Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man (Live in Chicago 1974)

- Here's one of the best renditions of "Ballad of a Thin Man" from the legendary 1974 tour. This was recorded at the Chicago Stadium on 4 January 1974, the second night of the tour. Dylan hadn't been on the road since 1966, but he came back full swing. Nearly every night of the tour was sold out before it began; Promoter Bill Graham estimated the gross revenue to be almost $100 million. This venue had a capacity of nearly 20,000. Although it was a commercially successful run, Dylan became weary of these massive crowds. This is one of the reasons why the subsequent "Rolling Thunder Revue" tour played mostly in smaller theaters and gymnasiums. Though Dylan may have preferred smaller crowds than this one, you'd never know; Live Dylan doesn't get much better than this!
On a separate note, I'd like to once more ask for your support. This is a free service, and I am a college student trying to make a living as a singer-songwriter, which has been difficult during the pandemic. If you enjoy Dylan, you might like what I have to offer. If you have the means, please purchase my new album "2nd Impressions":

One of the most important channels on CZcams
& one of the most important songs. Thanks Bob & SW!!
*the most important actually
Actually THE most important
I too just discovered Dylan a couple of years ago. I must have been under a rock. Since, read books from library....Rolling Thunder Review my favorite...purchased all.
And I am 76. Most brilliant man I have ever studied and I have a Masters degree. Lol.
@Sandra Smith I’m the same age as you and have been a Dylan fan since his first album release. I totally agree with your assessment and envy your late discovery of the goldmine that is Dylan’s life and work.
That's awesome! lol
Glad you came out from under that rock, Sandra! 🤣🤣🤣 You keep on moving & catch up, girl. “It’s all good”, as someone once said 😉
I’m 50 and grew up listening to my father’s Dylan records but he was strictly folk Dylan (not that there’s anything wrong with that). However, in after reading a couple books from the library like you in 2009, I decided to purchase EVERYTHING including vinyl and it’s been the most rewarding journey. Of course the bootlegs are where it’s at!!
Sandra, I am 76 also and been very interested in Bob Dylan since saw the Don't Look Back documentary was on PBS maybe 15 years ago or more. I am a writer and biographies have always been a main interest of mine. I wasn't a Bob Dylan music fan when I was young adult and had gotten his greatest hits album after watching his 30th Anniversary show at Madison Square Garden which I purchased the DVD of. Only in the past year or so discovered on CZcams, so I have been finding this huge number of songs on CZcams that I had never heard of. I listened to my old tapes from the local lite rock radio stations in SF Bay Area, and didn't even realize that "Knockin on Heaven's Door" I had recorded. I've always been a big Neil Young fan, Van Morrison, The Byrds and CS&N fan and didn't even realize that they toured with Bob.
Swingin! Perfect blend of the 1966 and the mid 1970's Bob voice. Love it!
We love you SP. I've only recently found you but I have yet to be disappointed
When Jimmy Carter was asked what his favorite Dylan song was in the now infamous Playboy interview, he gave the Very surprising answer... "Ballad of a Thin Man"...
Maybe that's because the song was so appropriate to this war criminal president!!!
@@robertpatterson3321 give it a rest, Trumpie
@Robert Patterson projection overruled, idiot.
Asked Donald Trump the same question and he replied:
The one with the extra Mayo & Fries.
Extraordinarily clear and awake Bob literally forces you to listen him .I can imagine how exhausting it was for him to stay so present with that crowd of people ..great document
Super. Long Live Bob Dylan
Hello Kevin how are you doing 😊
I was there that night... Thanks for the replay of this classic!
I `m from Eastern African Cushites and this man is the one I listen from America. I don't know but I feel that's he is not with every generation as he should be because everything he plays is the best or he isn't? Who can be better than him in the United States? In my taste of music and art, I think its the best when, everything is done a single person whether its the words, the beat and decision of what instrument. This man does everything.
