FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO KNOW MORE-
In 2005, Taylor was spotted in a public restaurant by Scott Borcheta who wanted to start his record label as he was going broke and Taylor being a girl who knew how to play a guitar and a young girl seemed like a big oppurtunity to him. He met her parents and decided to teach Taylor more about country music and proposed the idea of founding a record label called 'Big Machine Records' whose first investor was Taylor's dad and Taylor was the first artist to sign the contract under which until she became famous and brought the label profit, her catalogue will be with Big Machine. 15 year old Taylor wanted her dreams to come true and hoped to gain her work when she was famous.. Scott was like Taylor's uncle and she always praised him everywhere. Big Machine was becoming one of the biggest record labels until 2015 only with ONE ARTIST. Over the years, Taylor kept asking Scott about her work and when could she own them and he always asked her not to worry about them and instead focus on her next album(he was trying to delay the event as much as possible, as he'd never expected that Taylor would bring so much profit to the label, and the more time he owned the albums, the more money they were making). In 2018, she asked him for the last time but when Scott denied she left the label and signed with Republic. She thought that Scott would give back her work now that she's no longer with them as per the deal but he played smart and sold Big Machine to Scooter Braun's Ithica Holdings. Scooter Braun who was JB, Ariana and many other artist's manager had bullied Taylor in 2016 during the K*nye debacle and was a close friend of West. Taylor had discussed about this with Scott many times and how she never wanted to meet him again but her fears came true and her masters were sold. She publicly talked about in the media and Braun was always lying about it saying 'she had a chance to negotiate' which wasn't true at all as revealed by him later in 2022 that he 'wished the Taylor situation had been handled nicely'. Now, Taylor's happily recording all of her work again and as fans/ casual listeners we should support her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is it slimy to sell something you own? Taylor signed a contract with Scott because he was obviously doing something useful that she couldn't do on her own and she needed his help to get to where she is today. His rights to the music is how he got paid for his services. Obviously Taylor didn't want to pay what the rights were worth, or I'm sure he would have sold her the rights. I am GLAD Taylor Swift refused to back down to Scooter Braun. He IS a BULLY and he IS pathetic. He clearly thought he could use his money and power to bully, not just a younger woman, but a young artist to become an even bigger man. He was and IS greedy. I thank the narrator for wording this story so honestly. While people think Swifties only support Taylor unconditionally, it was also a matter of simple right and wrong. I still remember the news of Scooter buying BMR along with her masters and then refusing to sell it to her under the condition she signed an NDA. I remember thinking that he was trying to shut her up. That seemed so wrong to me. The funny thing about karma is that it always comes around. Taylor Swift is currently the biggest name and she holds more love, more value, more power, and more success than Scooter as well as those who bullied her (Kim, Kanye, Justin, etc) ever could.

And Braun REALLY picked the wrong artist to eff with in Taylor. His expected ROI from Taylor’s masters… he made bank no doubt, but not like he would’ve had there been no re-recorded Taylor’s versions. And in the end and through struggles, HER reputation shines so brightly you can see it from space, while Scooter Braun’s is like a turd in the punchbowl. Checkmate, Ms Swift.

Blatant gaslighting and manipulation. Why AFTER the deal is done? Because he can't spare 5 minutes to call Taylor or her representative, to discuss the deal before hand? His intention is super clear. He thinks she is stupid because she didn't make a big deal out of it for several years with her old record label. She is someone who should have ownership to the songs she wrote in the first place but these money hungry men preyed on a younger woman's desperation.

Plus, when they informed shareholders, and Taylor's father, of the deal with Scooter Braun, it was too late to do anything. Deals like that take weeks to months to finalize. Borchetta tried to make his statement sound like she was the liar, but he didn't do a good job for people who know a little bit more, and I'm not even a swiftie. LOL

We do not know if Scooter made an offer and the details of any offer. I would assume the terms were not acceptable to Taylor. I heard that one of conditions of Scooter selling the studio was he would get some residuals off the music catalog. So even if Taylor bought her masters from the new company, Scooter would still get money. Given their history, I do not feel she would find that acceptable.
Scott Borchetta said he made an offer before selling to Scooter; Taylor claims the offer was she could "earn" a master for every new record she made for Big Machine. Basically Big Machine was locking her into a new 6 record deal just to get her masters back instead of an outright sale. Both men should have realized they were not in a power position and simply sold the masters to her. Her current moves made the masters essentially worthless over time.

