I took a class from Tommy many years ago. He is genuine as they get. Very nice guy. His skills are far and beyond anyone on this planet.
Agree..I've met Tommy several times as he and brother lived here in Melbourne Australia where I'm from..They played pub gigs and their playing was as good then as now..Phil I miss as he had a hilarious sense of humour..
Agree 100%. He has to be an alien. Humans just can't play like that! An incredibly humble guy who taught himself to play Chet's Windy and Warm when he was six. In Cm! No capo! A truly great ambassador for Australia.
♫Saturday........Saturday♫ that little piece was from Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting from Elton's Yellow Brick Road album
He's a finger style virtuoso 🙂💖
Facts
Tommy plays the bass line with his thumbs and the lead and Rhythm with the rest as when he learnt nobody told him there was three guitarists. his brother Phil was also and phenomenal axe player there are a few videos of the together
Tommy makes the impossible look simple. His changes are so clean and precise. You never hear him sliding into anything unless he's doing it on purpose. I've met him several times as well. He is genuinely supportive and interested in everyone he meets, whether you're a great musician or just someone learning and rough around the edges. A great master who is an even greater person.
🙌👏🙌‼️ so glad to see you react to this one. I have seen him twice live here in Northern California. He tours the US fundraising for PBS. as a 2 hour one man show, he is just so entertaining and incredible. You can't believe it is over so soon. I highly recommend a performance called "Initiation" which is his interpretation of the Aboriginal rites of passage for boys becoming men. He makes sounds on that guitar I am pretty sure even you haven't heard before. You can just feel yourself in the outback with all the wildlife sounds etc. you won't be disappointed.✌️💯
I'll take a look
I can attest to that. As an Aussie we grew up with Tommy being a household name in Australia. I saw him in Adelaide when he debuted Initiation. It was just otherworldly! He's such a humble guy too.
Just wonderful!!❤
Tommy is amazing. As a guitarist, one thing that amazes me is how can play expertly with a flat pick, thumb pick, or no pick. Also, he can play while sitting down or standing up moving around.
Tommy loves throwing in different interval changes that link chords and create unusual arpeggios. He is a true musical genius.
That he is!
Tommy is a legend! His brother Phil (RIP) was also a master guitarist. Search around for videos of them playing together… phenomenal stuff!
Side note: you have to add in some Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler. So much to sink into (6 studio albums, a couple live, then Mark has 9 solo albums post-DS, plus 9 movie soundtracks, including “Princess Bride”)
👍🏾
Yes brothersTommy and Phil playing together was magic. I grew up here in Australia often watching them often many years ago on local TV. A brotherly magic watching them playing together. They’ve played guitar and siblings were young children.
Tommy didn't even get top billing, they played as 'Phil and Tommy Emmanuel'
You would enjoy his boogie jam that he does which is more blues like. I think anything he has done is incredible. He can play it all from folk, rock and roll, blues, jazz, ballads, you name it. If you really want to see three acoustic guitars played flawlessly, check out the trio he used to have with Frank Vignola and Vinnie Raniola. They play gypsy jazz from the guitar master Django Reinhardt and other jazz standards as well as a few classical and rock numbers.
I'll check it out
Tommy is first of all a master of technique on the guitar as you see it here. However, he also makes the guitar into a percussion instrument. He uses every part of the guitar. He knows how to entertain the crowd and make you feel like you’re in your living room enjoying his presentations. But even better than all of this he’s one helluva nice guy. Go see him in concert if you want to get your money’s worth!
As an Australian I've seen him play live many times , he doesn't only play acustic guitar , look at his electric guitar ability ✌️♥️🇦🇺
Man, to see the happiness on your face as you're watching this maestro play - priceless. That's the fantastic thing about music - it's power to spread joy. Keep up the great videos dude, love it!
Tommy was one of the late great Chet Atkins protògès and one of only five guitarists honored with a “Certified Guitar Player” or C.G.P. award by the guitar legend.
One of the things that always amazes me about tommy is the way he makes it look so effortless, he makes this look like it's so easy for him.
