  • The Red-Hot Poker - 'Kniphofia' is a fantastic and mostly hardy addition for the exotic, tropical-effect garden. Often bought as bare root plants in the spring there are a few issues which can arise when compared to established pot grown specimens. However, English horticulturists Simon and Lorna point out the most common problems and how to resolve them.

Hi there, and welcome to the channel. We are glad the video was of use to you. We have about 6 still waiting to go in and yet I still bought another cultivar yesterday, which caught my eye. I probably have enough now. Good luck with your new plants. They are a great choice for any garden. Simon

Greeting's from Ireland, I bought two popsicle plants a relation of red hot pokers from the local garden centre a few years ago and decided to be greedy and split each into four giving me eight plants. That winter it rained and rained and the root's turned to mush but sure look it was worth a try.

I am sorry to hear that didn't work for you Nicholas, usually they split quite well. Simon

I always forget the UK doesn't have hummingbirds. I got red hot poker seeds, actual tiny seeds. I can't find any video of seeds, mine aren't bulbs. They look like grass blades or chives right now under the grow light. I can't plant until the end of May at the earliest. It's still snowing. I got 2 deep pink/red Dahlia bulbs from a Costco mixed pack I want to put next to the red hot pokers. I'm growing everything from seeds or bulbs this year, and barely know what I'm doing.

Hi Paul, I WISH we had hummingbirds! Plant propagation is a massive subject in itself. If you are not sure which technique you need the RHS and Gardeners world websites are always good to look at. The RHS also has a fantastic book on propagation if you can get hold of that. Good luck. Simon

Can they be grown in Indian Subtropical climate where winter doesn't go below 5°C and summers can reach upto 43°C?

Hello Manishhkr and thank you for this great question. First. I will be honest and say that I have no experience in growing plants in that kind of climate. However the weather in southern Africa is not dissimilar to yours. Winters can go to -2, symmers average 34 with possible highs until 50 which is way too hot for me! There are tender species out there that we don't have in the UK so I am not familiar with the names however I would definitely have a go at growing the most exotic looking ones such as northiae, rooperi and caulescens. I wouldn't be the least surprised if you had success with these. Kind regards and good luck, Simon.
