Highlanders and border horsemen are the core power of Scotland. Stat wise they seem weak but in practice they are very powerful. The Highlanders have a good charge, armor penetration, high damage and cheap upkeep. The border horse is quite average but can be upgraded and again cheap upkeep. Both are fairly fast so flanking for morale is easy. Causing the enemy army to mass route due to swarm of charging highlanders with flanking horsemen is fairly game breaking.

    Scotland
    Strengths: Pikes and Shock
    Weaknesses: Shots
They have good Pikes that comes from Cities and Castles, Mainly the Heavy Pike Militia and Noble Pikeman.
They're literally the only Faction that have their Citadel Unit trainable in the Last Barrack upgrade, the Noble Swordsman, which means if your Citadel have a Last Barrack Upgrade, you will have a Max of 9 Noble Swordsmen ready after a short time.
Their Highland Noble is quite weak IMO, but hey, Spear Militia+Highland Noble+Highland Noble Archer+ Mailed Knight with their full Armor upgrades make them have identical armor, which is quite cool.
Also you can roleplay as Isengard, with your horde of Urukhai Pikeman
Their Weakness is in Cavalry and Range, for Cavalry you can use your foot unit for flanking I suppose, but Mailed Knights is already a good cavalry for early to late game.
    for range... Mercenary Crossbowman

Also worth noting that highland archers and highland noble archers are armor-piercing in melee. Really handy. The nobles in particular are excellent at defending the walls. Fire a few volleys and then chop through the enemy in hand-to-hand.

Found the Highland rabble somewhat useful. At least more useful than peasants with other factions. They don't run so easily, and because their weapon is a knife, they attack very quickly.
Actually managed to take a few settlements with an army of just rabble.

It's 2021, and I've re-installed Medieval II: Total War, and I made a new grand campaign with Brave Scotland. It's on H/H (I want to sit back and chill a bit. VH can come another time)
Here are some tips I can give to those aspiring Scotland Players.
    1. _Unite the English Isles under Scotland._ Move fast. While the English are still moving about capturing Caernarvon, you should already have York and Inverness, and now on your way to Dublin. Once you've gotten Inverness, York, and Dublin, make your way south to Nottingham, Caernarvon, and then London, clashing with the English. While the English are Archer-heavy and with dangerous Spearmen, your Highlanders (AP axemen with good morale) can crunch the Spearman line and the Fast Moving Border Horse can rout Archers real easy (just keep in mind to flank them).
    2. _Economy can be a make or break_ The moment you unite the English Isles, cash flow will be a problem. _So make sure to convert all castles to Towns to at least fuel the economy._ Leave Nottingham or Caernarvon as a Castle, you still need to pump up the AP Highlanders who can go toe-on-toe on many Early Age Units. Don't make more than 2 standing armies (in case the crafty English/French/Portugese decide to invade the Isles), leave one as your Invading Force to push southward, and another to be your homeguard (half-stack at least)
    3. _Set Sail South!_ Once you've secured your position, saved some florins and built up your Trade Routes with the other factions, the world is now your Oyster. you can crunch the remaining English Faction at Caen, or bug the French, or invade Portugal. But what I did was reach the Agent Limit of Priests, load them on ships, and spammed them south at Marrakesh near the Iberian Peninsula, making life tough for the Moors, and then send the Invading Force south to take them on. Since you'll be up against the Cavalry-reliant Moors, make sure you got Highland Archers or higher to take them on well. Pikes are your friend on the south too. Also, I managed to get to Timbuktu and make bank for Ivory and Gold.
    4. _Push Eastward, or whatever_ Now that you're building your economy, I suggest you push further east, take on Ajaccio and Cagliari (near Rome), or go for Iraklion (isle of Crete), or make a staging area for our future Crusades to the East at Rhodes. Or start wars with the HRE, the Danish Isles, and push to Russia. And that's it! Enjoy your game moving forward. My aim is to basically camp out extremely east and meet the Mongols with the Noble Pikemen, and hear the crying horses.
Also, be smart with the Scots Unit Roster. They may be limited in selection (note the lacking Crossbow/Arquebusiers/Gunpowder troops), but they are very flexible in the battlefield. always keep a unit of Border Horse (or Two) to mop up the floor with retreating units, or harass the pesky missile units, use the Pikemen to the full by being a flank/rear guard, and take full advantage of the Noble Swordsmen (ATK 13) and Highlanders (ATK 11, AP). They are invaluable all through out, just rely on Mercenaries to fill in the blanks, and you'll get through with the Highlander way. Nevertheless, this is a fun faction to play with.
Thanks for this, Lugotorix! +Sub for you :D Your guides always make the itch to reinstall Medieval II, and it finally did. No ragrets.