That was fucking incredible!!! Just goes from 0 to 100 from beginning to end. I would go as far to say that this is one of Dylans greatest live performances.
It's non-stop discovery with Dylan. This is fresh and enjoyable. Thanks for sharing it for posterity.
Before the Flood makes it seem like they played everything super fast. But here we have a much more passionate performance of this song slowed down. Thanks for this.
Sure takes me back. And I would not mind staying here.
One of his best
I saw Dylan with The Band on the early 1974 tour at the Oakland Coliseum. Great show by all.
Yup, likewise, St. Valentine's Day Massacre, both concerts!!
Thank youuuuu Swingin’ 🌷👌 What (hollow)Sound👌from ‘74 Chicago Stadium! When we were young but were soo much younger than that now❣️🌹🌺💃🕺 Great Version! DearLennon🌺 in mind w this Sound recordings💥🌞
😍🥰🥰🥰Thanks!
‘74 was THE best tour! Dylan at his peak at this particular phase of his career. He’s had many phases, and oh so many peaks!
Wow ! He's actually singing the correct melody !
He’s just being confusing. 😉🤣
(But you’re right.)
You seriously dont understand the man do you mr jones
Those first couple of 1974 shows were great. Bob clearly got bored pretty quickly though and realised he needed to reinvent himself ... something he did to incredible effect the next year with Rolling Thunder Revue!
The one tune on the 1974 tour that approaches the live wire excitement of the 1966 tour
Agreed!
Very well expressed and true, IMHO
This is a revelation!
Great version you find some great stuff thanks for posting
My favorite singing era, if I can pinpoint just 1
Ballad of a Thin Man isn't a song. It's a way of being, it's a state of mind.
The Planet Waves tour with The Band... Sooooo Great!!!
A stellar performance. The sound quality of this is excellent. Cheers!
I was at the second show of the tour in Chicago. There was a lottery for tickets. You had to mail in a check. Something like 11% of the country participated. My first Bob concert. The anticipation was never duplicated- he’d been off the road since ‘66. I think the tour got too amped up as it went along. This performance was more controlled. Love it!
Excellent performance to my ears
Thank you Swingin’ 🐖
Very cool Bob taking us to school!
My God... This lyrics is anguishing....
Great photos too and love your description!
Also your original music is really fantastic filled with deep perceptions, imagery, and beautiful music! 🎶💫
This night went by in a "flash" Tickets were 7.50, 8.50 and 9.50 ! My 9'50 seats were awesome. Thanks for the memories!
This version is actually pretty good.
Great post. Thank you. Of all versions, this one is quite haunting.
great version the early shows are so underrated.
Way slower and more like the Highway 61 version compared to how they played this on Before The Flood which was like a month later
This IS from the Before the Flood tour, just a very early date in the tour. Dylan sings great here, much better than on the album.
I'm personally responsible for around 1000 of these views. Incredible!!!
This is amazing 2 maybe 3 Dylan's in one song😲
Was at the Forum, LA 1974..was awesome of coarse!
I love this channel so much
That '74 tour was Dylan & The Band at their greatest. To me, even beat '66. Thanks SW!!
Sorry. Great as this is it doesn't come close to 66, especially in England. Then again, nothing else has either. Death threats were common on that tour. That and the speed and whatever else they were taking made them play every show and every song as if it could be their last. You can't sustain that. The miracle is they got there at all, however briefly. And that motorcycle "accident" with the "broken neck"? People in Woodstock who knew Bob then considered it highly exaggerated, more an excuse to get off the road. They didn't talk about it at the time, believing the move probably saved his life. And they were probably right.
I flew from NY to see opening night from 5th row.. Thought he was more "intoxicated" than us....the Madison Square Garden concert on same tour was even better.
Cool stuff mr pig!! Cool footages also✌️
Growing with Dylan
Peak Bob vocals and intensity
Love it.
