I’m really glad John came back to the Daily Show. We really need his perspective to get through this.

@@loud2909 Why are you bothering to watch him, then. I’m glad you are getting help, since I don’t think you would have made this suggestion if you weren’t seeing one yourself. But I don’t see anything in my comment that might suggest I need one. Why do you hate John Stewart so much? And why do you watch him?

When you're 19 you have all the feelings, and less practice surviving them.
This too, shall pass.
News to this 19 year old! I've been in survival mode and constant disassociation my whole life, and I'm still trying to feel 😂(P.s. Sorry about your situation though -I'm not American, but it still worries me)
@@rachelstanger6079 I think the OP might be an Aussie, as am I. I'm old. Life was hard for me at 19. Stints in psych wards. Actually "this too shall pass" is one of my favourite quotes. It can be hard to remember it though, when you are in the darkness, at rock bottom.

"Such is Life" got me through some things....
This is so true. It doesn't get any easier, but we have past hard times to look back at and remember how you survived them. 💖
I'm 47 and I honestly have to ask, will it? Reagan was awful, Clinton didn't manage to undo Reaganism, then Bush made it worse. Then Obama didn't undo any of it, then it got worse again under Trump. It's not "this too shall pass", it's "buckle up it's only been getting worse."
I’m 44 and here are my life events: Reaganomics led my family to pb&j and canned ravioli for many meals; 90s - my dad went to the gulf war, came back a different man, which led to divorce; I turned 21 and 9/11 happened, then more war, many friends shipped off. Graduated college, met my hubby, bought a house and then recession. Had babies during the best presidency, felt very optimistic and then trump happened. I feel like life is very cyclical. You have highs and lows and you try to make the best out of what you have. Keep hope alive.
I'm sorry to hear about your father. He came before me. 9/11 I was in Mrs. Lemon's history class and saw the second plane hit. Never imagined I'd be serving 3 years later. Whether a war zone or at peace, no one leaves the service the same why you came in. I hope he's better now.❤
... and remember to vote!
Everything ebbs and flos
I was in 6th grade when 9/11 happened, learning about what human beings are capable of turned me bitter.
"Keep hope alive" was Jesse Jackson's campaign slogan when he ran for president in the 80s. 😂
I'm 72 and appreciate this man more than any news anchor. His humor, caring, and reality are refreshing.
The difference between hope and despair is a viable plan.
incredible line.
I'd love to have a viable plan to survive what could hit us this 11/5.
The difference is also Trump v Biden
Okay, sure I can take care of myself, but what do we do about hunger and homelessness in a time where our government can't even deal with existential threats like climate change and potential nuclear wars?
The difference between hope and despair is a video game.
Jon Stewart handling an audience question like the genius that he is. There are very few public figures as quick witted.
I came here to say exactly that. Sheer genius. A very, VERY, smart man.
I really wish he would run. The fact that he is absolutely against it makes him more qualified in my eyes.
Future President Stewart
Exactly. This is the kind of clip that needs to be seen by those who know nothing about him and still say (or type) things like "Stewart has writers. He doesn't think of anything by himself."
Apparently you've never seen Colbert answer audience questions.
This is why teaching real history is important; so people learn how to avoid getting to the point we got to now
TY
Flip it on its head and you'll see exactly why reactionaries fight to prevent exactly that. The less the younger generation knows of the past, the easier they are to mislead and exploit
I remember history class, in the 1970's, it was basically remembering dates so that you wouldn't fail the next test. I severely doubt things have changed, because clearly we are repeating the same history lessons not learned. Until we get BIG money out of elections then this will just keep on keeping on..... and FFS how is paid, sanitized corruption in the form of 'Lobbyists' allowed?
That’s why we need to combat bad readings of history that cast people as oppressors/oppressed.

