Actually, the x's on people's faces was a part of the manga as well! Completely agreed that it was an effective tool to depict social anxiety and I always personally loved that detail.
I agree, especially as someone who suffers from a lot of social anxiety. I thought it was a really unique way to express his anxiety and it worked really well!
I loved the X’s. It made me feel the character’s loneliness and felt like an outcast watching it.

The scene where she says sorry is gut wrenching

In the manga it showed there the detailed process of each character'[s character development. I was slightly disappointed that it didn't showed much in the moview but I understand because you have a limited time to fit all the story in a 2hr movie

This movie actually made me cry. It was the first time in a long time I was crying about something and I knew what it was, actually the 'we can change if we try our best' mentality is something that made me realize I shouldn't be entitled to happiness. Happiness is a goal, something *worth* working and prelonging for.
This movie taught me to be grateful to be alive

I watched the first 57 seconds of this video and was like "Wow this looks ok, Imma watch it" and I literally paused the video and immediately went to watch the movie. After I watched it, I was like "Fuck this is a really good movie, how did I find this, oh wait." I just came back from watching the movie.
The face X's mostly appear when Shou is experiencing social anxiety and is unable to look people in the eyes. They did a great job expressing that when Kawai walks up to Shou at his desk and he deliberately avoids looking up at her.

The movie and manga are both great in their own rights. Lets be realistic, the movie adaptation couldn't have included all of the character building that the manga does because they dont want to make a 3 or 4 hour movie. Its not ideal and so they had to cut corners, and instead they just put the attention on Ishida and Nishimiya. Its a different direction and it works well enough. I think to enjoy both the manga and the movie you have to put aside the expectation that a 62 chapter manga can be translated well onto film.
There are also many aspects of the film that greatly triumph over the manga. The movie has the added ability of music to scenes to elevate them above what the manga could provide. The movie has colour. I cant be fucked to think of anymore, but you get the idea.
Elbentojr bois this is why I still argue the film is better than the manga. Not saying the manga isn't good, anyone who liked the movie should read it. But the experience of the movie is absolutely breathtaking

tbh they should've made this a seasonal anime so they can adapt ALL of the manga. Its not too late tho, i would still love it any way
Elbentojr bois Basically huge props to the director. She did amazing. The best way I can describe the relationship between the manga and movie (from what you said since I haven’t read the manga) is like how you cook your eggs. Either or any of the ways could be good but one will always leave out and add some things the others didn’t.
I prefer considering both as different stories just using the same elements and characters

At first I judged a book by its cover and I thought it was a cliché bully redeems himslef and then finds love then happy ever after. Yet watching it, I was completely wrong and I feel ashamed of false judging such a masterpiece. It deals with stuff I never thought was in the movie.

3racha_ Chanty I cried 3 separate times the first time I watched. None of them were straight up bawling, just tears in my eyes. After that, I never teared up. I only got major goosebumps. I say you should always use headphones of some sort, and have the volume loud, and to also watch it at night. Put yourself in the protagonist’s shoes. I also bought the manga set, and it was very good. It’s pretty different from the movie. Another anime you should definitely watch is Your Lie in April if you haven’t yet.

This movie took me by surprise! So many gut-wrenching twists and turns, and like you mentioned: astounding cinematography! I wish more people will discover it in the near future. And I can't wait to see Naoko Yamada's next film!
SolRS18 or next anime series? Also the writer for this film is Reiko Yoshida, who written a lot of great anime such as K-ON and Tamako Market. Can't wait what she writes next.
she works for kyoto animation, that company has produced anime that are considered to be the best of the best such as CLANNAD/ -AFTER STORY-, Lucky Star, Nichijou, Dragon maid, this film, Sound Euphonium, Free!, K-ON, HARUHI, and many others. i personally hold them as my personal favorite anime company. Many of these Naoko yamada has worked on, most notably Clannad and this film, both considered to be perfect and clannad after story being up at #2 on myanimelist's Top rated anime for awhile.

Chloe Ricks same lol, I was so surprised at its 93% rating compared to infinity wars 83%, I had to see why it was rated higher. The story was spectacular, animation and cinematography were PERFECT and character development was amazing as well.
It was recommended to me on youtube and i had nothing to do for the next two hours. I have no regret!!