I normally don't leave a lot of comments but I'm trying to promote people checking out a Josh Cohen and a John Butler they are amazing performances as well thank you for taking the time to send this reaction out pieces
Saw him LIVE in Alexandria, VA, at the Birchmere Theater, was an amazing show!
I don't know if he's still performing, but he's used to perform at a restaurant in Sydney - Oz - I used to work at in the 90's. He's great to see live if you get the chance!
Been playing for 7 years started at 51 years old l am in ahhhh of his skill level guitar boogie is also a great listen and watch peace out Brother
the rest of the world always likes to debate who the best guitarist is.
in Australia we don't debate that. it'd be kinda silly, because someone always says "what about Tommy?" and the debate falls apart immediately.
he's played for HOURS EVERY DAY OF HIS LIFE since around age 7. he's in his 70s.
he IS the best, mileage never lies. and NO ONE has his mileage on the guitar.
Another Australian guitarist I suggest you listen to is blues player Dave Hole. He is the first non American signed to Alligator Records and rated highly for his slide work.
I'll check him out
Great pic glad you reviewed this one
🤘🏾🤘🏾
Was learning to play this and absolutely shredded my fingers this is the pennical of guitars songs to master
Sounds like the riff from Saturday Nights All Right For Fighting.
It is.
Half of it, anyway
This dude is on another level.
Facts
I hope you watch him play some blues. Because, well, DAMN.
Legend 👏
Check out the Duo Tommy Emmanuel and Billy strings playing together on stage live, it will blow your hair back.
Mr. Emmanuel is something of his own. I can only take my hat off and bow. No one will ever copy him.
Similar here is Mr. Stochelo, in the Rosenberg trio. Yes, they play Django Reinhart, sometimes. And they pull it off - with bonus.
Get on your knees, boy. I am already there, praying to the guitar gods. Join me?
You have never seen his older brother have you.
thats an early 70's song he injects by Elton John called "Saturday Nights alright for fighting"
TE is likely the best player to pick up a guitar. To stand up on stage alone with an accoustic guitar and carry an evening is incredible.
I am playing my guitars for like 22 or 23 years now ... i am not that bad, but ... everytime I see Tommy playing I feel like "ah, that is possible on a guitar? good to know! give me 50 years more of practice to get close to it!" ... :-/ He is really the GOAT! Saw him several times live! Met him in person, of course - very (!) nice guy!!! :-)
Tommy’s such a nice guy. Used to go and see him years ago in small venues in South Wales. I always used to request Those Who Wait, a beautiful song he composed himself. We also had a pint and a chat in Dublin once. A true gent.
I can't think of a better guitarist and I have tried.
Tommy breaks into Walk Don't Run and then into Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting.
Saturday nights alright for fighting...He is also hitting on "Walk, Don't Run" just before going int that...
Ventures homage at 4:00 😊
Love our Aussie legends ❤️🇦🇺👍🏼
Unreal
Woowee, Tommy was shredding.
I'm down for more of Tommy's video's, this was my first time hearing him and he killed it.
If you're interested in checking out other artist's well versed with acoustic I'd recommend
Estas Tonne - The Song of the Golden Dragon.
I'll check him out n glad I put u onto tommy
You introduce me to so much cool music. Thank you🤟❤😎
Glad I can help
Just spent time with him at his camp in Nashville and it was the best week of my life. He is the most genuine, kind, humble person on the planet while at the same time being the most insanely talented. I asked if I could play something for him before lunch started on our final day there because I wanted to show him that I'd worked something out that I had struggled with during my first camp with him in Hawaii. He really took time with me and listened super intentionally. Then after complimenting my playing he took me through the song again and mentioned a few ways I could improve it even more. He didn't need to do any of that but he did it and with a smile on his face and genuine passion for teaching. Please do more reactions of him. What you've seen seems to be just barely scratching the surface of what I know he is capable of.
Also I have videos with him on my channel including the one of what I just mentioned which is kinda blowing up for some reason. I don't post to get views or subscibers but for some reason the algorithm pick it up lol.