Of course they both benefited from each especially at the beginning, she needed a recording studio to record, to distribute and to promote her music and Big Machine needed artists but since Big Machine was just launched and they didn't have so much profit back then, they weren't able to promote her out of Nashville so Taylor Swift in her early years marketed her work via social media and promoted her music by performing in bars, nightclubs & then stadiums. With the years go by, she releases a new successful album that beats the one before and by 2014 she wanted to switch to POP which Big Machine completely OPPOSED and THEY NEVER SUPPORTED her transition in music, but guess what happen next?! Her 1st POP album "1989" was THE SUCCESS itself.
As I said earlier that both Taylor & Big Machine both benefited from each other but they benefited from her more than she did form them because and to be frank, she was meant to be very successful whether she worked with Big Machine or any other recording studio but they were lucky by finding and having her with them. Big Machine was estimated to be worth 300 million dollar with Swift's Catalog valued at 140 million dollar so she was responsible for almost half of the company's value and in 2015 Big Machine became one of the biggest record labels with ONLY ONE FUCKING ARTIST (can you imagine?!).
Over the years, Taylor wanted so hard to own HER MUSIC and Scott Borchetta (the founder and executive of Big Machine) told her to never worry about them and assured her that she'll be given her masters. He tried so hard to delay that as much as possible because the more they hold Taylor's albums' masters the more money they make and that's the 1st betray coming from Scott.
In 2018, Taylor's contract with Big Machine was over and she opted to not resign with the company which obviously her right. Then they offered her to be having one of her origianl album for every new album she makes which she rejected ofc. Big Machine was not thrilled with her decision so they refused to let her use her songs on TV and blocking her from using her recordings. Then Scott sold Big Machine to Scooter Braun who bullied Taylor Swift for years and that's Scott 2nd Betray here.
Again, Taylor Swift tried to buy her music from Big Machine but Braun refused to sell them at any price. He wanted her to sign NDA muzzling her right to talk about him as condition of negotiation which proves how dirty, sneaky and immoral his actions are (if he knew himself as a good executive and a good manager, he wouldn't make such condition in the 1st place) to which she refused ofc. 17 months after Scooter Braun purchased Big Machine, he sold the master of Swift's albums to a private investment fund without reaching to Taylor Swift at all. They really wanted to control her as they like not to mention that Scooter Braun once shared a story saying "Bought Taylor Swift...".
But who are they playing with?! Taylor is much bigger than they're. Since she's the one who's writing and composing her own songs, she owns the publishing right over all of her albums including the original ones. She declined all the requests to use her songs from her 1st six albums in movies, TV shows & commercials... so they wouldn't make a profit out of her work and announced that she's going to re-record her 1st six albums since the lyrics, composition and everything related to her songs were mostly done by her.
Taylor Swift said: "Scott Borchetta told my team that they'll allow me to use my music only if I do these things: If I agree to not re-record copycat versions of my songs next year (which is something I'm both legally allowed to do and looking forward to) and also told my team to stop talking about him and Scooter Braun."
Guess what happened next?! She is re-recording her albums and the new versions are far superior, Taylor's voice sounds much better, the sound is better and the re-recordings became greater versions of the original ones. She even added new songs to one of her album and added some lyrics to her song "All Too Well" which became an even more incredible song, you guys need to hear that.
How does that impact the original masters?! Well it reduce their values to the point where it no longer has a value at some points since fans are buying the new versions not to mention that it also went to number 1 on billboard charts and any company that wants to use any of Taylor's songs can work directly with Taylor and she'll be letting them use these new versions of the songs and cuts off income to the firm that owns the original ones.
Taylor Swift, Scott Borchetta & Scooter Braun are all rich, capable and they are all successful in business but do you wonder why did Scott & Scooter got beat in their own game despite having all this power and money?! Because they lack the most important thing that made Taylor the way she is. Which is the talent, the creativity and making the art. They are just some random, lucky & vicious guys who bet on a teenager and a kid to become they way they have become. One did bet on Taylor Swift and the other did bet on Justin Bieber.
Btw, I wouldn't have know any of these two men if I didn't know about their feud with Taylor lol.
SWIFT, smooth & clean way to go Tay Tay! ♥

