    That scene in the beginning with the students singing pisses me off, why you may ask? Well it is here that Kawai Miki pretends to start singing, causing Shouko to become confused and sing out of tune. It is later then that Kawai was the chance to swoop in and correct her while others are watching to make her seem like she is good. This is also evidence to her slightly narcissistic personality which is shown many times in the manga (she looks at herself in the mirror and says sumting i forgot).

      If that is what people consider ableism, I absolutely agree.
      It's just that at least among certain people the term "ableism" has, as so many other terms, become overused. Too many people consider any amount of criticism towards disabled people, or any time someone doesn't think about disabled people all the time as "ableist".
      For example, I was once called by an entire forum "ableist" because I argued that not every single Movie in a theater should have subtitles on the chance a deaf person might be in the audience. Have regular screening with subs? Yes, but not all the time.
      Now you might agree with this or not, but to call that "ableist" is ridicilious.

      @@dezzydream Oh. I also almost always use subtitles even in languages I speak fluently, even in my native language.
      But that doesn't matter. It doesn't matter what my preference or that of the people you know are. Most people find subtitles distracting. I don't since I grew up reading subs since I was a child due to Anime, but most people don't, and to those who don't, those who aren't used to them, subtitles can take away some of the experience.
      If you just slap subs on everything those who like subs are happy, but those who don't aren't. If, however, you provide screenings with and without subtitles, mixed, you could please both parties. I do think the screenings with subs should be less often due to people needing them being fewer, but I also think that right know, in most countries I was subtitled screenings are not yet often enough.

    Ive been watching anime a long time and I remember when dubs were so void of expression that subs were the default go to for any self respecting anime fan. Things have changed, dubs are now done professionally and i feel they are superior for native english speakers who have little or no experience speaking japanese. Verbal communication is incredibly complex and expression, enunciation, pacing, etc, all can radically change context. These things are just easier to pick up on in your native language, and now that they are so well done in preserving the artistic intent it's just the way to go unless you know or are learning japanese.

    • @jamesson1154
      @jamesson1154 Před 3 lety +20

      I agree with most of what you said except for early dubs being void of expression. Pokémon dub was amazing considering it debuted in the mid-late 90’s. I grew up watching that and to view that in sub would be weird.
      You also don’t take into account for scenes being lost in translation. I’ll give you an example. When Nishimiya confesses to Ishida, all he picks up on is “moon”. Not only would that be incredibly difficult to misinterpret that in English (moon and like/love sound nothing alike), your also missing out on some historical Japanese context. I heard from a Japanese person that in ancient times, they confessed their affection by saying “the moon is bright today” or something of that nature. A key example of how the dub can never be as intended 100%.
      Dub is great for people that aren’t exposed to other cultures. There’s a lot of mental effort that goes into deciphering scenes from foreign films the way it was intended, on the fly. It’s not a crime to be laid back, because most importantly, it’s for entertainment.
      Could you imagine people saying LoTR dubbed in Japanese is better? Blasphemous right?
      “One ring to rule them all” just wouldn’t hit me the same way in Japanese, if I understood Japanese.

      @@LuigiTheMetal64 No offence but I feel like this is your excuse for hating on dubs. Because although you are right about the subbed voice actor trying her best you don't know that the dub relates to the character so much. Just because she is also deaf doesn't mean she's like a real life version of Shouko. For example I could relate to the character in being bullied (which I wasn't) and maybe 'relate' to her situation but I'm not deaf. and if I was bullied it would be for a completely different reason meaning in different ways too. And you don't know if the voice actor of Shouko was bullied (the dub actor) so being deaf is the only thing she might be able to relate to. Another point; her voice actor is acting. Not just talking for the character. So she is showing emotions for Shouko. So no it is not contradictory to call her an actor.

    • @savaget2058
      @savaget2058 Před rokem +7

      It's exactly the same in the original Japanese language, she speaks a deaf version of it. The fact that you don't perceive Japanese as well as you do English is what makes the difference.
      The English VA's actually did a great job, but tons of dialogue is off screen without characters mouths actually moving to compensate for the significant difference in dialogue. To each their own, I prefer to watch a movie the way the director intended though. Subtitles are something you can easily train your mind to process while enjoying the visuals after a little bit of practice.