I saw this movie before I got into Anime. At first I was like “LOL, why is everyone so worked up about Japanese cartoons?” I did eventually watch the movie though, and boy, that really hit me. It made me have a whole new respect for anime.
Great video! I think a lot of people don't realize that the movie and manga go for similar but different messages. While the manga gives focus to all the characters, the movie goes into great detail on the mentality of just the two leads. I can understand why it might be frustrating for that so much was left out, but in the context of just Shouko and Shouyo on their journey of self forgiveness and acceptance, it is absolutely masterful.

What happened
Silent voice have secured a very special place inside my heart.
I think one of my favorite things about the movie (and manga, but I havent read it) is how they tackle difficult subjects like social anxiety, suicide, and depression or self hatred. They dont make it seem like it's just all something that goes away in a day, like a lot of Hollywood films do. They use subtle ways to show the characters mentality, and don't over exaggerate. Sorry if this explanation sounded bad, but I really did enjoy the film and their approaches
This is w/o a doubt my favourite non action anime movie. Only thing i was kinda pissed about was that shouyo and shoka didnt kiss on the bridge

Besides the things you mentioned, one of my favourite aspects of the film are the characters and their psychology. Each character is so... _real._ They are like actual people you might know irl. And you could literally make a psycho-analyzing video on each of them, there is that much to be said about everyone. They are so well-developped that you can actually understand them. There might be characters that you'll hate at first glance, but if you think about them as people, about their personalities, their motives, it all makes sense. They are very three-dimensional and psychologically really interesting. It's actually an interesting study of the human nature...

This movie surprised me in pretty much every way possible. I was already in love with Yamada's work, K-On! and Tamako Market/Love Story being some of my favorite anime for years, but I was skeptical of this one. I read the manga years ago and kind of forgot about it. I wasn't really that interested in it. I've also seen a TON of anime. I'm nearing 600 now on MAL. I just don't get as excited about anime as I used to.
However, Koe no Katachi reignited so many feelings, touched me in so many ways, and made me reconsider so many of my thinking patterns because of how hard I related to Ishida. I thought nothing could topple K-On! as my favorite anime, but Koe did it.
Can't wait for her Euphonium movie. I bet it will blow me away as well.

"The characters are unique but also tropish/stereotypical" you mean like a real person? We all fall into one stereotype or another thats why stereotypes exist because they are quick and easy descriptions of real people without getting too deep into what makes them unique, but real live humans are unique and just like everyone else, both at the same time.
This is my second favorite anime, and truly a work of art that is almost tied with my favorite film of all time, Your Name. If you haven't watched Your Name, I suggest you do, as the cinematography is incredible, Makoto Shinkai is a master of depicting light and weather, and the story portrays the theme of our bond to life and each other in a unique way. Both A Silent Voice and Your Name have inspired me in ways that no other anime or film in general has.
I watched A Silent Voice just after watching Your Name. People tend to argue about which is better but in my opinion both of them are beautiful in their own unique way. Makoto Shinkai's works are always mesmerizing not only in scenery and animation, but in story as well. You should watch The Garden of Words which is also one of Shinkai's works. Sadly, the bittersweet part about these masterpieces are the empty feelings that linger just after finishing it :/.

Sincerely, can you explain to help me understand why everyone feels sad or cries in the ending? I (think I) understand the message of the movie, but I couldn't find it relatable enough to feel strong enough emotions. The only time I teared a but was the beginning's bullying scenes and Shoto's near-suicide.
Barely found this channel, how have I been missing out this much, and barely 10k subs. Honestly deserve way more, this is quality content and I love it.
The manga is one of my absolute favorites and when I heard that there was a movie coming out I checked everyday after the release of it for it subbed anywhere. Needless to say it took a lot longer than expected but the movie did not at all disappoint me and even made me fall in love with the series even more. The manga art is unique and eye catching but the way they translated it into an animation was breathtaking.
Still waiting for a release date in my country.

I watched this movie for the first time today and its probably in my top 3 movies of all time.
Oooh 15K today! Way to go you! Also I waited to watch this video until watching A Silent Voice, at 2 am for some reason, but I'm glad I did & I love it! The cinematography throughout is so amazing.
I also cried throughout at least half of it if not a third of the full 2 hour film.