I am hoping that once Taylor puts out all of her versions of her albums, that whoever owns her original masters realize how much money they stand to lose and sell them to the one person who wants them more than anyone else . . . Taylor herself. I predict that she will eventually own her original masters. It might take several years, but I do believe that eventually she will get her chance to own them. @rosanaconta3416 I don't know who you're replying to because I never said "stolen" in any of my comments. Taylor signed a contract for a number of years. When it was time to renew it, she was a bigger artist and wanted more, plus the priority to buy her own masters. She moved on and, according to industry experts, went from 10-15% of the proceeds with Big Machine, to at least 50% with Universal. Big Machine would have allowed her to buy her masters only if they could tie her up for another 7 years, 1 new album for every old master. She said no and decided to re-record everything, which made the value of her old masters go down. On top of that, she raised awareness to other artists. She's changing the industry because she chose not to submit herself to the old business model. The fact that her father was a stock market broker and had 3% on Big Machine means nothing.

Just a little information how Taylor got the idea to re-record her early stuff…through…Def Leppard. Taylor music manager under her 13 Management is Robert Allen and he is Def Leppard drummer’s brother Rick Allen. Anyways, Def Leppard like Taylor got a record deal when they were just teenagers 15-17-18-19. Def Leppard had issues with their record label on how their music should be used commercially and the amount they deserve for streaming. Def Leppard wanted control of their music…just…like Taylor wanted also. So, what did the band do they re-recorded all their big hits. At age around 40 years old singer Joe Elliott can’t belt out those screamer notes of their early stuff …therefore…that was off the list and the band stick with re-recording the hits instead…so…Robert Allen got this idea of Taylor re-recording her music from Def Leppard…only thing…Taylor and her team knew how to market it with Easter eggs, limited edition, additional new songs, and a few new lines of the lyric rewritten, etc. I wish people would acknowledge that it was through Def Leppard were it started.

I completely agree that in a perfect world, if an artist creates something, they should, of course, own it for imperpituity. But unfortunately, that isn't the case here at all.
Taylor signed a record deal with Big Machine Records, deal expired, she decided to go to Republic Records. As part of her original record deal, which she signed, Big Machine owns the masters, and since it is their property, they can do with it as they please (very common in the music world).
Apparently, she tried to purchase the masters from Big Machine - they chose not to sell them to her (again, per contract thar she signed, it is their right as it is their property).
When she found out that Big Machine got sold to Scooter Braun, with whom she had previous significant "disagreements," she got angry, it appears that she thought bc of her major stardom (no denying it) that there should be exemptions made to the contract she signed with Big Machine (prior to the sale).
Due to her lashing out in the media and previous history with Scooter Braun, the guy decided to be an ass (as is his right, since he bought the company and its assets, including Taylor's masters - which now are his property), and not offer any common ground to which either party could agree.
I applaud Taylor for using her fan base and her grasp on the media to win the case in the court of public opinion. But at the end of the day, no deal, she was forced to go re-record her songs.
Eventually, this will just be a footnote in her amazing career. But, it reminds us all that, in the professional world, try not to burn bridges...any bridges...even if you are 100% correct, find a way to end the interaction / relationship with at least a modicum of mutual understanding / compromise (even if it's fake), bc that person you hate today could be the person from whom you need a favor tomorrow.

Yes I understand and it's unfortunate that they could not come to an agreement. But the record company put their foot in their mouth when they tried to tell her she could not sing her original songs. What were they thinking? I hope because of Taylor's determination it brings awareness to the up and coming artists who write their own material. I also hope that in the big scheme of things the record companies will actually acknowledge the artists for their talent and allow them to buy back their masters.

@@joeg8269stolen? Taylor signed a contract, where her father (rich banker) was also a partner in the record company. She knew very well what would happen and she never stopped getting paid for them. She probably wanted to have control of everything but it's very difficult to break contracts (as her father must know)

@rosanneanselmo yeah that's why there has been a movement for artists to self-publish their work vice signing to a record label...ensures that they can always keep ownership of their work.

@@joeg8269yeah, atleast make it mandatory in a contract that artists can buy/own their masters if they want to.

Yeah of course he regrets how he handled everything. Not because he offended Taylor, but because his "investment" is basically worthless. No one is gonna touch that, it's dealing business in bad faith and I hope it puts Big Machine out of business.

Actually negative things have been posted about Danny Elfman for example. He has been accused of sexual harassment without proof by a washed-up piano prodigy named Nomi Abadi who has a history of lying about such things (I met her former manager on Instagram).
