This was amazing, I love her so much - she is so genuine, the way she carries herself, so different from most women, one of a kind. Incredible interview
Loved this interview and podcast!!! Evy is a badass and I love it- she is such an inspiration and role model- I am 63 and strive to be more like her as I age!!!!
Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain(dune). - 1:32:40 I got my ass on a plane.
As a clinical psychologist, I am really impressed. She has an amazing self-care philosophy, and uses communication to keep her boundaries. This is extremely important not just in her career, but in life every day.
@@rhondabowlin1883 You want her to keep validating people's victimhood because that is what today's society wants. "Your emotions are valid" - so stay there and dwell on it?" This is not going to end well for a lot of people. That is why the West is getting more and more depressed, especially women, because you're cheering on each other to see who is the bigger victim. It's like a victim Olympics on social media! No people, you got hurt, you suffered and yes it hurts and you are entitled to feel bad but after that, start looking forward. Don't freaking stay there!!
Honestly, after watching this video, i went to a job interview and when I was asked questions about resolving conflict this video popped into my head out of the blue and I used her idea of how to resolve conflict in the interview and the interviewee was really impressed and I got the job. Thanks Evy, you're a legend.
Agree wholeheartedly about the value of this podcast. So much of my experience would be different if I granted more grace, as she does, to sidestep biases and assumptions. To allocate energy to a more productive mindset.

My kids are all about performance. Its rad!! Im proud of my life decisions and so proud of my strong children. Anyone can do it. It is all about choices. Great convo. I very much related to it.
@reptilesgamers00 a lot of single moms WFH or have a job (often cleaning) that allows them to bring their kids with them. Homeschooling only takes a few hours a day for CORE subjects. Kids can knock it out in a single morning, afternoon, or evening. They can bring their school with them. Homeschooling curricula like Easy Peasy are completely free so even financing a home education isn't a problem.
" If you are not comfortable dropping your kid in the middle of Times Square to talk to whoever, then you get that thing(cell phone) out of her hands". So true!!👍