John Stewart is genuinely the only voice right now that makes me feel like I'm not going insane.
The other day I jokingly told my husband, when he asked what I was watching, that I was watching videos of my therapist. (He immediately knew what I was watching. 😂 ) I seriously believe that his voice has been helpful for the mental health of many of his viewers.
You might try Beau of the Fifth Column as well.
Beau covers topics such as U.S. politics, racism, climate change, equality, police use of force, authoritarianism, survival, community support, and foreign policy with a calm and rational approach. He’s the opposite of an alarmist and quite centering.

So Nixon and all that Watergate nonsense and "it's not illegal when the president does it" never worried you or were you a hippie at the time?
I'm about to turn 62 and Jon is spot on. My son is 35 and bought a small home, is successful in the field in which he earned his degree, not married but would like to be and have children, but is seems more cynical than the people younger than him. I told him how proud I was he bought a house and he said "Mama, I'm might be the last one of my generation to get that opportunity and it's not right.". He sees things very clearly compared to where I was at his age. At least he's aware of those coming up behind him are going to have more roadblocks. I think it the information age that's has shaped many a young mind, for better or for worse.
I'm 44 and I watch daily show so that when I hear of all the crazy things happening, I can actually smile instead of getting despaired.
Jon Stewart’s return to The Daily Show continues to be an enlightening and entertaining event. At age 65 I agree with Jon
I remember being in a panic at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis when we were a heartbeat away from nuclear war. I, too, remember when our top leaders were being gunned down. Those were also terrible times. I'm now 80 and the one thing I know for sure is that life is sweet at any age as long as we continue to do battle for "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" against those who would steal it from us. Vote Blue up and down the ballot.
Vote for liars perverts and gaslighters?
Very well said! I grew up at the same time. Very accurate view!
I was just a baby at that time, but watched MLK's funeral on TV. My folks let me stay up late and I saw RFK on TV during his last hours on earth. I remember watching those desperately trying to get on those helicopters out of Saigon. The Iran hostage crisis that gave us Nightline. The riots arising out the verdict of the cops who beat Rodney King, and video. That's every decade growing up. Whoa, Jon wasn't kidding was he, but I digress. However definitely within the last three hours, the Cuban Missile Crisis has returned....it's just now referred to as Drumpf/MAGA/Project 2025. But we can't give up, but living with Drumpf et al succeeding this time will make the 50's-60's look tranquil.
I'm 80 and will never forget that time, nor the assassinations and everything else, one thing after another. Life is indeed sweet, especially for those well off in a democracy, and we must fight to retain the rights our forefathers/mothers won with great sacrifice.
Vote 💙 help make America sane again and vote like your future depends on it because it does I'm 66 my heart died when they took RFK
Difference between that 19 year old in the audience and 19 year old Jon is that back then there was no internet. You weren't being bombarded with politics and current events. People were focused on more practical aspects of life and living it at a slower, healthier pace. Now everyone's hyper informed to the point where they're always worried about everything.
Also 19 year old John probably had a way higher expected purchasing power. Before the government & financial institutions went bananas on the economy.
We all have a choice to shut it off, or curate when and how much information you get ....like I do.....turn off social media for a few days a week....in the end we all have the capability
I'm a bit older than Jon. In the '60s, '70s, and '80s, we also talked to each other about issues, our peer groups. We did read newspapers and periodicals that gave aspects of world events, and when it was important to us, we watched nightly world news. We asked questions of our parents. And we all used the telephone. We grew up with some sense of civic duty. Collecting coins for Unicef while we went trick or treating, doing walk-a-thons for the March of Dimes, my sister and her friends even organized a fundraising concert for the starving in Bangladesh. I'm sure you must know of all the various protests of those earlier decades. Somehow, people managed to organize and come together for their causes without the internet or cell phones. After home computer games, Atari , and Nintendo, it seems many younger people lost interest in the world.
John would have been 19 the year Reagan won reelection in a landslide.
And worse, misinformed with all of that hyper-informed tech.
"Blissful ignorance" or "Ignorance is bliss" is taking on a whole new significance now in this age of hyper awareness you spoke of.
Stewart has been such a breath of fresh air this election season.
I'll be 41 in November & when i say i feel like i was blessed to be born just in the nick of time, man...... Old enough to kno what life was like before camera phones & social media & finished school just before it all took off.
Everyone my age & older would like to be back in our prime youths, but not in this particular time period. I do not envy kids & young adults today
The downside is everyone smoked back then. Remember when smoking on airplanes was a thing? They’d have smoking and nonsmoking sections with no barriers between them?
I’m the same age and I agree completely…the ease in which the younger generations can be manipulated (through technology) is incredibly scary.
I’m happy I grew up before all the social media but at the same time it’s upsetting that as a society we’ll never know those times again
@@smitjimmers144 you're implying that 40 year Olds can't be manipulated through social media. Believe you me, they absolutely can.
I think this might be the first era in time when old folks don't envy the young _and go on to tell em that everyday._ I bet this'll make them feel much better than before 🤷
The downside to our age is, we were educated for a world that didn't exist when we graduated. Every math teacher I ever had said " you won't have a calculator with you at all times when you are an adult."......
"Hope is like the Sun, if you only believe in it when you see it , you'll never make it through the Night."
This felt crazy meta to me because when I was 19 I was watching Jon Stewart on the Daily Show to help me stay sane as we went through the end of the Bush admin and the 2008 recession. Makes me thankful a new generation has this type of content available to them to both synthesize the events of the day and find some humor in it in a way only Stewart and the DS team seem too be able to do so well.
There is more hope and compassion in this 4-minute clip than from most pulpits on this Sunday.
As the saying goes, things don't get easier, we just get stronger. I am 43 and believe you me, things that knocked me down at 23 I know them down now. Every phase brings its challenges and strength to continue fighting is one of the rewards of overcoming the challenges.
Do we get stronger or just acclimated and desensitized, constantly re-adjusting to a worse 'normal'?

