    This one was a bit of a surprise. I got one of the new 40mm Seiko 5s out of curiosity. Yet it wound up renewing my faith in Seiko. That they still have what it takes to create a great affordable everyday watch. So this is definitely one to check out, as it may be the best affordable sport watch out there right now.
    The idea behind it is a little strange, as it's a smaller version of the SKX or the new 5KXs. All done up with a dressy facelift. Which is why some are starting to call it the Dress-KX. Although no matter how odd that may sound, this one is pretty good. Reference SRPE61 / SRPE61k1 / SRPE61j1 .

    I used to be a scuba instructor. I'm getting one of these. Divers dive with dive computers. They are ugly and when you get out you soak it in fresh water and put it away.
    I wouldn't trust my life to a watch. Nobody goes down 100 just on air. You get nitrogen narcocis around 60 and you are risking O2 tox further down.
    If it's fine for swimming, it's fine.
    I love this thing because it reflects that I used to dive but life moves on and this is a practical, beautiful watch.

    Wonderful review, mesmerizing voiceover and awesome photography as always. On that crown issue: I don't need it signed because I'm already sure it's a Seiko by looking at the dial. I also don't need it screw down because I can easily wind and adjust it that way and there is no point of failure or wear like a thread. I like it exactly as it is - just like the rest of the watch - instant classic! I also don't understand how people consider this a downgraded SKX since it has nothing in common with it except the basic case shape and the dial layout. To me it is a far better everyday watch in every regard.

    @a.delome8023 Před 2 lety +1

    Recently picked up one of these on a local second hand web board not knowing much more about it other than it being a late model seiko for a ridiculous steal. With that said, I searched it out online and came across your video review. The previous owner said it was a srpe51 and you mention yours being an srpe61. This one came on a 2 piece leather strap, a seiko branded oyster style bracelet, and a throw-in nylon nato. Seems like the only difference between a 51 and a 61 is the watch's band if I'm not mistaken. The specs you mention are identical to this one and like you also mentioned, the accuracy was atrocious at a -26 seconds and a beat error of 3.3 before I was able to 'trial and error' regulate it to an acceptable 0.2 beat error @ + 4 seconds with a phone app. It seems to have settled in at between +3 to +6 seconds against my phone's clock wearing it over the past couple weeks so I'm satisfied with it now. The crystal's clean and a thorough cleaning of its backside around the gasket made it look presentable. The seller asked $75 mentioning how it wasn't very accurate and we settled on 60 bucks. I installed the bracelet and 2 new spring bars. Not sure if I'm going to keep it or flip it but as entry level seikos go, it's not too bad now.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  Před 2 lety

      I think the other difference between the 51 and 61 is the bezel. If I'm remembering right the 51 has a polished bezel, while the 61 is brushed. But overall minor differences.
      $60 is a fantastic price for it! Eventually, I put this one on a strap code jubilee.

      @@RelativeTime Good info Shane and thanks very much for the reply. Your insight confirms that the one I bought is the 51 as it does indeed have the polished bezel and did come with the Seiko branded bracelet even though the leather 2 piece I mentioned is what came installed. I doubt I'll invest in another bracelet as this one suits the purpose fine and I'm looking to satisfy other endeavors at the moment so will hold off on upgrading it. I wasn't on the hunt for this one to begin with and only bought it for the price and the challenge of regulating it myself, so both urges were satisfied. It's a nice 'everyday' for the time being though. Thanks again for your insight, good luck to you, and take care.

    • @dparis2172
      @dparis2172 Před 4 lety

      Of course the sapphire will be more scratch resistant, but are you talking about a domed piece of sapphire? Otherwise, I wouldn't expect it to "pop" more than what already comes with the watch. Hardlex gets a bad rap, but I appreciate its clarity over sapphire. Sapphire is usually overkill on most affordable watches, but that's just my opinion.

As a few weeks have passed I’ve come to the realization the samurai is large and that this srpe will be perfect. I’m going to try to stop in tomorrow and pick up the one I tried on. I’d like to pick up my first decent leather strap for it though since it definitely looks great on leather. Maybe also a sail cloth strap with rubber on the inside for beach/pool wear. A silicone nato might be a possibility as well. I like how you show it on so many different straps in both videos. It looks great on everything.

    What many of us don't realize is that Seiko intentionally not improving their bracelets actually allows 3rd party bracelets manufacturers and the modding community to grow. They do this to support small businesses. This is common in a lot of Japanese companies, particularly in the automotive industry. Toyota and Honda engines for example, are detuned significantly and you have HKS, Mugen, TRD, Tomei making performance and tuning parts for those cars. Japanese companies support each other...

    Seiko has a real winner here. If the price dips below $200, as most Seiko 5 do, it's going to be one helluva deal. If I didn't already own a sarb033, I'd likely buy this particular model.
    I have no idea why someone would want a screw-down crown on this watch. Beside it being another potential point of failure, it is also an unnecessary inconvenience every time you want to wind the watch, and/or set the time and date.

    I have the blue dial one with bracelet and love it. Very flexible everyday watch. It can wear sporty or more dressy depending on the strap. Actually I think the bracelet and nato strap versions cost the same--$275 MSRP--and it's the two-tone watches that cost an extra $50. So, I think the bracelet version is a better value. I got it for around $230 from a dealer (15%) which i think is a terrific price. It's similar in design and concept to the Black Bay 36 (but naturally larger).

    The first of the new series to make me look up and pay attention. Up until now I've been quite happy just to ignore them. Dropping the bezel is a great move as it probably saves cost for them. For us, it gives us something new that puts out vibes of Explorer or Black Bay for 36. Nice review.
    That dial is really nice, a great alternative to black without straying to far.
    It’s a nice enough watch. However, with Seiko, certain boxes that would be checked with microbrands are not checked here. No sapphire, unsigned crown. Since it not a diver, 100m wr and a pullout crown are ok. With those large crown guards this crown is very well protected.
    Personally, I’m really not into these newer Seiko 5s, Im not a fan of what they did. Just my opinion, I would go for a Turtle and spend a little more, I like the ET Bezel.
    I have heard this series being called the “Solid Boy”, I guess in reference to it’s fixed Bezel.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  Před 4 lety +1

      A few people have mentioned the "Solid Boy", which is evidently what they are calling them in Japan. Hard to go wrong with a turtle.
      The one thing I'm really glad they did with this one was reduce the thickness. Which gives it a better feel.
      I think that was one of my bigger issues with the 42mm 5kx. It's about the same as the SKX, yet it's not a real diver. So not much point.

      Have you had hardlex watches and sapphire watches side-by-side to compare? I'm curious because, a.) I've had a couple of hardlex watches and have had no scratching (but I'm probably not as hard on my watches as others) and b.) I think I have noticed an advantage of hardlex over sapphire in clarity. I might be imagining that, but hardlex disappears more easily over the dial while sapphire produces more "haze" at certain angles and lighting. Sapphire also seems to be a smudge magnet and takes a little more effort to wipe clean than does hardlex.
