains from tourists in the CBD where he was ultimately gunned down by the squad that had been inspired by the infamous police reservist Patrick Shaw. Shimoli arrives on the scene much later with his entrance coinciding with the proliferation of handguns moslly from a chaotic Somalia where there was no government.

Please do not give money to rent those houses, you get them through application to the ministry of housing and open to civil servants.