Well, appearances in general don't have to do anything with personality...until it comes to plastic surgery. Since that's a sign for me that the person doesn't want to see their bad sides or thinks of covering them up for some gains. (that's how I perceive it) But I'm not sure if she had it, since I'm more listening to it than looking this. But there is a thing that I don't get from daphnefaetv's comment. Why do you perceive her as selfless, if she said don't let other people's (shit) chaos invade your personal space and distance yourselves from them. (Even though it was said, it's only partial) Since that wouldn't be my interpretation of selfless.
i didn’t even notice I watched this 2-hr long interview… she’s such a woman of life and words. Taken notes on this interview and for sure will come back to it each and everytime. 🙌🏻
The most important thing I saw in this interview was that when he talked, no matter for how long, she never said a word and kept her eyes on him. She was listening and present.
What i saw is the complete opposite. He is he one listenning and studying her and she is full of herself and doing all the things she said other people do.
@@simomaaroufihaving that reaction to this particular interview and women tells me that you're not experiencing the same reality as the rest of us, because you're a misogynist and probably also a bigot. I highly doubt that you've given even 1/10th of this woman's effort to our country in service. You can't see past your own nose, and people who eclipse you are perceived as a threat, especially women because you feel emasculated. To you, everything is a zero sum game. I'd feel pity for you, but I doubt you deserve it.
I once read a book by a psychologist about childhood trauma. One of the things that I always remember is that while kids need to process and talk about the things they experience, a weekly therapy appointment where they are expected to conjure up all these negative feelings can actually be detrimental. What matters is that they have a strong family bond, know they are understood and can talk about it any time they want and have been able to go through that initial processing...but a weekly date to go over it all again and again where they are expected to dig it all up and be sad all over again actually works against their ability to move on.
Then people become dependent on the feeling. That's how we get those people who say "I'm never leaving my therapist, can't live without them". They want to go and spill the beans, cry a bit, feel "validated" and go. More than validation it becomes a cycle of victim mentality
What I learned through good therapy is how to process stuck emotions. The reason people struggle to overcome anxiety, depression, and victimizhood mentality is because they have poor emotional regulation and were not taught that by caregivers. If children are crying and then being yelled at for crying, they will be afraid to feel things for fear of upsetting someone else. EMDR, meditation, and many other practices can be used in therapy and also practiced outside of therapy to help overcome these stuck, trapped emotions and experiences. We can develop better emotional maturity if we work through it. This woman just says "let it go", but if you can't process it, you will be stuck in it. My guess is that her parents were better skilled in helping her as a child with emotional regulation than others and have a very stable base to build on. But she's unaware of why others struggle bc this came naturally to her. A good therapist will not allow a patient to get stuck in rumination. They will try to help you feel the feeling and get it to pass through you. I wish I had known this decades ago, though it's never too late.
It’s unfortunate that this form of bad therapy isn’t addressed when going to therapy becomes a legal requirement in a case. Then there’s more salt added to the child’s wound.
This lady is smart. Be warm to people but if you are too friendly not good. True…I often said in the school years ago when the school system said we are now calling all the kids our friends everything was we are all friends. I thought this was wrong because as adults shouldn’t we be on a different level than the kids? Does this make sense to anyone ? It is like as a parent you are the authority figure.
I love how accountable she is. She isn't blaming other people, she isn't moping about events she can't change. Focusing on what "I can do" is a really beautiful lesson
Well yes, but she has a strong family structure and community. Her summers in Greece and feeling obligated to marry within her culture is a strong indication. Not everyone has those, especially several generations into the US. A certain narcissism sets in with success that can affect the mental health of your children, especially with this whole perfectionist mindset. Raising kids is an imperfect process. I'd love to see her interviewed in 20 years and see if she's changed at all.
There are two places to find the answers you have in your life. You can look inside or you can look outside. The people who look outside dream. Those who look inside are awakened.
Exactly. Makes you think that with all her knowledge of the world and the people in it. That shows us that when children are doing those things they are at risk, not learning as well and not safe.
Ah bullshit. Everyone already knows about phones. State education is full of Communists. TV is good with what you watch. You don't know this,? I don't work for the government and know this
I've got to say, usually I don't really listen to podcasts as I find them boring but man did I watched the whole video listening to every word. I really enjoyed it. You learn so much by these type of interviews/podcasts.
The reason this lady sounds so logical and humble is because she has an attitude of gratitude and is thankful for even the very smallest things that she is given in life. We could all take a lesson out of that playbook
Why are first generations so competent? Maybe not all, but it seems like everyone I like listening to is from that group. Even if her English has some interesting little quirks that throw me a bit. Fascinating interview. I plan to read her book. TY Steven.

One thing I've observed and truly appreciated is that she always mentions your name when beginning a story. I believe this is crucial as it fosters a sense of intimacy and connection between the conversation partners. Research supports this, suggesting that mentioning someone's name can encourage them to stay engaged and feel more involved in this conversation.
I absolutely hate it when people do that. Its annoying af to repeat someone's name as if they're not listening especially when they already ARE listening.
I absolutely adore Evy. She is very inspiring. So many of the skills she discussed I have used with my clients in counseling and my patients in the Emergency Room. A word of caution regarding her opinions about therapy and trauma. Trauma therapy is much more than and should never be just regurgitating the trauma experience weekly. Also, people have differing strengths, different wiring. Some people are verbal processors and benefit from psychoanalysis. And some people are incapable of participating in physical exercise to manage their stress. I'm truly happy that Evy has found the formula that works for her. There is no shame in needing prescription drugs or therapy to manage mental health symptoms if that is part of your effective formula. Find what works for you, be it therapy, art, music, baking, quality time with loved ones, watching a comedy, etc. It is normal and necessary to feel anxious and depressed. It is part of the human condition. It is vital to growth and resilience as it helps us process challenges and is a sign that something is out of balance and needs addressing. Find your formula and adjust as needed. Best to all of you.
Ya, depends on age and depth of the trauma, not everyone has been blessed with a decent life. BUT the vast number of people on here that WANT to be seen as victims is sickening. That is an even worse slap in the face to someone dealing with extreme trauma.