      @LuigiTheMetal64 Před 3 lety

      I just don't like how users in the comments are basically saying the English actor for Shouko is great because she is deaf too. They are implying that being relatable to the characters is acting, which is not. It makes the person just playing as herself, rather than pretending to be someone different from her. I do prefer the Japanese actor because she at least tries to make her voice be broken as a way to assume that is how deaf people talk. She could just talk normal or maybe stay in the same pitch most of the time since there are deaf people who can sound normal.

      To me he sounds more like a child in the dub than sub and you can tell how mocking his tone is when he was bullying her, while the sub is also really good but the dub shows how immature he sounds because that's what he was. Immature and he didn't understand anything she was saying (which is normal) but he never even tried to understand and was always quick to assume it was something stupid like she wanted to hold hands with him when she really wanted to be friends and I think the dubbed version made it sound better and more realistic.

Not when reading a sub and knowing what they’re saying. Multiple scenes in the sub I wouldn’t know besides characters getting angry or questioning her that she is speaking bad Japanese. I could never get to the point where I understood where the character was coming from hence my preference of the English dub where I know why she was bullied, why people cringed, and ultimately why she tried to commit suicide.

I even think one of the dub's VAs actually has an edge on one of the Japanese VAs, and I'm talking about Mrs. Nishimiya (Shouko's Mom). I found myself actually disliking how she was played in Japanese, for her performance in the English is much more threating and delivers the character better. The performance in the Japanese in contrast to that isn't bad, but I'm not scared of her. It's just the run of the mill anime mom VA.

    Yknow, I would have liked to see a second movie to see the rest of what happened with Shoya and Shoko, the first time I watched this movie it made me tear up. I watched it again to try to see more clear details about shoya and his life. I noticed that he was just trying to fix what he had destroyed in the past namely friendship. So I kind of realize why he was always “on edge” or whatever

    I personally like the subbed v. I usually like to go for the original to get a better understanding of how the characters are actually feeling since translating in the dubbed versions might change the expressions of the characters. The dubbed v. is not bad! I just prefer the original.

    this is why i love both subbed and dubbed anime. both the VAs can take the same scene and make it so amazing, plus you can get the different emotions from what they say. So something in subbed may sound so depressed but in the dubbed it can sound so emotion filled and regretful, but you can still feel the emotion and pain in both.

    Iv watched both subbed and dub and honestly while my default would probably be subs I will whole heartily admit that this is one of the best dubs in anime with it still conveying the emotions and tone of the movie and not much dialogue is changed and when it is it almost if ever changed the meaning behind their words

    I had this strange Chance of luck, when I was super young probably second grade or first grade, there was this girl who was deaf and talk like her from the beginning, I didn’t just think what was wrong with her, I came up with a conclusion all by myself, then ask the teachers to confirm my theory, my theory was “she had a different level of hearing and the ability to speak, so when she speaks it’s normal to her but when I hear it, it sounded quite odd to me.” Of course my little mind didn’t properly think how it said it in here, but in this term and not in a nutshell. This is how I thought of this deaf girl in a young age.

    In a film like this, to truly get a feel for Shoko, you have to hear it in your native language, because if you're not a native speaker of one language of the other, you won't get the same feel and understanding. If I was a Japanese native and my main language was Japanese, the English one wouldn't really work for me, but because I'm an english native, Shoko in Japan doesn't sound different from the other characters, so I don't actually get the same sense as what's going on.

    I prefer the dub, it sounds just so much more realistic and adorable; it's like you can understand what she's saying and it feels like there is more deaf emotions you can feel whenever she talks. (Not to mention the voice actor is actually deaf too)

    Honest opinion, it's way better dubbed. Maybe it's cause they had an actual deaf voice actress which goes a long way, though I think the other English voice actors did an amazing job as well.