    Lugotorix,
I see you've added some M2TW faction guides since I last looked you up. Couple of fun bit for you: the armor on a horse is generally called barding (the clothing/blanket-like thing) is also sometimes called a caparison. Also the Galloglaich are also called Gallowglass. I don't know much about them historically other than them being a thing in a few, technologically deprived areas of Europe (mainly Ireland and Sweden). They were used all the way into the Renaissance. Pretty poor in a stand up engagement, but great in hit-and-run warfare (especially in the Swedish War of Independence in the early 1500's).
Good video. Keep at it. If you are able to, I'd like to see what you say about the Aztecs. I realize they aren't playable in single player outside of the Americas expansion, but maybe that would make for some interesting extra insight. I know the Byzantines get A LOT more frightening in the Crusades expansion, so maybe they could merit a second video.

In Sweden they were probably Irish and Scottish mercenaries, the Scots were every bit as prolific mercenaries as the Swiss. Doesn't mean that Swedes didn't fight in the same manner of course.

I think it would also be viable to ignore france for the time being and go for denmark and iberia. Now, the reason for that, is that portugal and denmark, as you said, are basically the only factions that will attack you on your beautiful island. So getting rid of them would be good and you also gain control of 2 half islands that you can defend also very well against france and the hre and you gain access to the mediterranian.
What you then basically have, is a split empire with no real threat other than france and the hre, but the good thing is, you have france pincered between britain and iberia and if you go over the mediterraniand or take france by this tactic you can also pincer the hre and establish a big empire relativley easy.
This might be a more advanced tactic but defenetely viable and very interesting.
Otherwise, good guide, get britain and you can't really go wrong anymore, only problem, scotland is really lacking in good troops.

    Reminder:
    1. Highland Rabble actually cost more than Normal Peasant, just because they have Higher Morale than Peasant
    2. Scotts Pike Militia is better than Regular Pike Militia because they're available in Stone Wall City(Minor City), while other faction gets Pike Militia in Huge City, so you can use them earlier.
    3. Heavy Pike Militia is one of the best pikeman due to being available in Large Stone Wall City(Large City), you can use them as a field army due to their good stats, they have 8 Armor and 3 Defense, and most unit with 3 Melee Defense(not counting armor and shield) is already Castle unit Quality, since almost all Normal City units only have 1 Defense supplemented by armor and shield, Town Militia have 7 Defense due to having 6 Shield and 1 Melee Defense, same with Spear Militia.
    4. Noble Pikeman is available in both City and Castles, mainly in Huge City and Citadel, making them a very versatile unit in the campaign, since you can get them easily in late game.
"They got Thick Metal Armor" They use Partial Plate, and upgraded to Full Plate.
    5. Highland Nobles, 9 Defense, 5 From Armor 4 from Melee Defense, 4 MELEE DEFENSE, this is their Fortress Barrack unit mind you.
    6. Noble Swordsman is like Chivalric Knights, but super easy to come by because you get them from Citadel and Last Barrack and cheaper in upkeep.

Watched all 17 of these and thought they were pretty good. 2 comments: 1) it would be useful if you identified whether the units came from castles or towns and 2) Ballistas are extremely useful in counter-siege efforts. In my current campaign (Russia) I have only had the AI end a siege by an assault twice (1-1). Move the ballistas (2 works well) to the flank of the besieging force and shoot them to pieces. You need some cav to secure against archers and cav but the mass of the besiegers will not turn to face you. QED.
