REUNITED // Putting Up the LOG WALLS on our Log Cabin Kit Home - Ep. 39

- When our cabin kit home first arrived, Sara’s parents were kind enough to take our two kids on a summer adventure with them so we could get a strong start on building our log cabin kit home. While our kids were away, we were able to set our foundation beam, lay the floor joists and subfloor, and start the log walls of the log cabin! Now, we’re getting ready to REVEAL the cabin progress to our kids. We are SO excited to reveal our future home to our kids
And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on CZcams. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 9 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the summer of 2022. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

Don't really have any questions to be honest because you're explaining what you're doing very well.
I SUBSCRIBED BUT I GOT TO FIND THE FIRST VIDEO. 🌈THANKS 🙏. ✝️
You know your doing things right when the supervisor is an owl that was so beautiful
We feel so lucky that that owl has hung around our land. Our kids named him Chad and we all have so much fun getting these amazing close up views of him (or her).
@@OneFootOfftheGrid congrats on keeping him/her around they are great for keeping mice away and you all are doing a great job on your cabi
Great progress. Build is looking great. Wanted to add... the way you two look at each other warms my heart. It's really sweet and we can see the love, affection and the respect you have for each other.
Awwww! Thank you! We’ve referred to this as “Marriage Bootcamp” a few times. Luckily, we get along about 95% of the time.
Wow you 2 have knocked it out in a months time👍👍✌
It feels good but man have we been pushing hard. Will be good to work towards getting dried in so we can take a little break.
The owl's assistance was so delightful!
Wow, wonderful progress 🙂👍 good job.
So much fun to see the excitement of the kids seeing the house!! Also love the plaid 🤣🤣
I liked the joy of the kids. Looking good 😉☺️
Excellent work! 👍🙏🏼🙌🙏🏼👌👏👏👏
Thank you!

