How to Get to Tresco Island, Isles of Scilly
walkingtalkinggardener
Tresco island is arguably the most beautiful and natural of all the Isles of Scilly, however being 24.5 nautical miles away from the UK mainland access to the island can be a little awkward as you can only get there by boat, plane or helicopter! So to find out exactly how you can get there check out our 'How to get to Tesco Island, Isles of Scilly' video, where we explain all - including our own choice for reaching Tresco.

And when should they be planted out in the ground? (I live in Sweden with cold climate). 🌸

    Hello ..... I'm growing a couple of Camelia Sinensis bushes in SA. The bigger one has a decent amount of flowers now, the smaller one has none at the moment. I've read that Camelias don't 'self-pollinate'. Does that mean it can't pollinate on the same plant (different flowers), or just that it cannot pollinate the same flower? I'm hoping it can pollinate the same plant! Thank you. Regards

    When should you use fertilizer for Alium? I read late summer is best. I have them in pots, lots of sun but NO flowers yet. They were transplanted from a smaller pot from my local Home Depot

    • @walkingtalkinggardeners
      @walkingtalkinggardeners Před 6 dny

      Hi Kourtney, alliums will fair far better in the ground. However, if you have heavy clay or conditions prone to water logging, especially over the winter then keep them in the pots. They tend to prefer nutrients and poor soils, but you can apply a liquid soluble fertiliser in the spring when the new growth occurs. In the ground, they don't really need it, but the will in pots. Feed fortnightly from when new growth emerges and for the next 2-3 months. Regarding guant allium bulbs, they need to be a decent size before they can flower, if they were small when you bought them, it might be a year or two before they bloom. But it will be harder to get them into condition when growing in a pot. Kind regards, Simon

      Hello Liz, I hope you have settled in well at your new home. Sadly, your bougainvillaea won't do too well in the UK. It's not warm enough over the summer, and the cold will kill it off over the winter. That's not your fault. It's garden centres selling inappropriate plants! It's all about money now rather than providing and advising on the right plant. Research your plants first and consider choosing ones with the RHS award of garden merit as these have been trialled for robustness. Also, the biggest killer of plants is over watering! As a very general rule. Allow the top couple of inches to dry out before watering. Some may need more, and some will need less, but check requirements online. Good luck, Simon

Like how rain water can back up on a thickly mossed roof and find away over the top of the roof tiles, especially on any runs of roof guttering. Or just simply lifting the roof tiles as the root plate expands? This has even happened on our house. But no, I haven't seen any documentation of house 'leeks' fixing leaks being true. Hello dear Simon, I do hope you are doing well. Although it is piping hot here in Germany at the Moment, i will bother you again with some cooling questions what winter-protection of Treeferns concerns. I actually followed winter temperatures once in a while of Tasmania and there are many nights with temperatures lower than minus 5 or bit lower on the celsius scale. I will follow your advice what wrapping and watering/fertilizing concerns next winter. Just to make sure: Watering 2-3l every 2 weeks and fertilizer in a weak solution once every month or 6 weeks. Is that correct, roughly? But now i am enjoying new fronds coming up. 6 are visible already and maybe there are more to come? Enjoy the hot summerdays and thanks for taking up your precious time for responding . With kind regards Hello from Germany Uwe

    • @walkingtalkinggardeners
      @walkingtalkinggardeners Před 9 dny

      Hi Uwe, tree ferns are a mid canopy plant so while temperatures will drop they have the protection of the forest canopy above them, leaf litter in the crown and the trunk protected by the previous years collapsed fronds so there is a lot of natural protection. There are a number of methods gardeners use from literally doing nothing (which is a terrible idea) to building a frame around the entire plant and backfilling with straw. I will, of course, be biased and say that my overwintering management gives UK growing tree ferns the best spring start and minimal crown shrinkage, but others can disagree. It's all just guidance with others can decide to use or not. Simon

      Hi there, start them in the spring so they are ready to pot on and harden off after the last frosts have passed. That way you will have the whole growing season to put on some decent size. Simon

    Really enjoyed this video and will look forward to more. Can I make a few suggestions? 1) If someone asks a question (v hard to hear) can it be put on screen? We only hear the reply! 2) a list of all the plant names spoken of (eg the ‘pea family’ plant at time stamp 5.23) and 3) lastly, the date the video was filmed? We visited Tresco in September 2022 so it was interesting to see it at what seemed to be a different season.

      Hi there, and thank you for getting in touch. Unfortunately the second microphone failed right at the beginning of filming which was a complete pain, but with decent speakers or headphones you can hear the questions fine although they will be quieter. In the main we just let Andrew do the talking with little input from us. We changed to a different camera after this video so you should be able to hear all of us much better then the next couple of instalments. All the filming on Tresco was done last week. Unfortunately, I won't be putting a list of all the plant names in the description because of time constraints and it will be out of context. The relevant names are listed within the body of the video itself, plus there will be further videos to come where we Lorna and I do our own tour with the names on the screen as well as a few videos honing in on some of the specific plant species. Yes, that pea plant Andrew called Perligula! I have never heard of it, I can't find any references to it and I can't find a pea family plant with even a similar sounding name. The problem with these more exotic gardens is that it the range of plants can be very different to those that I would be familiar with on the UK Mainland so while my plant knowledge is good there are always plants that I have never come across before like this 'Perligula'. Another thing to consider is that even experienced gardeners can sometime incorrectly name plants. I do it myself even when I my brain knows full well what it is called, it just doesn't always connect to my mouth. Great questions though, thanks. Simon

    Interesting video…One of my favourite salvias such a dramatic plant. Bought my first online and now have quite a few (from cuttings, but didn’t realise you could roots them in water!) Also you say they are hardy…I will try one this winter outside…presumably cut back the stems and mulch++? I have only grown in pots so far and then put it in an unheated greenhouse for the winter (am in UK) Thank you

      Yes they are cold hardy down to around about -5 Celsius but they won't like a combination of wet roots and freezing conditions like we had last winter. I had a couple die but I still have one to take more cuttings from. I would advise keeping a couple in the greenhouse just as a back up if this worked well for you in previous years. Yes cut back stems and yes provide a dry mulch. Simon

    If i put pine needles in/around camellias, will that help the acidity in soil? 🦘🇦🇺

      Hi Kylie, yes you can do this but avoid having the needles around the trunk as with any mulch. Simon

    My parents have 2 camellias in their fron yard🦘🇦🇺 semi shade. They were scrawny, untill the pine tree fell and was removed.. now they are 8 ft tall, and full shrubs.

      Yes, it can be difficult for plants to compete with a mature pine tree for water and nutrients. Simon
