Just an FYI guys, the quoted $4000 isnt just the rebuild cost only. Thats the labor to remove all 11 cylinders, send them off for rebuild, and reinstall when done. Also fluids, calibration, and sales tax.
Some people are thinking I quoted $4000 for the rebuilds only. It is not. It is the full start to finish cost. Re-watch the video.
That's less than $400 a cylinder. I don't find that unreasonable for removal, refurbish, and reinstallation. My dad had a fleet of forklifts to manage before he retired. He had many cylinders rebuilt and they were $250-$300 and that was with him dropping them off after he took them off the machine.
You better pay that dude his weight in gold lol.
As soon as you mentioned $4,000 is sitting over on the table, my immediate thought was, "must be the top hydraulics."
And yeah, $4,000 all in to do the eleven cylinders really isn't unreasonable. If you're going to own cars like this, you have to be prepared. Hopefully now the owner can look forward to 20 more years of top-down summers.
Why's this even an issue? To begin with, even charity shops have bills to pay and can't stay open otherwise. Moreover, if both sides understand what's involved (as I'm sure they do here), what entitles anyone else to moan about it? Although I know nothing about cars, $4k seems pretty low for the skills, knowledge and manual labour involved in what I've just seen with my own eyes.
I'm guessing wizard needs money to finish his yacht any hired a young smart man that has the skills Mercedes expertise to rip people off isn't that true wizard I promise you after this it's going to be kind of a coincidence that the wizard is going to own more Mercedes after this ladies and gentlemen if you're reading this the r129 in the R2 30s are super Collectibles right now they're worth every penny just don't go to this guy that rips you off the cause himself the wizard more like the Ripper offer
The amount of talent in the Wichita area, because of the aircraft and aerospace industry is noteworthy.
Having watched Tyler working in 100% Jake videos I'm sure him working with you at Omega is going to be a great asset. Sometimes 100% Jake videos are 99% Tyler videos :)
😂 true
Maybe he should rebrand as 1% Jake.
I'm thrilled to see Tyler Grimes as an Omega tech, and as a bonus he is already comfortable in front of a camera. This is a win, win, win, win for everybody and the channel.
Wow 100 percent Jake is so much better than fat old Wizard. I’m unsubscribing from this channel and going to Jakes
Let’s hope Hoovie doesn’t scare the new guy away 😂
The plot twist is that he is hoovies biggest fan.
Can’t scare the scary guy. 😂
after his 27th hoovie project he will run
Did he scare magic Mike off ?
Hoovie has a massive dick by all accounts, so I hope that he doesn't frighten him that way, but I reckon everything will be just okay 👍❤
Hey I know that guy
🤔
Great opportunity for him to utilize all his skills at Omega! How much do you want for the Cruiser? IT DID beat Hoovies Chevy panel van for those who may be interested...
@@cousinjohncarstuff4568I think 7k was the number. Come get it before I have to work on it again
@@GrimesGarage Congrats Tyler. I'm pumped to see you on the channel.
😊😊😊😊
SUPER glad you're giving someone that has troubleshooting skills a shot / experience. It's a lost art that is SUPER valuable and OFTEN disregarded.
Tyler is a pretty good guy who took some time to talk to me during my visit to the wizard.
Oh no, 100% Jake will never finish anything now without grimes 😂

Grimes looks like a great guy! Mr Wizard you have to keep this guy!! 🙏🏼💚💚💚🇨🇦
Nice to see you on Car Wizard's channel Tyler !
Welcome, Grimes! I have a 1998 SLK that still has a working hard convertible top. Fingers crossed.
Soon as I saw the title I knew exactly what two bolts you are going after. Been there many a times. Lol. One of the very few in my area that will touch these older SL'S.
Like the Wizard says" "If you can't afford a new Mercedes, you can't afford a USED Mercede$!"
It was enough to just hear him start talking about the mercedes to know Wizard just hired a star!
Yes great camera presence.
I,would have gone bananas after 10 minutes dealing with this problem and smashed this old junk mercedes with a piece of steel pipe so the owner would not be able to recognice it when he came to pick it up.
Welcome Mr. Grimes! Thank you two for your service!!!
Wow!!! Great to see how only the very finest and smartest p/p are with the Wizzard! U guys are the Best!!!
LOVE GRIMES!! So educated and great video presence! MOre Grimes! Thanks for your service.