I'm 26 and have had a consistently messed up life due to being raised around a ton of meth addiction, poverty, and violence. Most of my family members (including siblings) were dead by my early 20s as a result. I think her advice about not letting your trauma become your identity is so valuable. I went to therapy for 2 years and for some reason my mental health just kept getting worse and worse. I realized it was because I was re-traumatizing myself because once I stopped going it felt like I'd taken a backpack filled with bricks off. Therapy can be a great tool but there is a limit where it does far more harm than good. I think a lot of people have a personality type where therapy is actually very bad for them and I am one of those types of people. It's incredibly scary to think we're as free and capable as we allow ourselves to be, especially when we've only ever seen those around us fail. Realizing I didn't have to be that person was devastating at first but I'm so much better off for it.
"we're as free and capable as we allow ourselves to be" are very wise and beautiful words. I work with people with similar backgrounds to yours. The programming is hard to break out of. The fact that you are listening to this podcast shows that you are interested in learning and growing as a person. I wish you well in your journey and hope that you have a happy and fulfilling life.
Therapy May have been Detrimental due to an uninformed Therapist. As an Example: If the Therapist wants to Apply ‘Cognitive Therapy’ & Focuses on the Client Changing & Accepting all of the Responsibility to Change their Perspective. Maybe the Person’s Real Problem, is that they are Actively Being ABUSED, & Mental, Emotional, & Neglect Counts. So, the therapist is Essentially Gaslighting the Client & Not Hearing their Painful Reality! Another guess: I can Imagine that if There is a Therapist that just allows the Client to talk& talk & talk, without any Input… Maybe the Therapist wants a STEADY CLIENT to help PAD their INCOME SECURITY, instead of actually Helping the Client to Progress & Heal. Think Outside the Assumption that YOU were to BLAME as that limits Other Real Possibilities… The Spiritual: GOD is Real & Wants 100% JOY, GOOD , LOVE, Prosperity, & ALL Positives. So, we can have Ugly Stuff, Especially from other People’s Bad Choices… But, we have to Choose Our Goals & Good & take Action toward WHO WE REALLY ARE! 🙏🏻 Blessings!☀️🌸🕊🍃

she does not have to fake what she believes even while being deceitful. she has honed that trait ever since she was little..You don't make it into the CIA being Honest ABE my friend they don't look for those types.,
I loved this, too. It's so important in a world where women are told to only do for others. I wish she had talked more about how people can find their sovereignty because it's so important that people truly understand that and work on practicing it.
I love how she brought up a therapist that is still self victimizing herself. What I’ve noticed is that A LOT MORE THAN HALF THESE “SPECIALISTS” are more messed up mentally and emotionally than the people they are treating. HOW THE HELL DO YOU EXPECT A BROKEN PERSON TO HEAL ANOTHER BROKEN PERSON?
Supply problem. The broken ones go into psychology hoping to fix themselves and others at the same time. And so tend to fail at both. You won't see as many go into engineering or medicine to fix their problems themselves because they present a much bigger challenge for a troubled individual
I have never met someone particularly interested in psychology/therapy as a primary career focus who didn't manage to bring up their own personal psych problems in the conversation.
I enjoy Evy, but as a medical professional want to add a comment about trauma. People react differently. It's not about weak or strong. The nervous system goes into sympathetic overflow. Traumatized people fight, flight, fawn. Talk therapy does not help that much if the midbrain, amygdala is spinning the trauma. Their are other techniques like somatic experiencing that allows the person to release the trauma versus staying stuck in it. Also some people appear strong, but actually dissociated the event. They block it out then may or may not feel it later. Unresolved trauma like repressed feeling can create further medical problems later in life.
@@gravy1770 Let's not forget that those fields are much easier to quantify vs psychology which is infested with bad actors of all sorts because of how nebulous the science can be. Honest psychology is hard to find.
This was awesome; that woman is awesome. I'm a Retired Marine Infantryman; and, quite a few of my stupid biases were firmly in-place as this interview began. She shut them all down.
You should work on muting your bias from past experiences so that you can live in the present. Otherwise, you miss opportunities by dismissing the talent of 50% of the population
Her entire example of that woman's trauma & experiences defining her. . . Hits 🎯 i have close family like this, they want to re-live or seem to want to re-live. They don't think they have a choice and I feel they need the continued pity/empathy expected but never received in the way they want it. It's so hard.
My little sister is like that to the point that we can't have a real relationship. The worst part is she doesn't see a problem with her willful misery and just wants to spread it.
Best interview ever. It’s the scenario that her training could never predict. Sixteen yr old kid who was presumably paralysed with fear and couldn’t show his hands after many minutes of being told he would be SHOT if he didn’t do so. He wasn’t deaf. He wasn’t holding a lethal weapon. He was petrified. This is truly remarkable.
The interviewer is just low-average; he has pre-arranged questions and does not follow up and ask "why". He gets an answer and moves to the next pre-arranged question. I get the impression that the guests know the questions in advance and have prepared answers. I'll never watch this guy again. Look at Larry King interviews. Everything a person says has within it another question to ask "why". This guy does not draw the guest out. He's a cardboard cutout, with narration/speaking skill only.
@@RxsieExdes21 It is not a conversation. It is a Q and A session with pre-planned questions and answers. after an answer, no further digging. He's NOT an interviewer here, he is merely a reader.