Kudos to you young man for asking the question.
My all-time favorite quote: Pessimism of the Intellect, Optimism of the Will
"I’m a pessimist because of intelligence, but an optimist because of will."
Antonio Gramsci
I'm in my mid 30s and it's hard to be hopeful. It was a lot easier to be hopeful in the late 00's, than the mid 2020s.
I hope to be this sharp and in touch with culture by the time I'm 61 (which is not that old) and beyond. The fact that Jon can actually level with a 19 year old and speak their language shows how intelligent and observant he is. I know people younger than Jon who are living on an entirely different planet. It's so important to keep a pulse on current times and be able to contextualize it with the past that you've experienced.
As a fellow 19 year old this helps. It’s hard to have a perspective sometimes to realize that the world has never run smoothly, and it probably never will. I just have to remember that no matter what’s happening with the government they can never take away my humanity, I will always have my friends and people I love. If we can’t get a grip on the climate we will face catastrophe, but what am I to do about it in a government that does not listen. If we die we die, at least I lived to see it happen. Maybe some better life form on earth will succeed in a few millennia. But I have to believe we will make it, because somewhere at the core of everyone we care for each other.
Yeah, it's kinda grandpa talk, but to live in the early sixties, Soviets tried to install nukes on Cuba, Johnson decided to send US troops to Vietnam, all kinda dictators were ruling in Southern Europe, South America, democracies were as rare as a moment of brightness in either Trump or Biden... Yet there were loads of idealism and social movements starting up..
Might happen again in the late 20s. Minus a new Vietnam, that is.
we love you Jon Stewart.. thanks for decades of great service🥲
This is why teaching real history is important; so people learn how to avoid getting to the point we got to now
And youth needs to take to the streets
History teaches us that most people never learn anything from it.
Thank you for coming back when you were most needed.
I am 64 and teach at university, and constantly probe my students on how aware and engaged they are in the real goings on of the world that they live in outside of the internet- the real world. The reality of their responses can be immensly surprising- in short, do I simply expect more from them or is there truly so much disconnect from the understanding and implications of our current world. These are intelligent individuals- it is the awareness, or lack thereof at times, of crucial knowledge that often surprises me.
As John noted, the 60's and 70's were certainly some heavy times and we tended to be wholly aware of how tense it was. I had a wonderful, typically American childhood, but there was always that cloud of insanity hovering off in the distance.
Keeping our chin up and being positive about our own childrens future is admitedly a rough go lately. We press on.
As one of the "youths" I'll tell you a lot of us feel paralyzed by the sheer deluge of information and so periodically bury our heads in the sand to escape the firehose of horror. It is often difficult to pluck the gem of important knowledge out of the sea of garbage. It's almost worse if you are intelligent and do really care deeply about truth and justice lol. The pressure felt to know every detail about every atrocity and every political situation and every movement OR ELSE face being a "bad person" is often overwhelming. Which is of course ridiculous because it's literally impossible to know everything, let alone participate in everything, not to mention super unhealthy mentally, but there you go.
Turn it off and go outside. Not in a car, that don't count. If you're in a city, go to the park or the waterside, walking bridge is fine too. Whenever that man is in the media again, I just tune out and go where the sun shines and the air is fresh. No law or bad times can't take that away.
Saved me a _lot_ on meds and psychiatry :D