Ever since i watched this movie i have started to consume more stuff from KyotoAnimation. And i really enjoy their works. Looks always good. Characters are very often relatable/feel realistic. And yeah koe no katachi ia the best movie i have watched this year.

I saw this movie the day after asking my mother my a therapist and it hit me insanely hard. My first time crying was at only half an hour in, and I managed to cry at least 5 times over the course of the movie. I could relate to Ishida in ways I didn't even know and now I have a connection with this movie. This movie hurt in all the right ways and I hope to keep it with me for a long time.
When you mentioned cinematography I instantly thought of a whisker away. It’s an amazing movie and it’s absolutely beautiful.

A silent voice is one of my favorite movies and mangas, its such a good story and it was written so well. it also just teaches such an important lesson and deals with so many hard topics, its just so good.

Shellnut꿈 im with you. Got too artsy fartsy for me at the end. The first half was so good because of the realism and human emotions not poeticism.
I watched this before reading the manga and it blew my mind. To this day, it's one of the few movies that can make me cry. The art and direction is absolutely amazing and I've never seen anything like it.
Ko No Katachi hurt me in the hardest places. The movie cuts deep in my old wounds, and these characters are so awesome. Each character cuts me deep in own ways, and animation was so sweet. The love both Shoyko and Shoya make me feel that humanity has a chance to change

I saw this movie recently in theaters subbed and then loved it so much I watched it a few days later dubbed. I cried both times and have been raving about this movie to all my friends.

(Btw I can't remember their names for shit) I loved everything about this movie, months later I'm still in the giddy "it's the best :D" faze. (But then again, the only anime movie I had ever watched before was Paprika and that was awful, so it's not like the bar was very high.) But regardless, Koe no Karachi is absolutely fantastic except for 2 aspects.
1. During the scene where nishimia (I think that's how it's spelled) is about to jump off a balcony, HOW THE HELL DO YOU FUCK UP THAT BADLY. This guy trips, runs into a table and falls over, fumbles at the door. I could tolerate one fuck up but honestly this is just the classic trip-on-a-pebble-while-running-from-a-monster type shtick. Then he can't even pull her up. She must be a hefty what, 90 pounds? And with the adrenaline and everything? Maybe that's an exaggeration but I don't see someone actually falling off a railing (which could have been used as leverage).
2. The two don't even fucking touch each other. Is this part of Japanese culture, to like not be direct with feelings? Even after the coma ends, their first meeting consists of sitting on their knees and talking. Meanwhile my insides are screaming at the movie to pan the camera away and have them fuck already. Like enough is enough. I've seen chess played with more passion than what these two have for each other. Can they at least hug or something? Are they not finally even, even after he almost killed himself for her?
But yeah those being my only complaints I think, well, uh, awesome movie but it gets less good the farther it progresses. I mean I wasn't expecting the ending to be celebrating the dude's regaining his ability to associate with people like an average human. At least I think that was the ending. Whatever.

1. He actually only hits the chair and isn't shown to fumble with anything else really and the hitting of the chair is a very realistic mistake that raises the tension. Shoya isn't that strong of a dude, just look at his body. He's the tall, lanky, noodle-y type with very little muscle mass. On top of the fact that Shoko isn't a tiny person, she's probably at least 120-130 pounds just by being of a more average physique and height. The shot showing Shoya's hand on the railing is significant because it shows he was in such a desperate rush to grab her arm that he overextended his body. Once over half of his body was over the railing he no longer had sufficient leverage, then he had to grab Shoko with both of his hands because his grip strength is probably not any better than the average person's. Holding on to a person's arm while they are falling or pulling away from you is hard as skin doesn't give much traction and bones are smooth. Shoya and Shoko probably weigh about the same amount so because of one of Newton's laws (every action much have an equal and opposite reaction) Shoya used his weight and some acceleration to create enough force to bring shoko up but in response the force he generated carried him forward since he was light enough for it to overcome his inertia. All of this lead to the inevitable conclusion of him falling off. Ever wonder why people have to yell for others to come help pull someone up from a cliff or something? The reason we yell for help is because we instinctually know if we tried to pull them up ourselves we'd be the ones to fall off in their place.
2. Japanese culture is very "NO TOUCH". Also, while they like (potentially love) each other Shoko was the only one who had expressed it and Shoya didn't even understand her. That would make even a well adjusted person take a few steps back and be more hesitant about confessing not to mention someone like Shoko or Shoya who have been bullied/outcasts/depressed for most of their life.
Lastly, the thing with the X's has more to do with not looking people in the eye than anything. While watching the movie you'll notice that whenever someone loses the X over the face suddenly the camera focuses front and center on them when before they were just shoved into a corner like scenery or completely avoided in favor of the ground. This applies to the opposite too. When Ueno tries to get Shoya and Shimada to reconnect at the amusement park he feels betrayed and retreats into himself again so the next time we see Ueno's face the X is slapped back on and the camera quickly pans down. The ending of the movie has to do with how he never used to look at people or listen to people because really listening and looking people in the eye are two things that are very emotionally vulnerable. Shoya is so scared of what others say and think about him he doesn't even give them the chance to hurt him, he doesn't look at them and he doesn't listen to them. The very end when he starts to listen to what others say again has one line where a girl says something like "How can he still come to school?" and you see Shoya flinch when he hears it. It is a subtle message to both him and the audience that some people really do think and say these nasty things but you still have to open yourself because the majority of people don't. The ending flashes to all of the people who support him, even slightly, and he cries realizing that his life of solitude inside his own mind is finally over.