@@ellengarcia4041 Not necessarily the writer's fault. Blame it on our current public educational system's standard of "leave no child behind" so they all get a diploma even if they don't have spelling or proper English skills.
You don't have the skills. You can change that any day you want. Setting boundaries isn't just a natural skill your born with. My advice is don't look at the problem as this giant thing. Change can be a slow and often one of the most difficult process. Unfortunately there are so many things to distract us from confronting our our real issues . You recognize the issue. You did what you knew what to do at the time don't beat yourself up about the past. It's a skill based problem now. Learn how you got to where you are and learn how to not go back there. Personal change is one of the hardest thing I've personally ever done. But it has been my hardest struggles that have always turned the out to be most impactful of my life. Who cares how you are paying the price now. Every day is another day to change the things we do not like in our lives. It's also another day to buy a new pair of shoes and not deal with any of it.

This interview educates me way more than 100 therapy sessions. What she has to say is way more valuable than what my therapists have said so far. I’ve always realized that the classic psychotherapy doesn’t work for me because it stops me in the past and in my healthy energy to move on. This interview makes it clear. I thank you very much!
Yea honestly I believe her experience and what she has seen makes her words so much more powerful than the knowledge therapists gain in school. Sure, it's also knowledge, but it's only this sort of life or death situations and meeting all these different people in life that teach you the best and most valuable life lessons hands on.
It did work out, but there's another world where her partner is dead right now. I think it's still hard to say, without hindsight, what the right decision was.

I'm a therapist and this is what I have to say regarding recounting traumatic experiences: In therapy, it should serve the purpose of helping the individual *reprocess* the experience in a new way that will lead to resolution and ultimately decrease their suffering/symptoms. Sometimes just having an attentive and empathic listener is enough for a person but other times they require clinical interventions. Now of course, you have some individuals who are so entrenched in the identity aspect of their trauma that they will not allow it to be reprocessed in a new, more adaptive way. Once in a while I encounter people like this and as a therapist, the best I can do is continue to offer compassion, empathy and active listening while also try my best to challenge the defenses they've built towards change. It could take years for some people to finally take a risk, let go and allow transformation to take place.
I think she was very insensitive to how many people struggle to process emotions and traumatic experiences. I learned much from therapy so I'm no longer stuck in these emotions. My guess is that she had a much more stable foundation than her friend and that her parents helped her with emotional regulation as a child when her friend's parents likely did not do as good of a job. Not everyone can just put it down when they lack any skills and mechanisms to do it and then the trauma and victimhood becomes their identity.
Being a black young woman,, (& yes I appreciate identifying as such because indeed I am & I doubt it would make me perform any less than I normally would),, I naturally don't care much for therapy but I got into a really dark place at some point during my studies purely bcoz of financial constraints of being jobless in this 1st world country that I had come to for my higher studies. I honestly felt trapped & for the 1st time in my life, truly lacking any control whatsoever & was quickly avalanching to a deeper darker place and I finally succumbed & decided to seek counseling. My guidance counselor did a background inquiry which felt unnecessary to me coz like many people ofcoz I have some complex trauma,, none of which I intended to get into with him. All I remember about the sessions was how I appreciated how humourous my guidance counselor was, took my mind off the seriousness with which & how daunting I envioned my life. And just the consistency of getting ready to go to the office & debating about my pre-conceived notions & gaining a tip here & there that was actually valuable from the little I shared... It actually kinda helped shift my mindset a bit from where everything was negative to 'well, not everything is all that bad'. I didn't even really discuss the real problem that got me there coz well, there's nothing he could have done about my struggling financially, & esp in a way that didn't make me feel pathetic... & neither did I delve into my traumas really coz I hate that I always cry whenever I have to reiterate it, again,, but like truly, it helped even if I ended it at 4 sessions rather than the given 6 ones as soon as i felt like i was back to my baseline
She is a strong person, she might not understand how weak ppl feel and she can live her life without learning about that part. But weak ppl need to observe and to learn from ppl like her, so that they might be able to be strong one day. No trainer can make an athlete especially those who are not born with their health and skill
Everyone one has different ways of experiencing and coping with traumatic experiences and are traumatised by different experiences, what decimates one may not the other. There are so many influencing factors to consider, inherent resilience, genetic, biochemical, medical health, social support, childhood neglect, etc, etc. It is a good idea for public speakers to stick to their own lane. I would suggest leaving therapy and commenting on trauma to people who are more experienced and skilled. The words chosen in this podcast created the opportunity for some members of the audience who have experienced and processed trauma with less resilience to feel shame and harm their healing journey, that is problematic.
@@ChatGPT1111huh? Do you not have eyes and are you incapable of listening? Wow, Wow- what a humble and wip- sharp woman . Love how she voiced that being silent is a form of intelligence. When she was in a room with a bunch of very intelligent people in the room , and she simply listened. That was brilliant insight into her emotional intelligence reserve. Nice to listen to them both in this Podcast.
Evy, you are a legend. I love your outlook and best practices for living this life. We need more adults like you in this country! I am so tired of all the trauma-dumping. I have to redirect my own family members because they choose to continue to live where it’s unhealthy. I’m ordering your book, can’t wait to read it and pass it on for my teenagers to read!