I’m about 4 1/2 hours south of y’all, but if I’m ever in that area and start having car problems, I know exactly where I’ll be going. Good, honest mechanics are hard to find, and I’ve watched enough videos on this channel to know that I could trust the work y’all do
I joined the Army when the Gen Mech was a 52D. We were called the "52 Do It Alls". Now it is a 91D-o it alls.
I joined shortly before that change, and before they consolidated to fort Lee.
@tylergrimes1256 Yes, I went to Aberdeen for AIT and Lee for BNCOC.
I did everyone else's job plus mine, but the wheel mechs never wanted to work on work on the gen sets. 🤣🤣🤣
Dang, Mr. and Mrs. Wizard! Gettin' close to a million! Congratulations! ✌️❤️🙂🇨🇦
Good hire. I’ve seen him many times on Jakes channel
Good luck with your new mechanic! Wizard!
Welcome Grimes! Congratulations on getting the job at omega! I have been watching you for years on the 100% Jake channel. I'm one of Jake's all time top fans. I really think that as you're on camera skills grow you're going to be a very entertaining and valued part of the crew. Great choice Wizard!
Nice to see an electronic nerd in the shop, esp with how many ECUs and such are in modern cars. Smart hire, Wizard! Extra points for how good Grimes is on the camera.
Much luck to everyone involved!
Woo Hoo! Congratulations Tyler! (and 100percentJake)
Hell yeah...Vets helping Vets...🤘🇺🇸💯
I was hoping it would be him. I have seen him do some great work on 100 Percent Jake's channel along with his Tik Tok videos. Best of luck to you Tyler.
love this. guy seen him. a lot with Jake a good asset for you
Every thing you talk about is SPOT ON! Just had ALL 12-13 cylinders pulled rebuilt ..3.9K OUCH! Get it home and the BOW micro switch goes out and top would not work. The switch got bent during the rebuild process and YES it prevents the entire top from working! This I fixed myself by watch CZcams videos.
I like this kid Grimes. Smart as a whip and clearly well-equipped to deal with Hoovie’s next mistake.
Grimes is a great addition, always liked watching his work on 100PercentJake. Good move Mr. Wizard.
This is why I love OBD1 rides. A majority of the time most of the bolts are easy to reach. You may need to remove 3 or 4 things and make a specialty tool with some high end cars. But even they are not crazy complicated. Also a fan of running manual tops or converting hydraulic to electric tops. Lots of limit switches and a bit of screwing around with timing. But never have a issue where your covered in fluid.
Wow that is a lot of work to fix that top. There should be a manual kit to make it a manual top…
Welcome Grimes to one of the best channels on utube. 😁
Love your camera presence and easy flow of information pertaining to the disassembly of the top mechanism.
Looking forward to the dust buster van.
Seen him in Jake's videos and he seems like a great guy to have around! Congrats to you both!
Oh I love this dude, he was like, yeah. Not that name. I like this dude already lol
Two things: 1 -- thanks for the 100PercentJake channel shoutout. He's my favorite automotive CZcamsr because he best reflects my experience as a DIYer, and in my opinion he should have multiples more subscribers than he does. Your mention will really help. Lately, Tyler G has been a huge part of the channel. 2. Let Grimes be sardonic, deadpan and sarcastic on camera, which is where he really shines. I know that kind of fits the vibe of Jake's channel better than yours, but having him heard as a voiceover while pointing out what's going on and making a couple of jokes is really where he shines
That string bean is a walking extension 🤣 I swear this is the only answer for shops to be able to reach that one last bolt
Welcome Dave will keep you busy and enpart a lot of good knowledge to u
Thanks Wizard! Had a MBZ convertible...
won't be making that mistake again.
Wiry guys have an easier time getting into tight spaces. ( I have some beefy arms and hands :P ) Grimes seems to be a perfect fit for Omega. Knowledgeable and well rounded experience.
Perfect for theivin
Welcome Grimes. I hope Wizard will do a video on the Dustbuster :)
This was a pleasant surprise! Tyler is the best!
good luck Tyler! look forward to the upcoming rebuilds!
Wow this guy is the real life jesse from fast and furious thats really impressive stuff
Thank you David, great video.
I'm an SLK owner in the UK.Its a 2015 car with a diesel engine. At the moment the top works perfectly, (knock on wood) !!