My favourite movie is A Silent Voice. The only problem is that NONE of my friends OR FAMILY have bothered to watch it. They think anime is ' weird Chinese stuff ' GOD IT'S ANNOYING!!

As much as i loved the movie (and i really did, especially on the 2nd and 3rd viewings) it's still a flawed adaptation of a better manga. Your name, however, is a more sound and cohesive movie that doesn't rely on the manga to develop its story completely. While i love both movies, your name is, in my opinion, better directed, has better cinematography and better defined motivations for all of its characters, though to be fair they have more time for less characters.
Manuel Sayous i understand how your name has better visuals, but your name's characters were almost nonexistent for me. Mitsuha and Taki have little characterization and their romance feels super forced and doesnt work.
Trash kun Agreed. Your Name also has the benefit of being an original adaptation, thus making it easier to plot out the movie. Your Name also only works if you forget all logic. Neither Taki or Mitsuha checked the date until it was too late. They both own phones so you would think every time they open them they would see the date; they also both go to school respectively, so they probably have had to write the date or notice it on the board. I love Your Name, but honestly, it is way too overhyped. The last scenes in the movie barely makes sense either, "Let's blow up the neighborhood and not question it too much cause Mitsuha believes the town's gonna be wiped out." Honestly, no normal high school student would risk that much for a friend's crazy prediction.

The movie stands on it's own, it not a flawed adaption in the slightest, it gives you what you need to know without any exterior information, if you want to know more behind some characters read the manga, but the movie gives you the basic jist and explanation.

For a manga reader the movie is dissapointing and for a newcomer it doesn't make sense. Character development and relationships are underdeveloped and skipped to certain points. This should have been a tv show or at least a few OVAs, the movie format wasn't enough
That's a huge generalization. I'm a manga reader and I was blown away by this movie. I recommended it to a friend of mine who has not read the manga or is an anime fan. He was able to understand everything in the film. If the newcomer has comprehension skills and can actually think then they will understand the movie. The movie does not treat you like a child by explaining everything like the manga.
Nope. Never read the manga so I came to this movie with nothing but an open mind. I was blown away. Never had trouble understanding it either. I know plenty of people who had similar experiences with the movie.
night1952, maybe lots of people seem to echo your sentiment because the manga is better... or maybe it isn't. Maybe they're equally good but just different. I wouldn't know till I actually go read it myself. I think it's unfair to judge a 2-hour movie on book/serialisation terms. To me, A Silent Voice is a near-flawless movie.

I personally think the movie is better and is a perfect adapatation. The storytelling is just better due to the subtlety which the manga lacked and it had much more focus than the manga.
The manga does however explore the characters more and is a more fleshed out story, but has zero subtlety, whilst lacking the focus the movie adaptation has. Each has it's pros and cons.
I'm a newcomer, never read the manga and I had no trouble understanding the movie at all.

a silent voice is probably my favourite movie right alongside grave of the fireflies, it was so beautifully told and the animation was fantastic. their story is so sad yet so beautiful with a sweet ending that doesn't just set things in stone for the characters but opens up new possibilities