I worked with USSS for protection of Hillary Clinton back in 2001 at Lowes Hotel in Miami Beach, a good experience. I have bumped into Evy. Very professional.
Wow, the therapy bit hit home. My ex wife saw three different therapists for years. We both ended up miserable. She is so scared, to let anyone get close. I felt her pain, and didn’t know how to reach her. After 28 years, she divorced me. Now she has a drinking and gambling problem. I’m much happier now, in my life. But can’t shake the feeling of letting her down. We had so much potential. The whole self accountability, and leaving the emotional garbage behind, is crucial.
She let you go so you could live your life. Every day you're happy you are making her sacrifice worth it. The problem she had is not something you were ever going to be able to fix.
I'm someone who goes to therapy to help solve personal problems. I learned stress management strategies. I explored why I have a hard time with certain things so I can put them behind me and not keep making the mistakes.
I finally learned this myself, letting other's be responsible for themselves, letting go of "trying to help" or "to fix them" - why am I so invested in trying to help others to fix themselves when they need to want to do this for themselves? what is my payoff? everyone is responsible for what they do, including what we do ourselves. I no longer do this, I look at what my payoff is for having them in my life. I am not responsible for what other's do. I focus on myself and those I am responsible for, my own children, my pets, those that are not able to help themselves. not grown adults who are making their own choices.
@@P9rkour90Yes she did, divorce me. I would have done the same, I was lonely, and miserable. She saved my life, I was dying there. My life is so much better, I am far happier. She still makes me sad, though. When I see her. She now has a drinking and gambling problem.
She's not right, though. Mental health is so important and her "just move on" mentality is the opposite of what stuck people need to do. She's telling people to just keep stuffing down their emotions rather than learning to regulate them. They should have learned this in childhood from parents, but if your parents are dysregulated, you will be, too. If everyone could learn this, we'd have a much better and more reasonable world.
How do u regulate your emotions?! After wasting all your times and energy /resources, at the end, you put it aside and move on… so just be responsible for our lives in the first place, we all make mistakes and fail …just learn from the past and move on, try very best to do better next time … really, what else can be done?! Just sayin
Exactly - you’re “just saying” as in blurting something just to say something. There are ways to regulate your emotions. Physical as well as mental techniques exist. They work. What doesn’t work is “moving on” and messing up again and again and again because you never learned the proper tools in the first place and too uninformed/unintelligent/stubborn/whatever to analyze, seek solutions, and correct your behavior.
If you know you are right, why get emotional… I guess do whatever Is best for you 🤷♀️I might be ignorant to you, but I just know I prefer being with strong and independent ppl, everyone is different!
This woman is a treasure! She is so clever, educated and beautiful, yet so grounded! Every word she is saying is gold! It would be so good to see more women like her in today's world. Just love her ❤ Thank you, Steven, for bringing her! Huge thanks to Evy for the value she spreads! ❤💐

Yeah… this is bad therapy guys. Good therapy supports you in personal growth and independence.