Well said.
Beautiful, Jon you speak the truth of Generation Jones (I'm 63), otherwise known as Tail-end Boomers. For me, every time people say, "How could this get worse?" I think back to the morning that my siblings and I were quietly watching cartoons on the B&W Admiral TV, then saw breaking news of RFK's shooting and subsequent death. When we awoke my parents in their bedroom off of the living room with our crying,, they thought we were confused and seeing something old about JFK.
How can it get worse? Children raised today worry less about civic leaders being assassinated and more about themselves and their classmates. Our "duck and cover" drills were nothing compared to today's active shooter drills in schools.
I'm 61. We are not Boomers. The cut off for Boomers is those who could be drafted (born 1956). We're GenX. The media pushed the Boomer category younger because no one wanted to admit that Obama is GenX, but without that risk of being drafted for Vietnam, it was a different experience
@@mjb495What? GenX is a myth! At least, pollsters rarely acknowledge us. 🙁
I have a daughter that worries about paying her rent, paying her bills and is stressing out about everything and asking me if things will ever get better, I understand the question!! But facts are facts, and we can't change facts!! And if the facts create stress and our mind creates even more stress because we fear the future!! There is a quote I once heard that really hit home, "Sometimes we need to unclutter the cluttered mind"!! Take care of the problems you have; don't create problems you don't have!! Take a deep breath, fix the known and stop worrying about the unknown! PLAN for the unknown, don't stress over it!!
I was watching The Daily Show back in the day at that kid's age. Even younger in my teen years. That kid rules.

Same generation - I’m 60. I believe we had more optimism & a firmer sense of stability due to a shared national narrative. We had political differences, but the news cycle was contained - it went off the air after the 11 o’clock news & wasn’t “angertainment.” There was no profit in divisiveness. Once all that changed (hello Rush) & the internet took over things became dystopian. American society now needs to consciously choose not to be part of that cycle or it will destroy us.
Also keep your own intent; Rupert😢 Murdoch engineered Fox News to break the power of unions, and other advocates for the working man and woman.
This happened under Regan with relaxing the SEC control on media's evolution in cable TV.
there's being optimistic, then there's deceiving yourself with optimism. know when to cut & run.

