- Touring Area 419 for the second time! The last time we visited was over one year ago and I was inspired by what Jon Addis, Founder and CEO, was able to accomplish in their small garage shop. It was packed to the brim with Haas CNC lathes, CNC mills, and passion to provide high quality, precision rifle products.
Since then, Area 419 has grown and the story is incredible. Jon gives us a great tour--showing their DMG Mori, Grob CNC and Haas CNC machines. We'll also get to hear more about how Jon makes decisions in terms of allocating resources, buying machines, building reliable processes, and the experience of building their new shop.
Area 419 started with someone passionate about rifles but unable to afford sending them out for work. He picked up an old lathe and the rest is history! We can't wait to see what's in store for this amazing company!

I would be very happy working here, the owner 's attention to detail and the thought of employee moral earns him much respect. Many shop owners get stuck in the past and forget to modernize because they think it's stupid or unnecessary and wonder why nobody wants to work for them. Great video tour!

Before you buy a chip briqueter, try just rinsing your chips. We've been doing this on a smaller scale with pretty good results. A 55 gallon drum of "dry" chips will yield 5 gallons of coolant at ~7% concentration. A second five gallons comes out at about half that. Just dump clean water on the top of the barrel and your coolant can come out a hole in the bottom. The results vary with what your chips look like, basically the the yield goes up with smaller chips. This has cut our coolant consumption by roughly 1/3" and it didn't take any investment in machinery, plus it keeps all that coolant in our shop where we can use it and out of the scrap yard's dirt lot.

Wow! This is a great video.
That water system at the end of the video is amazing and cleanly set up/installed. That may sound silly to compliment AREA-419's water system, but water in the USA is something we all take for granted, and I once had a water issue, and was chewing up all sorts of things, including the plumbing itself, until I got a specialist or rather, a team of specialist's out where I am at. Have water too clean or pure, sound good, but, with out getting into covalent bonding, as if we are back in high school, too clean of water, is exceptionally rough on anything and everything the water is in contact with, even plastics type plumbing, let alone alloy type plumbing. So, if you are unsure, get educated, and or bring in a water testing group and get yours tested. A sprung leak in a copper pipe at Friday night at 8:30 PM after everybody has left for the day, only to return in two days on a Monday, to see that a bazillion gallons of water has filled the complex with a standing 3 inches of water. Please don't ask the cost of the water bill that following month. All from super clean water that demanded a few trillion trillion free electrons from from the copper piping.
On a more positive note, I will soon be ordering one of these presses. Not that I need another loading presses, but, these AREA-419 presses are just clever and of course, sexy. I need to figure out a way to convince the wife why 8 presses is not enough, or how this unit is different and more accurate then the others ,which it is, but, I don't think she cares, LOL.. Just kidding, I don't need permission to get one of these, just don't mention that I got one to her, and problem solved.... I think I can use the same ole rebuttal as always, where I mention, how many $2500 purses she needs or $1500 silly looking pairs of shoes she has in a walk in closet that only holds her shoes and purses, as if you are walking into a bank vault or the hidden control rooms at the Smithsonian's restoration lab.. All for stupid shoes and purses.. See, I am getting scared of my wife, that I am building up the game plan already of how to handle this ... LOL.. All jokes aside, I will soon be getting one of these presses. I so look forwards to using this model, I like how open it is. That doesn't mean the other types of presses are bad or not gonna get used, Nah, I just want one, is all.. Thank you for the time and effort put into making this video happen. AREA-419 makes allot of really neat stuff. You all should check out their website, even if you are not a reloader/loader, you never know, you may just decide, that the aluminum funnel will be fitting for something you are doing, not related to am mo reloading/loading among other items they manufacture in house. Thank you.

I think he had it for a short time time make the "prooven cuts" and then the machine goes somewhere else. As far as I remeber that was a machine moving between shops. You could see if from all the stickers it had :-)

The DMG's use a analog proximity which is monitoring a long triangle attached to the chuck drawbar or equivalent.

I am retired from 50 years of shop ownership. I find it interesting that the same weak link of the chain syndrome is still affecting how the shop runs. You go from tool wear to chip removal to part removal to temperature control and inspection. One of those will always be controlling production.

Impressive shop, looks to be some huge investments done, ten million+. Looking at their webshop and products I at first glance can't figure out how those relative few and small products can defend the investments, but they must sell a large numbers of each item, and/or they might do general custom jobs not shown in the video. I do not doubt the gentleman is fully on top of things. Impressive being able setting up such a shop in the US today, with all the competition from overseas/Asia. Interesting tour, well done, best of luck.

Man have we come a long way in production machining with tool deflection being the biggest, baddest problem possible in 1968. I remember when they used a Fosdick tape NC to check the work of Pratt and Whitney Tape-O-Matics three axis drilling machines in an aircraft tooling shop. Just kids being kids back then. One hold-down clamp in the way of the tool and wiping the table clean. The 1959-60 technology was nothing compared to today. In those days the tape operated machines were little more than manual machines without the accuracy of trough mikes to measure distances and no where near accurate with the tape breaking and getting wet with coolant. The Fosdicks were guaranteed 0.0001 end of table to end of table, but who was the judge if the tolerance was met. LOL!

Amazing tour! The thing that blows my mind away is that people are buying these products, like, I guess I just don't get it but just loading ammunition has helped finance all this stuff. Great success story! It would have been nice to see what these products do, for people like myself it isn't totally clear or obvious what these things do.
What do you mean by “see what these products do?” Do you mean the machines or the parts they’re making?
@@yianni3251 Seems obvious he is talking about the products they're making, i.e the zero. I had the same question and found it well answered by looking at their website and youtube channel. Wild guess, the zero might bring in around 20 million in revenue, that's only 16,667 units.
Late to the table here, but the discussion of the DT-1 at 55:43 was hugely insightful. Acceleration isn't one of the headline specs for a machine tool, but it clearly has a huge impact on cycle times. Got me thinking about why Fanuc Robodrill owners seem to keep buying them again and again.
your zero press is a work of art. wow.
Thats a very impressive shop. We have an NLX in our shop too, for the type of production you I wouldn't recommend thise though. They are very slow in production compared to say a nakamura or Okuma, and you don't loose any rigidity or accuracy with thise two machines compared to the NLX's just as an example we had a job that we ran on our Mori and Okuma at the same time, we used the exact same tooling feed rates and everything, the Mori was 1:20 and our Okuma was 0:56 that really adds up over time.
Love the shop tours keep up the great work . do kind of wish the camera man would zoom in sometime on certain things more. but that just a very small constructive criticism. could just be me though to.