I can relate to this so much growing up in Flint bless you love
Think Outside the Assumption that YOU were to BLAME as that limits Other Real Possibilities…
The Spiritual: GOD is Real & Wants 100% JOY, GOOD , LOVE, Prosperity, & ALL Positives. So, we can have Ugly Stuff, Especially from other People’s Bad Choices… But, we have to Choose Our Goals & Good & take Action toward WHO WE REALLY ARE!
🙏🏻 Blessings!☀️🌸🕊🍃

Every single person in the USA needs to listen to this woman... especially "all the victims." It surely inspires me to change a lot of my standards.
Same. Makes me see my own victim mentality where it exists so I can squash it.
Look, just because a person realizes where her or his weak spots are doesn't mean he or she can alter his behavior. You can realize a hundred times that people wipe their feet on you, because you show your insecurity, but this realization itself won't make you more confident.
@@helenivanova5440 you’re so right. It takes a thoughtful person to recognize and acknowledge, but it takes a truly special person to actually change and correct
@helenivanova5440 You are so wrong. As a perky blonde scientist, I recognized why I wasn't being taken seriously. Once I started taking myself more seriously, others did too.
@@pippa3150 well, I don't state that it happens this way in a hundred percent cases. Sometimes that's true and realization itself is enough to change everything.
But it's obviously not enough to hear "just stop being a victim" to start feeling different immediately.
she has so many amazing skills, obviously - but what stands out to me is the emotional maturity. The ability to not be tossed about on every wave that comes your way. The ego in check, the ability to feel your feelings and still make good decisions for yourself and the people around you, the rare ability to resist narcissistically seeking something personally offensive in every situation.

After years of counseling for childhood issues that bled into adult issues and never getting the golden ticket of healing, I just gave up one day and accepted that I would just be living with my issues the rest of my life. I would still try to improve myself but I accepted that I was never going to be "fixed." To my surprise it was the most freeing and healing thing Ive ever done. As she said, to not carry that "trailer" behind me was such an incredible relief. There is still always some level of discordance but I don't give the beast my time and thoughts for it to feed on and I'm so much better for it.
This is such a wonderful way of seeing it. Thank you for sharing!

sometimes counseling doesn’t happen on a couch. but it was def ur own will! otherwise u wouldn’t have "received" that message that brought u some closure. keep on looking for more & may god bless u🙏
I don't think that was Evy's message, to accept you'll never be fixed. But the part of letting go is.
This is probably one of the best conversations I have been privileged to listen to in the past 10 years. It's bookmarked and saved and liked for review later.
Me too. Evy only talked when she had something worth saying, and this made me listen intently.

The problem is the school system has now got everything loaded on an online platform so there is no escaping it to some extent.
@roserosalindflying499 "No" can still be said
Love how she says that....being "sovereign" in herself. She is a legit strong woman, an inspirational bad ass... no whiff at all of fake girl boss energy. She's the Real Deal. Fantastic guest, keep 'em coming, and I'll keep coming back to watch 👊
she does not have to fake what she believes even while being deceitful. she has honed that trait ever since she was little..You don't make it into the CIA being Honest ABE my friend they don't look for those types.,
I loved this, too.
I have a relative as an EXAMPLE of that😢
I enjoy Evy, but as a medical professional want to add a comment about trauma.

I recognize that I haven't had the boundaries needed with people and am paying in ways I can't even begin to express.

Yea honestly I believe her experience and what she has seen makes her words so much more powerful than the knowledge therapists gain in school.
I love you for saying this.

“SHE” divorced you brother! DONT let her make you think otherwise

I love Evys mental health stance. So refreshing in a world full of therapists and prescription drugs
