    Thank you for your service, I've been trying to research this stuff myself, and it's suprisingly difficult to find scrolls-like games. Kingdom come deliverance is closest thing I can think of, but I often feel that's closer to a historical immersive sim.

    I absolutely love the fact that you included some of the more unknown Elder scrolls games like Battlespire. That game is often forgotten. I also think you are right when you said an Elder scrolls is not strictly open world as the first game Arena didn't have an open world. . Some of these games looked kind of rough but were generally interesting to learn about. That last one Adalar looks like it could be a real success. Love the video really hope you do another one soon

      The first game Arena absolutely is open world! In fact it has the largest game map of all of the TES games still to this date.

    Not sure if it perfectly met the criteria, but Arx Fatalis seems like a pretty solid option if you dig morrowind

    From what I understand, most expensive part of open world rpgs like Elder Scrolls (even more open than something like Witcher 3 due to the number of permutations) is voice and animation work; and the optimization. So, it made me wonder why other indie studios have not done something like a retro-ish low fidelity game with all text to circumvent these

    This video should really be more popular it has some great info and is such a great concept as well as bringing attention to some of these games I had never heard of truly remarkable. If only I could like a video more than once.

    Towers 1 looks a lot like it was 'inspired' by the ssi d&d so called gold box games. Particularly dungeon hack. Only thing missing is the words of power which may be from games like legend of grimrock or similar. Lots of those had pc and amiga or atari versions

    • @TroopperFoFo
      @TroopperFoFo  Před 3 lety

      It probably was inspired by those games. The 90s sure did have a lot of weird dungeon crawlers.

    Seriously, you did the job and the video is not s random click bait video. Thank you for doing the extra mile.
    Now, about the clones... I can't believe the is no indie developer doing a base game and leave the rest to the modding community.
    When I searched for clones I was expecting to find procedural generation + first person medieval and for me, give me some survival stuff like having to camp and maybe hunt and stuff.and you have me hook, I don't meet the amazing world if I get lost in random woods and mountains with some random encounter here and there

  • @ryangaskin4796

    Are you going to do more videos like this it was really interesting to see the games you found that are like Elder Scrolls? I had no idea they anyone ever even attempted games in the same style. I knew dungeon crawlers like Legend of Grimrock existed but that isn't the same.

    The Two Worlds games (I think they are up to #3) are pretty close to worse playing elder scrolls games. First person, fantasy. Buggy. Didn't finish either but have played some of 1 and 2.

    I really don't think setting makes a huge difference as to whether it's a clone or not. In fact if I were making a clone then the first thing I would do would be change the setting up to distinguish it.

      I really wanted to like it and be into it but the faux-affine texture warping, fov, and head bobbing all gave me nausea and vertigo in a way that I’ve literally never felt from a game before. Had to turn it off after an hour because I legit felt like I was gonna be sick.

    A funfact: The prototype for Demon Souls was an Oblivion Clone. Fromsoft wanted to copy the Bethesda formula but couldn't get it work(technology limitations, etc). It was until the project head gets replaced by the legendary Miyazaki who wanted to make his own thing that we got the Demon Souls, and as a consequence Dark Souls, we love.

    Elder Scrolls is in a more generic genera, so most Elder Scrolls "clones" are just bad western RPGs, CRPGs, or dungeon crawlers. If it's a good game, than it's obviously not a clone, it's a western RPG, CRPG, or dungeon crawler.