At 19 he went through shutdowns in High School(?). I see College kids & realize they went through a very uncertain time. As we all saw, not all parents handled it well. I’m Jon’s age & will never forget the tanks going by to Kent State. I was 4. My 8 brothers & i didn’t know what to do so we saluted as they passed. Life. Ever evolving (unless you’re a white male Republican)
even now at 74 kent state, the DNC makes my whole body shiver. we lived thru it watching tanks in the streets in chicago, protesters, rioting, worst times ever. can u imagine if it was ignored and noone cared. more scary.
White male Republican?? you have issues. And they have nothing to deal with white male Republicans.
I'm going to start posting this everywhere: Reject hope, take up purpose. Hopes can be dashed, but purpose cannot. With purpose, one can work towards what matters, even if the future is impossibly dark.
I love John Stewart, whenever either he or Jordan are hosting I’m watching!!! Superb comedians
There's an elephant in the room here, that marks out John Stewart (and me) from our kids. If we go on as we are, when that 19 year old kid is 61, he will be living on a ravaged planet. We are facing an existential crisis that no amount of wisecracking will face down. This is new to our species and we're really struggling with it. But to be sure, what our kids face is a crisis that makes WWII look like a picnic in the park.
I'm a bit surprised Mr. Stewart didn't bring up 9/11. Talk about things that sapped hope and optimism. Those were very dark days, and we survived them (not unscathed, and not without further losses and damage to our social fabric, but we survived them as a society).
What I tell my students is this: we live in an era where enormous problem like climate change are coming home to roost, and they can seem unsolvable and paralyzing. We face the specter of conflict between the US and Russia and China in a way that seems more imminent than any time since the mid-1980s. Yet, this is probably the best time to be a living human being in the history of our species. Life expectancies worldwide have never been longer, technology has made connections and innovations possible that were unimaginable just fifty years ago, and fewer people (as a percentage) live in abject poverty. Despite the horrors of the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, it is still mostly true to say that we are living in the longest period of sustained peace between major world powers in the past 800 years. Minority groups have never had more opportunities and power in the USA than they do today, despite the systemic challenges they still face. There is much that must be done, and there is much to fear. Yet, look how far we've come.
I must be one of the oldest here, 80. I was born during the Second World War, which I don't remember but which was a horrifyingly massive threat to civilization and democracy. When I was 19 we had the Cuban Missile Crisis and threat of nuclear destruction. From the McCarthy era on, it's been one crisis after another, one Republican disaster after another, and I thank Jon for reminding us of that in a warm and humorous way. I still feel for young people, though.
Well I would imagine that at 61 you made it most of the way and you only have a couple decades to hope for. Your expectations on life are fairly limited so if the near future looks like a climatic collapse of civilization, it might affect your direct family which is sad. But in the end, you made it most of the way through and it won't affect you as directly.
I can't even imagine what it is like to be 19 right now, the most important, fun and formative years of your life are likely to happen in the turmoil of the climate crisis...
I couldn’t love or respect him more Thankful for him
Have fun doing little things that make the world a better place. People appreciate the effort and you get to feel like you’re doing something with your life except going through the motions of work, eat, sleep, repeat. People might even take inspiration and do the same.
I asked the late Tim Russert a similar question once after a talk he gave in Georgetown. I talked about how a number of my friends in DC became consumed by the rampant cynicism and the constant quest for power and influence there, and that others had become disillusioned and had chosen to leave because it got too much for them. I asked him how he stayed grounded. He answered by talking about how learning to do hard work, humility and not forgetting where he came from helped him stay grounded.
Every time is both the best of times and the worst of times.

Great name for a news organization. Schrodinger's Times
Lack of leadership is a big part of the problem. I'm glad he brought that up. Kids now don't know what a "statesman" is.
We must encourage Jon to run for president.
No. He’s perfect right where he is.
Stewart for president! You can do it!!
It actually never gets easier
Exactly. Its life.
But you get stronger
@@myrojynsome people just survive.