THANKS
Hey! I listened to your music you posted. It's really great, keep it up! It's like if Daniel Johnston played and sang better. I hope that's a complement. Vocals also remind me of the first Youth Lagoon album. Has a little Voxtrot in it too. I've been watching your videos forever, so I at least wanted to do the very least and leave a comment and say others should check it out
Thank you so much. Really appreciate your support and kind words. To be honest, I haven't heard much of the artists you mentioned, but I'm always looking for new inspiration so I'll have to check them out. Thank you :) Peace!
Love and peace. ☮️☮️☮️
Heavy and heavenly
Just seeing links to your stuff.... sounds great!! Poked around a bit, now starting 1st album. Everybody check the links!

2nd performance in 8 years! I uploaded the first in my channel.
The piano is the best part. Always has been. There's something in the pre-NET versions of this song that's not in the NET version (there's exceptions of course)
Thanks Siagon Pig!
Good version with feelings
De nuevo días llenos de Dylan
❤️
I was very dissatisfied as as a kid, we got a video player and I got don't look back. And I was hurt that Mr Dylan came across so cruel. But I was 11
Some things have to be said
Not cruel. Just says what he needs to say in a manner he feels is appropriate. A very introvert and fiercely defensive man. Does not suffer the proverbial 'asshole' lightly.
Emotional truth
Great, great, great. That's all
👏
Not sure if this was mentioned but this was a massive tour ‘before the flood ‘ I think with ‘The Band’ backing up and also as a double bill.,
Dylan, a lifelong love affair.
And im not even gay!
wow new photo.. neato
the back story puts the picture in perspective ...Dylan turned 80 recently, he's still making money
When that verse begins @ 3:24
The one about the professors...
So I see some of Jerry Garcia in there...
Where does he get those wonderful photographs? All of them...
Gratia, gratia SP, as always!
So awesome to hear this recording.
Also, Pig...if yuh kindly could...tell me who the Band members are here...Is it some of Them?
My hunch is that it is...
But I'm not sure if this is '74
@@HuckleberryAlexander I believe it is the regular band, Levon helm on drums, Rick danko on bass, Garth Hudson on organ, Richard Manuel on piano, and Robbie Robertson on guitar
But if Dylan is on piano then Richard may have also played organ, but if Dylan is on guitar then Richard is on piano
Hi Michael! Glad you enjoyed. I get some of the photos from Getty Images, and scan some from old magazines. Not sure specifically who was playing, but as I understand it, it was just the regular Band members; same setup as early '66.
Thanks guys. Yeah, it sounded like them to my ear. But I wasn't 100% certain. Such a blistering performance...made all the better by the "time warp" quality of it. '74'66
Sooo much better than Before the Flood
Chicago Stadium capacity more than twice 20,000.
This was great but the video of them playing this song in Newcastle 1966 just shatters everything...That one couldn't have been made by humans. Something else was flowing through them.
No thin soldiers ladies smile because same FOR no thin man perhaps machine...loveusaameri can achieve LOVE
Wonder if he was at the piano during this song like he was during 66 tour. Rare, if any, film of this tour. Do you know why? Thanks Swingin' Pig.
Glad you enjoyed! To answer your question, yes, Dylan played the piano on this song like he did in '66.
Damn dude where do u get all these videos and recordings ??
Love bob Dylan btw
Better than the version on Before The Flood.
My Dylan this was 40 yrs ago - love your remixing SP
Jeeeezuz
how do you understand the meaning of this song?
Sexi..after ,,, 3:04 20 years ago..Dylan is a master❤
Bob was about to start his third phase.
74?
Yes, he sounds kind of like he did in the 60s, but this was recorded in '74.
@@SwinginPig makes sense then, it must have been with The Band. Keep digging up that gold Pig! Its unimaginable to me how much hasn't been released. Cant wait for the new bootleg.
I love you, ZIMMEY! lm
ON Opening night Dylan seemed really wiped out...like he slept in a clothes dryer. But this is the second night.
Listening through a (high end) headset and I distinctly hear a woman speaking intermittently throughout the song.
