I picked up your channel recently while researching before pulling the trigger on a Gmrs for my Jeep. I have to watch your videos 2-3 times to get the info, the first watch I’m laughing my ass off in appreciation of your masterful subtle, smart ass, deadpan skills. You give great info that’s easy to digest especially for the people who just need a casual radio and don’t need to know the salinity of the ground to push their signal over the curvature of the earth. You’ve cleared up some things that I never really understood from my rf engineering classes in college. If you are ever near St. Louis MO, I’ll buy you a beer.

My KSUN came in today, it's definately going to be a game changer for me at work. I live in North Texas, only licensed HAM and active NOAA SKYWARN storm spotter at my job, none of my Baofengs can pick up the local ARES repeater inside the plant I work in. This radio will eliminate that problem. Rule of thumb with adverse weather such as tornados... there's as much as 5 minutes from the time a tornado is spotted by a storm spotter before alerts are sent out on NOAA radio and cell phone alerts.

I like it. I can see use cases for it. Sometimes form factor is key for the best use. Sure, you CAN use Zello on your phone, But this form factor seems more natural for the service. It's the same reason why I use a compact digital camera with an OPTICAL viewfinder. Yeah, My phone has a nice camera, however I cannot hold it as steady and compose a shot as naturally as I can with an actual camera on my face! A "walkie-talkie" app with the form factor of a walkie-talkie is a great idea.

Randy I just want to mention that this is the first network radio I purchased because of its price. It worked flawlessly on WiFi but after inserting a SIM card the radio did not connect. After hours of research I discovered that all KSUN IMEI numbers are blacklisted by all US cell carriers. I don't know if this is still the case but I don't see how that could have changed. Just a caveat for potential buyers.

These still seem to be better used for commercial applications, like cab drivers, hotel / resort staff, job site and factory workers. People who need clear audio, at the push of a button, NOT dialing a phone. Even eldery people, to call relatives, or for help! (Because my father does NOT want a cell phone!)
Fun fact: The Ga. State Patrol tried something similar, 30 years ago, but it never worked good enough. We still have many areas of our state with dead cell phone service! So they dumped it, and later went digital, VHF radios!

We use these for work purposes. They have the advantage of being always "on" Zello, the batteries last forever (I easily get a week out of this particular radio, even more on my TE390), they tend to be more rugged (I have dropped this radio many times with only a few nicks), they are better weather resistant. But most importantly they keep your employees from playing Genshin on it or using it to chat with your mistress.
Obviously RF is still the go-to for critical comms, but deployable wifi mesh and LTE networks are on the rise, so this may change for some.

  • @billelkins994
    @billelkins994 Před rokem +1

I have two of these. I use them to keep in touch with my sisters. As we are all old people calling out "I've fallen and I can't get up" is much easier than dialing a cellphone. Also my state has cellphone laws about driving and touching a cellphone. Two way radios are ok. Sort of an inter-resident intercom. The ones I have don't switch from wifi to the sim card reliably so I always use the sim card. The sim cards are from eiotclub and provide 720 MEGAbytes of data. Sim cost is $50 US and has a two year life. I don't think they sell that anymore. They do have 360 MEGAbytes 360 day for $27 US.
Do not use for time critical events. Telling the backing up cement truck operator "Stop! Stop! Stop!" May not be heard for a few seconds or a minute, possibly never.

I'm curious how well the radios will work on the cellular network, via the Data SIM Card? If Zello allows 'talk groups', without a repeater, one could in theory have a digital talk group, via Zello, with a cellular data connection. Reminds me of the Nextel PTT Feature. Depending if Zello allows semi-private groups on their network, I see many possibilities for these radios. Thanks for sharing! :)

Well, it is a kind of niche thing. It is more convenient in some cases, i bet your loving it for your repeater there. Our GMRS repeater for our group isn't on Zello, and i am pretty sure the owner would not want to put it on there and make that public as we have enough problems as it is with local sad ham jammers.
I could see it as a help to our local jamming problems possibly, but i don't know anything about setting up a repeater on Zello and if a repeater can be on Zello with access into it controlled and private, If it can, that would be a godsend to those in our group that cannot get over the jammers on our nets and so forth which is relentless. We have also recently had a member or two move out of state, and some that go out of town for weeks at a time once in a while, and Zello would allow them to still play radio with us. And we do miss our friends.
I will have to look into Zello. But i can see the usefulness of this device.
Thank you mighty Prince of Xenu! 😀

hello, can you help me with a recommendation for a walkie talkie model 4g vhf uhf multiband? and something else, is it worth buying something like this multiband or should it be 4g digital and that's it.

  • @JimNicholsMotorManiaGarage

Great video as always. Would you consider making a video on how you interfaced zello with your our repeater?
    Thank you!!

Looking for a good walkie talkie for my wife and I for emergency reasons or if we lose cell service. Is it a good idea to get a GMRS Certification and a GMRS RADIO? PLEASE HELP....

thank goodness for that Vysor program.. this damn thing wanted me to toss it up a wall! As randy said, be sure you have a data cable, not a charging cable only. Other then the small as LCD screen, works fairly well.. atleast on WIFI here.

OK, so I've seen a bunch of these SIM radios that use the 4G network (if your sim allows it, or else it would need wifi). And, though it'll be completely useless in an emergency, well it does have both 4G and wifi... And some of them, like this, has a removable antenna, which means you can hook it up to a yagi and get pretty good range... So... is it possible to use this as a very long range mobile hotspot? Or say, my camper is basically a faraday cage, can I run a cable out to a yagi and get wifi inside? And what connector is it using for the antenna? Is it sma or proprietary?

Have you ever considered hand modeling??
I believe you are tops…. in both Sad Ham & non-Sad Ham Spectrums.
    p.s. --
I caved to the SadHammers & bought a “Purest” BAOFENG GT -5R instead of the handy dandy UV-5R.
Confession is good for the soul. Each time while watching your vids, found myself covering my eyes and looking down and shame.

Thanks for the video! Love this channel. I got one of these, how were you able to change the time? Using Vysor (on a Mac), all I can see is a mirror of the device, no additional functionalities. What am I missing?

You have to pull-down from the top or something, using the mouse, to get into the settings - Its an Android thing

I just saw this on Amazon they have a duel sim version as well probably for overseas. Anyway I have a question. When Chris was doing the ZELLO test did he do that test off the phone? or was this using that Handset. I would like to know how the handset sounds on regular radios maybe you can do a jeep adventure with this in the future?

I’m hoping my question (or two or three) aren’t “stupid comments.”! 1) Does this work with Zello@Work? and 2) Does the “radio” have GPS and does it pass this information into Zello? 3) If it has GPS, can you turn the GPS reporting on and off? Thanks in advance if you know any of these answers. I’ll try and chase down anything you don’t know. Thanks also for mentioning this radio.

    Question:
If you had to do it all again, would you chain HTs for a repeater, or just buy a legit repeater?