Well this is a cheery group.
This is why teaching real history is important; so people learn how to avoid getting to the point we've got to know now.
First question asked gets replied like this.
Life’s natural medicine, more sleep, sunlight, water, and laughter
I always tell myself it's not this simple, but it really is. It doesn't solve circumstances but it certainly impacts how we keep it together
A meal made with love and a hot shower can make a world of difference too
And gin.
Once I was dozing on a boat in the sun listening to the waves and kids playing and laughing on the beach. One of the most blissful experiences.
I'm 19. I can't look at nature like a rainbow and just appreciate it without thinking about the suffering that I know is happening underneath that rainbow, which I will inevitably hear about and feel responsible for. I despair of making incremental change when systemic change is what is required and yet it'll never happen. I distrust everyone, I despise the world, and when I tell people I don't want to live here, they think I'm suicidal, but why would I want to live here? I'm just waiting to die, and hoping that beyond death there is some place where peace, and unconditional love, and justice exists, because it never has and never will here. Do you have any advice for me?
You just take it one day at a time, then look back one day and realize how much you've lived thru
I dunno how much hope I have.. but I have determination yet to spend... it'll do for now.
Hope is that which you have when you have nothing else left -Ernst Bloch.
Jon is 61 and I'm 68. He nailed it. 1968-74 were crisis years (tempered by the Carpenters on the radio ...) I've also heard that 1942-45 were a tad transformative, followed by Communists under every rock.
The Daily Show is definitely one of my comic reliefs 😀! Whenever bad things happen I always remember that it could always be worse.
In these current circumstances...
If neither candidate could talk- What does their personal and business record say for them..?
Joe's track record speaks loud and clear.
So does T's- but his says all the wrong fkn things.
Funny. Exact opposite

Here's what America remembers from T's term..
Mass unalive people everyday.
Defective medical equipment for helping to fill mass graves. Overwhelmed hospitals and medical staff. Refrigerated trailers of unalive ppl we love. No food or supplies on shelves. No jobs. No money. No traveling. No school. Zoom fkn funerals.
All while hbic of America says it's just a cold. Achoo. But unalive to this very fkn day. Maga response..? We like him cuz eggs and gas was cheaper then 🥴 Even though there were no eggs and no traveling with said cheap gas.
As if that is an acceptable trade for such tragedy.
Please share your memories as well.
So very true!
Actions speak louder than words...
Convict45 is full of personal, professional and presidential failure.
It depends who you ask though.
You're the best Jon! We need your raw honesty leading us. Love you my brother! Stewart 2028
Ill be honest Im 40 and I couldve asked that same question. Despair isnt solely restricted to the young..
I was not following much politics when i was 19 but i did participate in my first election at that age. This guy is getting ahead of staying informed by following Jon.
Money makes hope a lot easier.
Thank you for seeing from younger generation's perspective. It's refreshing to have someone from an older generation not just go "You'll see when you're my age" or something.
Asking a rich, famous person how they cope and expecting an answer that's gonna matter to you is just absolutely ridiculous. Jon is a smart guy, but he is so far removed from truly understanding what everyday, existential fear is like anymore. Ultimately, he is going to be fine no matter what happens and he knows it.
This respectful 19 yr old fan of The Daily Show obviously appreciates the chance to ask his question of Jon Stewart in person. Jon is one of the gems we need right now!
Jon Stewart for President 2024!
I want to see more of this pre-show Q&A. Do they post more?
I bow to the holy savior of the daily show

We just need these days about once every 20 years to get the high to maintain optimism ...
Love John. My bestie met him years and years ago
We just want someone who will speak to us like a person... RUN JON RUN!!!
That's what got us in to this mess.
I admire how he can just answer question of the cuff and have conversation
even winging it, jon manages to clearly get a message across clearly and concisely, i would vote for this man if he ran in a heartbeat
Sixty-one here as well. What helps is a sick sense of humor. Jon helps me get through it by reframing a lot of it in not-so-serious ways.
There is a Beatles song for everything. “We can work it out”. We’d all love to see the plan.
There is always 2 ways to look at every story. You can laugh at everything if you look at it from the right angle. Optimism is only a viewpoint away.