Thank you!
Wow, great progress. Well done.
Thank you so much!! We're super excited about the progress!!
Thrilled to see the kids,
Thank you! It was SO fun to see their reaction.
This is actually really neat. I have never seen one of these type of homes being put together before, thank you for taking us alone on your journey. I can’t describe it but for some reason I want to play with Lincoln logs all of a sudden. LOL
It is totally like Lincoln logs. Huge and heavy Lincoln logs. Thank you so much for watching.
looking good.....level is horizontal......plume is vertical
Plumb..
Wow it so cool for the kids to be surprised to see how it looks you guys are doing an awesome job thanks for sharing your video🙌🙌🚧⚒🛠👍👊🏆
Thanks for watching and your support! It means the world to us to have people cheering us on.
Wow now you are building a house. It's really coming together. Welcome back kids
We are so excited about the progress. With the walls going up and the windows being framed in, it really is looking like a house.
JUST a GREAT VIDEO THANKS FOR SHARING ROSA OLBERA FROM COLUMBUS TEXAS
A LOVELY COUPLE DOING A GREAT JOB LOVE WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS PAUL FROM IRELAND
Hey guys, I have been building a 5m x 3m log cabin, a miniature version of yours! I have to say we have faced various issues like you. Now I am on the roof, that fear if heights thing has kicked in 😂. All the best from the UK.
That fear of heights gets me (Sara) all the time. I think I have it conquered and then all of a sudden, I'm on a ladder or scaffolding and it kicks in again. I can say, that it gets better as we progress through each project.
Thank you so much for watching.
Wonderful wonderful,, you both are doing a great job ,, and it appears still enjoying building your new home,, great fir you to get your children back with you, and see your parents ,, its looking great keep up the good work, AL BARR GLASGOW
Thank you so much watching. ❤️❤️
Cool interlocking structure!
Your both doing great.. I spent 12 yrs in Oregon, returned home 2 yrs ago, just in time we tell ourselves but I learnt that Oregonians can do anything. Keep up the great work..
Awwww! Thank you! We LOVED living in Oregon. I think Washington is the second best place. Although, it's a tad rainier here. I guess it's making us even tougher. Thank you so much for watching.
best of luck with the build.
Thank you!!
One log at a time. Doing great guys
YES! A little progress each day. Thank you for watching.
Good morning One Foot been waiting for a long while. Let's go build. Greetings from Jamaica 🇯🇲🙏
Good morning!! Thank you so much for watching. The build is getting good!!
I’ve just realized that this log home kit is very thin meaning the logs are quite thin...the insulation value wouldn’t be that great I would’ve thought they would’ve been thicker logs...I don’t know if there is going to be a inner wall that will be insulated if that’s the case I see why they’re thin......setting string lines from the beginning as a guide to being plumb and straight would’ve better for the walls that is,bracing is always a good idea it’s a must really...looking great guys hoping it’s dried in before winter...such beautiful children you have they looked so happy to be reunited with you guys...
There will be an inner wall and insulation in between the outer wall and the inner wall. Thank you so much for watching.
Coming along beautifully, wish these videos could be longer though 👍
Thank you for your feedback. How long would you like the videos to be?
Excellent build guys!!
Thank you.
@@OneFootOfftheGrid Is it possible to buy a kit from online, have builders come to put it together and let them know you already have everything. Or if they would have everything without a kit for you to buy, I would only trust builders to do this, also is there any maintenance requirements? I've heard all sorts of animals like cabins as much as we do so you want to keep them away lol
Install the bracing on the outside n it will free up the interior so you can ulltiltize the inside more efficiently
Lol. Yeah we leaned that the hard way. Next house we build we will know.
Great job you guys 👍👀
Thank you!!
Don't know if you remember I said in a previous comment, that using some brace template would help. It's going to be crucial especially where you have the opening of doors and windows.
It's like you could see into our future. The braces were so helpful, and you're right, they are especially helpful at the window and door openings. Thank you for your tips.
These vids come to an end way to quick. I could watch all day!!
Thank you for the compliment. How long do you think would be ideal?
Build a scaffold using the bracing...2x4s and 2x10s
Amazing work you two! Great teamwork. It's been a pleasure watching how excited the kids were.
I have always wondered about insulation, electrical, and plumbing without wall cavities. Any thoughts here?
We will actually have insulation, plumbing, and electrical . It will go between the log wall and a shiplap wall that you’ll see from the inside of the house.
THANKS FOR THE GOOD TIME
Glad you enjoyed the episode. Thanks for watching.
Looks great! You two are making great progress. Will u be able to move in this year? Best wishes.
That would be amazing! We’d love to move in by the summer of 2022, but with only 2 of us we’re not sure of we’ll hit that goal. There’s a lot to a house. 😂
Y'alls video popped up in my view list today! I find it funny because I am watching Doug and Wendy Up North(off grid) and they are building a cabin kit also!
They are a little bit further in the build but I think it would be advantageous for y'all to watch!? It looks great and I am now a sub! Keep smiling, it looks good on you! 👍 👋
We will check them out for sure!! Thanks for the recommendation. And thanks for watching us.
👌👌👌
I wouldn’t be surprised to see some 2X4s or 2X6s run vertically on the inside surfaces of those outside walls. That provides a place for insulation and utilities. Anyway, if it was my cabin, that’s what would happen.
Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
That’s the plan. 1 3/4” of insulation with a 3/4” void for electrical.
@@OneFootOfftheGrid ;-)
Ryan got a hair cut! Kids were so excited!
I always push it just a little too long. I was definitely due!
Why didn't you build and attach a jig to the floor, Level it, and then level the wall to the jig? Seems to be like it would speed things up.
First I would like to commend the both of you for taking on a super big project like you have.
LOL, I just heard the correction on plumb not level.
FYI, I’m retired now after being self employed carpenter for 35 years.
I saw you make a very dangerous error for a beginner with the skill saw! You showed us making a plunge cut without starting the cut with the front of the table on the work surface to aid in a non-kickback cut. Stay safe and seek professional help when you can afford it.
Thank you for your kind words. After that cut I realized there was a better way to plunge that was safer and more accurate. Thank you for the tip though and we appreciate you as a subscriber.
LOL, I had just said "plumb" then Ryan says it.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Did I miss how you will be insulating for cold winters?
There will be a layer of closed cell foam on the interior of the log wall.
Aw the cordless nail gun.
How are you planning on putting in the electrical /outlets ?
It will actually be wired just like a regular home. The log wall is the outside walk. Then we’ll have insulation, plumbing, and electrical. Over that will be a shiplap wall. You can go with out the insulation and the electrical outlets are pre-drilled through the logs then, but we wanted added insulation for sure!
Where did you purchase the kit?
I’d like to know this as well because we’ve bought land and are looking for something. TIA.
@@teapotrose2 They mentioned "Conestoga Log Cabins" around 12:00.
i don't see any outlets being bored into the walls so are you going to have electricity?
Good question. There will be an air gap between the outer wall and the inner wall where we will run wiring and insulation. In areas where insulation isn’t needed then the manufacturer Pte-cuts the electrical cutouts directly in the log wall.
😯👍👍👍👌
Where did you purchase your kit from?
Conestoga Log Cabins and Homes. I read it on their site.
Muscles getting toned? Pants getting a tad loose? Would kill for chocolate?
🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗💖💖💖💖💖👍👍👍👍👍
👏👍😊🇩🇪
I love the progress, but the videos too short. 😆🤣😂
Glad you like them. How long do you think they should be?
45mins at least, just saying, but I do enjoy every bit of it.
You need a hammer drill that drives those nails in ,love the cabin
I bought a palm bailer but the heads on those nails were too large.
13:52 supervisor?
Yep! We are hoping that we see him back again this Spring. It was so crazy that he just perched up on the top of the log walls.
well owl be damned, a new foreman
We (the kids) named the owl 🦉 Chad! He shows up quite regularly. SO COOL!!
cutting the window notch... use a 12 14' chainsaw
Good call. I didn't even think of doing that. I guess I'd be afraid that I wouldn't be able to be accurate enough.
So much taaaalking
Well . . . It is a vlog.
It's better to lengthen the work video and shorten the conversation. The explanation is too long.
When you plunge cut a circular saw , set the back down first & lower the front into wood . The way you were doing it was dangerous ! Please be safe !
Thank you for the tip. I actually started doing the plunge is later in the day this way after the Sol kicked and I knew there must be a safer way.
brit tv prog,, one foot in the grave ?????
I changed my plunge cut technique shortly after I completed that cut. Hopefully that show never gets made. LOL
