Magic Items to Troll your DnD Party With

- Flame Tongue swords and potions of flying are great - but what about when you want to have some fun and troll your party? Sometimes the magic items your party will remember most fondly are the ones that are out of the ordinary, either because they had silly abilities or interesting side effects. In this video, I give you 14 magic items that you can use in your own games: Some will make your players groan, but some might have some very cool uses if they're clever enough!

I love the hat of previous desguise, its not so powerful that you can't give it to your players at low levels, but also perfectly usable at higher levels. Plus it will lead to stories that are much more interesting than a regular hat of disguise would!

love the holy revenger idea with the peasant. My players murked a peasant on session 1 just over a year (real time) ago and haven't done any murderhobo stuff since. Can't wait to surprise them with this!

I enjoy using the statuette of mashed potatoes. It will provide your players with enough nutrients to not require eating rations while on the road, but can't be turned off, so whatever pack you hold it in will become slimy with mashed potatoes as you walk around with it.

I once played a magic user who carried around a long sword. This was in an old-school system that forbade MUs from using swords. It was a cursed weapon that my character had tried to use Identify on. But that activated the curse and he had to carry it everywhere. Fortunately, it also gave him +2 AC. So, it wasn't totally useless. Useful items with some drawbacks, I think, are pretty cool.
Agreed, cursed items that are all negative can be a drag. Clearly the fact you remember it fondly still shows it was a cool item!
Bagpipes of invisibility (grants invisibility while played) makes more sense than a bell that keeps ringing. Same concept though.

The later healing potion would work great as an alternative to feather fall, just yeet thyself from yon battlements and get up next round.

In today's session I had one of the shopkeepers offer my party the Hat of Previous Disguise, Later Healing Potion, Bell of Invisibility and a couple of other items I made up being inspired by your suggestions. They loved it so much that they bought everything! Now I can't wait to see how they'll utilise them as the campaign goes on :D

Fun ideas! It's been years (20?) since I've played....but this really takes me back!
Two unusual items I designed: glass-sword....+10 single use (it shatters)
Demon (CN) [maybe it was a 1/2 demon? Not sure.] possessed sword that took a liking to our paladin. As a not-evil powerful sword.....paladin certainly was interested, but very conflicted over the 'demon' bit. (A bunch more complexity to this, but I've forgotten most of the details.)
Thanks for sharing! Possessed items are always fun, and I really love the glass sword concept! I can imagine the players pulling it out in their time of need and what a great moment that would be!

Nice set of items. Were these from a book or all these deviations of things that were in books - Like the Hat of Previous Disguise?
Some of these are plays on existing items, and some are ones that I came up with myself! Items like the Hat of Previous Disguise and Armor of Slipping and Sliding are ones I used in my game, while others I made up for the video. So I'd love to hear what you think if you get a chance to use any!