Congratulations on 900 k subscribers 🎉🎉
You'll get to a million pretty easily and I'm excited to see it!
Welcome Grimes!
Nice to welcome Grimes !
Car wizard is the Dr. Phil of the automotive world.
New mechanic looks and sounds great. We Like him!
There's a tenuous and obscure Simpsons reference here if we end up calling him Grimey.
frank
@@bossbuick8615 Change the channel, Marge!
You're a Wizard Homer.
Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the balllllll. So what's new Grimey?
@@Pete_Finch Simpson, you've got a five-thirteen!
When the 300/500/600 SL's came out in about '92, I remember reading that that tiny little canvas top used 18 hydraulic cylinders! Hell, the giant Ford Skyliner retractable hardtop didn't use that many. ALMOST, bought Allante instead...
Tyler Is the best ! He’s cool as hell.
Hah, I’m a Grimes too. Do us proud Tyler
Good luck to you, Grimes and welcome
congratulation on new hire, Grimes looks super good man!!
Brilliant stuff brother 👏🏼 👍👍👍
Welcome Tyler, nice work
And a added extra bonus with Grimey , he does BMW's ! Wizard , did you here that !
Love when you have an R129 on the channel Wizard.
A classic example of the counter-productiveness of too much tech' in vehicles. Might be good news for mechanics/shops who repair them, but not so much for vehicle owners. Give me a manually operated soft-top any day. Used to take me about 30 seconds to put the top up or down on my old MG.
An excellent diagnostician is a must for any complex repairs !
This is why its handy to have a little bean pole working in the shop that can get into tight spots.
Grimes is awesome- these kinds of people are very hard to find. They usually have extensive experience. Great hire.
Glad I own a Miata. Regular oil/ filter changes, all I've had to do in 140K. OK, tires, brakes and coolant flush. Normal wear stuff.
Grimes looks like and talks like he knows what he’s talking about!!! great addition I enjoyed this video!
I fucks with Tyler and 100PercentJake. Good hire. 👍🏿
Great show guys
19d here. We loved you guys
The latch cylinders are so easy to rebuild, I had a repair kit shipped from US to Poland for $5 total and It took me like 10 minutes with disassembly and assembly on a A208 CLK top cover. The same cylinders were used in many Mercedes convertibles.
Jakes boy! This guy is damn good.
WELCOME TO OMEGA SIR GRIMES 😊 🎉
I like new guys hat 😂👍
Well done, Mr.G.
Interesting. I am an Army veteran, but I went the opposite route. Was Audi-VW tech before Army, became IT in the army, went back to car tech after the army and in 2012 went back to IT. Love to work on cars but it became physical difficult for me to do it.
He has the Wizard staredown. This guy is going places :D
Good for Tyler!🎉
Hi Wizard @ 11:54 it might not be the secondary valve cover leaking down the side but perhaps the actual oil cap leaking making it look like the valve cover is leaking.
It was the VCG, and the m113 are notorious for the crankcase vent chambers leaking when the sealant degrades
@@GrimesGarage cool.
Thanks wizard
l like the new guy.....Thanks Wizard 👍
My first car was a convertible. A 1963 Chevy II Nova SS. It had a manual top. Two windshield latches, a rear window zipper and two metal clips to hold the retracted top in place. Simple Simon. Nothing like this Mercedes.
Another addition to the squirrel factory. Wonder how long this one will last !
Good onya Grimey from Australia
Mr. Grimes kinda has a nice sound to it
I second that, Mr. Grimes.
Good hire!
I have a 98 SL500 and I’m so glad I did all the cylinders at the same time. The amount of disassembly is wild. It’s been almost 3 years since, and they’re working like clockwork. Couldn’t love this car more!!!
M1 mechanic here. Good luck new guy.
I was a Bradley mech. But did service a few M1’s
Car wizard almost at 1mil!!!!! Cmonnnnnn
Welcome aboard new guy.
Call the new guy "The G Man".
Really cool guy!
Grimes sounds like Rick Grimes from TWD 🤠
Now the song “Carl Poppa” by Bad Lip Reading is going through my head!
Hey! They could call him Carl Poppa!
Yay new guy!!
All right a familiar face ! You got Grimey on your side ! 😂😂😂😂
Grimey! Damn this has Simpsons written all over it! Grimes' kid was a mechanic!!!
should have a blog etc for a shopping list for people that are at Upicks and come across cars that might have new stuff on it.
