Massive Ponderosa Pine! 5 Day Turning! - Wood Turning

  • This was just a lot of work, no way around it. The piece started and ended at 17 1/2" at the widest point which is just about the max size for my 18" lathe. The top was not flat so had to remove 1 1/2" in height to level it. It was and is out of balance so the whole turning was done at under 400 RPM. I'm glad I did it and I like the outcome but won't be doing another this size anytime soon! LOL! Finished in shellac.

Hi Phil Waaaou. Big turn. The bark on the edge, looks like an eagle in flight, with wings spread out. Pretty. Pretty. Pretty. She flew over the tops of the Shady Acre Trees Tops, and decided to metamorphose herself into a bowl. Despite that we can hear the fatigue in your voice at one point, it is a beautiful bowl.
Forest fire smoke wise, I have been pretty lucky. Bought two air purifiers: one for the car; one for the house. Our air quality has been much better than it has been for some.

Phil - I'm my...ahem...humble opinion... This is the best piece I've seen you create. I love everything about it. I am especially proud of you for leaving the wide margin on the top and then put the little lip on it. It's perfect. I know it was a ton of work, but you started with a good piece of wood. You should always be working with good pieces of wood Phil and this bowl is proof of it. Please don't devalue your talent. You're really good.
    >>>>>>>>This piece should be in a high end gallery, and priced accordingly. It's absolutely superb.

Well that was sure worth watching because of its sheer size. You are wonderfully entertaining with your running commentary keeping us totally in the picture at all times. Five days was a heck of a commitment on your part & might I say, you did a fantastic job of editing it down. You have a style & presentation that is uniquely Phil Anderson & please don't ever try to change it. Thanks to your perseverance & skill this is a magnificent bowl & worthy of all the praise being expressed by all who admire your work. Your commitment to retaining as much bark & natural elements in each piece is highlighted in your skill in patching up all the missing pieces of bark & work with the angle grinder to achieve your final result. Great piece of work & great finish too, especially considering it is Pine & not noted as a high quality wood for finishing. Stay well my friend, Don from South Aust.
