    My sister and I had very similar situations in Cancun. We didn't know until after the fact 15 minutes outside in the sun there is equal to 3 hrs. We were out for 3 hours! Also 2nd degree burns on day 1! There is also a flag guideline again we didn't know that & wondered why the lifeguard kept blowing his whistle & waving his hands. Later, we saw the black flag (as we came out of the ocean)= rough water aka undertow happening. Bad for a good swimmer let alone a weak one like myself. We were blessed with no problems. We did learn valuable lessons for future vacations & hopefully save a few people the same experiences. Thank you for sharing your tips.

    We've been to Maui several times and LOVED it every time! If you decide to stay at an Air B n B next time, you can rent a car and not worry about paying to park. The craziest thing that ever happened to us was back in March of 2010 there was a big earthquake in Japan, so all the tsunami alarms started going off in Maui. We were at a beachside condo and had to evacuate up the mountain to the West Maui Airport just in case a huge wave came in. It was exciting and very scary at the same time. Come to find out, the "tsunami" wave that did come in was only about 3 feet tall, nothing like they were expecting - which of course was good news.

    I went to Honolulu with the high school band in 2002. It was sooooo amazing and didn’t want to come home. Like you said, it’s very expensive then but now it’s worse. Housing is so expensive for the people that were born and raised there. They really depend on tourism so Covid really messed them up. I loved eating breakfast there, fresh fruit with other yummies, open air area, birds visiting you( some people were not so happy) but I loved it. Hearing the waves, cool breezes, and flowers everywhere.

  • @HaggisIsGross

    Aloha Cathy! I so enjoyed this video. I would recommend for actual Maui weather and beach information that you use Glenn’s Weather Narrative; he’s a Maui resident and professional weather service employee and has the most realistic information. Thank you for promoting reef safe sunscreen and the use of SPF clothing like the rash guard jackets for snorkeling, and the anti harassment laws regarding our sea turtles. On your next trip to Hawaii, consider coming during whale season (November through March) to see the glorious humpback whales! Pacific Whale Foundation has several boats and tours, and they drop a microphone in the water so you can actually hear the whales singing. Please also consider, no matter which island you choose, to NOT stay at airb&bs as they are seriously negatively impacting housing for the residents. Condos are fine, and are a more affordable option than hotels plus they have kitchens so you don’t have to eat every meal out. Aloha!

    I have been to Hawaii twice, once on my honeymoon and last year with the family. On my honeymoon we went one week to oahu and one week to maui. Last year we just went to oahu. I found maui shut down too early at 9:00. And it was too quiet . Both times we flew toronto to Vancouver with a 2 hour stop over. 5 hours to Vancouver and 6 to Hawaii. You will probably like waikiki beach as there is a stone wall stopping the waves so you will not be pulled in the ocean. We stayed at the Alohalani hotel both times. 30 years ago it was called the Pacific beach hotel. The hotel i stayed at in maui was the royal lahaina hotel, its still there. I do remember the waves being bigger in maui.

      Hi Susan, is the Alohalani hotel on the beach or is it a few blocks back? We were thinking of the Sheraton on Waikiki Beach. I know that there use to be a direct flight Toronto to Honolulu but I haven't been able to find it, so maybe it was scratched during Covid.

    • @susannus983
      @susannus983 Před rokem

      @@StyleWithCathyOver50 the Alohalani is in front of the beach not on the beach, you just have to cross the street. The Sheridan looks nice, on the beach and their infinity pool is right by the water. The Alohalani has an infinity pool but it is on the fourth floor. The ocean wall is not close to the Sheridan,you can walk, it's not far. You can buy a foatly and just float in the walled area. I guess they had direct flights at some time but we never found them.