Tommy seems like a cool dude, thats awesome he took time to give some advice to you!
@@Devon_Rismay he is. There are many videos all over the internet of him doing the same for countless others of all ages. Not to mention the crazy number of tutorials he's recorded over the years. Especially since the pandemic started. He loves to teach about as much as he loves to perform.
GLORIA
Wow!
Finally!!
Always enjoy watching Tommy react videos. Would love to see more .. for something completely different you should definitely check out his "Initiation", it's mind blowing. Also, "9 Pound Hammer" is a fun one too. Anyway, liked and subscribed cause I really enjoyed your take. Cheers.
I appreciate that! Welcome
As far as finger pickers in no order Chet, Tommy, Jerry Reed, Doc and take your pick after that. But those 4 are the best I ever heard at that style. Jerry was so underrated in my opinion.
Hey nice to see you, man. Hope your music journey is going well. This was great, thanks! Listen to Mason Williams' original release. A huge hit from my Jr high days. Ugh......
I'll look into it 🤘🏾
Spot on. I heard it right away, too. It’s Elton John…” Saturday Night’s All Right for Fighting.” The rhythm is identical, as well. Amazing how just two notes or two cords can bring you right to a song. I picked it up with the first two cords and didn’t need the other two to put it together! How funny how these things resonate with you. It just makes the song sound weird to me, now! It stands out like a sore thumb… LMAO
Curious if Elton John has ever been called out on it for possibly swiping it. The dude has a massive ego! Need to take a nap after listening to the song! Can’t wait to go and try and monkey with it!
You are the real hero. Recognized it instantly but couldn’t put my finger on what it was. Probably a good year I have been trying to figure it out.
The fun part as a guitarist in that "Saturday " part is his 👍.
Watch it again and pay attention to how his left thumb never moves. Then go try and duplicate it. His dexterity is amazing. Love Tommy's music and style.
You might also want to check out Mike Dawes.
There’s a beautiful duet of Mike Dawes and Tommy playing “Fields of Gold”. CZcams title is “Two Of The World’s BEST Acoustic Players In One Room! | Guitar Village”. I also recommend “The Tommy Emmanuel Interview” on Rick Beato’s YT channel for any students of the guitar. He passes on some very good technical tips.
Gloria
So, those videos you mentioned where Tommy is playing live with Bonamassa and others, you will notice the comments.
People that truly know Tommy Emmanuel and his playing abilities, will comment how Tommy is just taking it easy and being respectful.
If he wanted to he could easily take the stage light away from them.
And then you will see all of the comments that don't truly know how good Tommy Emmanuel is.
They think it is a bunch of Bologna and he is alright but not as good as bonamassa or others.
When you see videos like this you realize that yes indeed, he is taking it easy and being modest when he's sharing the stage.
One of my faves😎👍🎶I’m still workin on those licks!!
Yay. First time subscriber and first comment! Great reaction!
Thank you! Welcome!
Jumpin Jeosephat. The guy is outragious. Ya see to what extents guitar playing can come to. But what a skite!!
that song you wondered about is love the one your with by crosby stills and nash.
Tommys been playing for 65years
Prodigy indeed
Yeah, Tommy is incredible, I don't even have words to fully express his performance of Classical Gas. Here's one guitarist you might not have heard of that's a very interesting and skilled guitarist, just search "irish jig Shaun harper" it will be the first one that comes up.
Shaun is a beast!
@@Devon_Rismay He is! yet I've never seen a reaction video to him.
Australian treasure,him and his brother
Play that music white boy, you show them who is master, lol Even better watching Tommy live, now that's an experience.
I think I heard at least 4 or 5 guitar instrumental surfing songs from the early 1960's in there, (and maybe some Who,) all mixed together, all tastefully blended in with Classical Gas. Tommy can toss broken glass into the air and have it fall back down as a mosaic.
This is a bloke having some fun. It's as simple as that.
