  • He was born on July 31, 1909 in Washington, D.C.
In addition to big-time vaudeville, Mousie Garner appeared on Broadway and in major national touring companies; in short subjects, feature films and documentaries; on network television, cable and radio shows; and in nightclubs, auditoriums and concert halls.
Mousie Garner made his stage debut as a child in 1913, singing, dancing and imitating Al Jolson in a family musical-comedy act developed by his father. While still a child, Garner entertained soldiers during World War I. By the time he was a teenager in the 1920s, he had already decided upon a career on the vaudeville stage. Garner was part of Ted Healy's new stooges after the departure of Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard. Garner, also known as "The Grand Old Man of Vaudeville", was one of over 20 comedians who worked as part of Ted Healy's stooge act with his cousin, Jack Wolf (father of Warner Wolf) and Richard "Dick" Hakins between 1922 and 1936.[1] He was never a member of The Three Stooges at the same time as Larry Fine, Moe Howard, Curly Howard or Shemp Howard, although he would later join the New Three Stooges in 1975 with official Stooge Joe DeRita for that act's very brief run.

    Hi Bill,
Thanks so much for posting this! Mousie was a character, for sure! A good friend of mine who I used to work with at Technicolor, co-authored several books on the history of Healy and the Stooges with his Brother - and actually took Mousie in, and cared for him during the last part of his (Mousie's) life. Really enjoyed viewing this awesome bit of Stoogedom, thanks again!

Great interview, I find this most interesting, thanks for posting Bill. I wonder if Mousie were alive today if I could see him perform at the Vacation Inn down on Route 89, two shows a night, 8:30 and 10:00, no cover, no minimum. ;)

Man, that interviewer is so oblivious! Get someone that knows showbusiness to interview these legends!

Define “oblivious”. To what?? I’ve been in show business for 50 years. What do. YOU know.

Saying he was one of the Three Stooges is like saying Pete Best was one of the Beatles. Part in the very shallow, technical sense. No one on planet earth really remembers seeing Pete as one of The Beatles. Likewise, no one recalls watching Mousey as one of the Stooges. This video is only interesting as a trivia piece. Nothing more. He's never been one of my Three Stooges. Nope not ever.

According to Moe's Biography, he was rehearsed as a Stooge replacement, but was "Unacceptable ".