Tommy 🤘🔥🤠🇭🇲
That left thumb is an anchor
You enjoyed that 👍
Nice! Check out Journey and Initiation. Initiation will blow you're mind and I guarantee you have never heard anything like it before.
Elton John, Saturday night. I heard it too
I just happened across your Billy Strings video, and then watched this one. It looks as if your channel is blues focused, so I will be watching more. If you like Billy and Tommy, check out a lady named Molly Tuttle. She has won the blugrass musicians assn. Guitar Player of the Year, twice, and is the only woman ever nominated. Her picking work is amazing. Since I didn't see them in your video list, I also recommend checking out the Lovell sisters of Larkin Poe. Especially Megan Lovell's slide playing. They are badasses.
My guitar saw this vid and decided to put me on ebay
Look up the CZcams video on Tommy and his brother the late Phil Emmanuel.
Try and listen to Tommy play.. THE TALL FIDDLER.. Just when you think he's at top speed ,he turns it up one more notch..If you want to see him play a slower song that will blow your mind.. Listen him play . SOME WHERE OVER THE RAINBOW.. Beautiful...
👍🏾
Yes look him up with hisbroPhil. Rip.
Hilarious, "I think he's playing a C B and D chord and then a B flat" 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Watch TE play "initiation".
You'll see and hear things you never thought possible.
❤❤❤❤❤
❤
10 years at woodstock, Alvin Lee- one of the fastest players ever
Another Tommy reaction where the host has no f’ing idea
I have played for fifty years and what I picked up was I am shit lol
He's every bit as good on electric too.
Facts
That song sounds like. Saturday nights all right for fighting. Elton John.
@ 4:30 it's Saturday night's alright.
i know this is a year late , but , is that interlude Elton Johns's "saturday's alright for fighting"?
If you ever get the chance to see him live: GO! Take the time, make the effort, spend the coin, it's worth it. He put on the most entertaining one man show I've ever seen. He tells stories, and plays your face off for hours. You said he might have a few things to teach you. If you go, and learn nothing about guitar, he will teach you about how to put on a show and entertain a crowd.
Abso freaking lutely! As insane as he is in youtube videos, seeing him live is a surreal experience.
Guitar is played in hours Tommy has over 50,000 wow I've got 5000 practice practice practice
This is so great, but you might appreciate it even more if you checked out the original version by Mason Williams to see how Tommy reimagines it (Plus adds the Moody Blues to the mix!)
He just had a concert last week 30 min from where I live, I was planning on going but “stuff” happened and I forgot about it till two days after 😢😢. I was sooo bummed. That was a WHO song, I think
Thats what it was!! And that sucks
Elton John Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting ♫ Saturday....Saturday♫
RIP Tommy, you will never be forgotten your talent and gentle honest persona are legendary.
You're thinking of his brother Phil, who passed in 2018; Tommy's still alive and touring.
Check out Tommy’s purple haze. Love your channel
Wasn't that Elton John and Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting?
As a hair/heavy metal guitarist I luv anything guitar, but Tommy is a whole different breed. First time seeing one of your reactions, truly enjoyed. But if you truly want to experience Tommy's true mastery check out Initiation Live, react or not up to you but experience it. czcams.com/video/d2g_IIwBZnY/video.html
"Was that a C"... jeez, this bloke goes through the whole alphabet.... *lol*
Notice how he easily switches from classical to contemporary with his left thumb? Did you know that he doesn't read music? I think this accounts for his distinctive style.
Leo Kottke is a pretty good guitar player as well.
find this youtube video - Tommy Emmanuel - Medley Improvisation (RARE)
you should check out fuel :)
Alip ba ta from Indonesian 👌
You have to play a video with Tommy and Jack Pearson. Any video will do. I’ll bet you’re going to watch them all.
I'll check it out
You need to watch Monte Montgomery! When Will I. You gotta hear Monte!
Great player, but not yet on Tommy's level.
Please react too Alip_Ba_Ta bro.... He is amazing gitaris... I'll waiting dude...
Elton John Saturday I believe it was.
Demon fingers.
The song you are looking foe is Elton John’s Saturday Night.
