- How to build a Super Cheap turbo kit from scratch! Turbocharged 1969 Pontiac 350. Low Buck DIY Turbo for a stock Pontiac 350. Long Tube Headers, custom welded Y pipe and cheap turbo all come together! How much power does a low-compression, 1969 Pontiac 350 make? How much power does a turbo add? Can I run a turbo on pump gas? Check out this video where I ran a 350 Poncho motor then built a turbo kit for it, then dyno tested the turbo 360 combo!
Honestly I love this. 1. A non-standard engine with parts someone could find. 2. Some NA and boost dyno results to show before and after. I wonder what 10psi would have looked like? Would it still be driveable? Please do more odd style engines, its fun to see how NA to boost affects them.
It is pretty fantastic
Yes, yes, yes.....I'm a lifelong Ford guy but I've always had a soft spot for BOP engines, especially the Poncho. Good to see it getting some lovin'.
Im a die hard ford fan but also cherish the 403 olds in my El Co
I absolutely love this others guys stuff. I'm working on a turbo EFI flathead Perkins engine for my 66 Massey Ferguson backhoe.
E85?
@@AustinRBa possibly, it's 11.1 compression from the factory. It's a model20. I have E in it now, have to run the choke 1/4 mass. Lol
very other guys!
I wish I could flip my long tubes forward! Blow thru is cool! I want to do this to my Olds 403 Trans Am!
can be done with stock manifolds too
@@richardholdener1727 my stock manifolds were cracked to the point where blue flame was visible
Look at Richard welding something Now!!!
Awesome! Thanks for representing the other-other guys! 350 Pontiacs don't get much respect even among Pontiac guys. I'd love to see a dedicated other guys episode with this engine and see how much boost it'll take! 🙏
Gotta try the olds 403. Its another odd-ball.
Those poncho 350's have always been kind of underrated. I've seen them run just as rowdy as a 400 with just mostly a head and cam swap. I had a 350 69' firebird I eventually did a 400 swap. After all the time and money, I couldn't really tell much difference. I now have a cheap 326 I paid $150 for. I've thought about building it for boost. Maybe try to fab up or modify a intake set up like that came on the turbo T/A 301's. But probably easier and safer to just go with aftermarket fuel injection. Just a set of modern aluminum heads and a nice roller cam setup. That lil 326 would outrun my Ram 3 400 But the best part If I blew it up I'm not really out much vs imploding one of my 400's or my 428. The prices people are asking for even the mid/late 70's low compression 400's over the last few years is almost as ridiculous as the recent inflated prices at Mcdonald's.
It doesn't have to work perfect, it just has to work! Stock cam and boost are always great for mid-range power...and in most cases makes more than a typical hot NA setup.
Thanks for the Pontiac content!
Thanks Richard great test! Would have loved to see more boost but you went above and beyond just doing that in 8 hrs!
awesome stuff loving the stock motor turbo setup !
Nice to see one of the "Other" 350s getting some attention. Now do the same to the Buick and Olds 👍
He already did a 455 Buick
@atenooie The 350s, Buick 350 and the Oldsmobile 350.
@@jaytownjunkyardfiles1999 you are right, 350’s for the win!!!
@atenooie I almost need a different engine for each type of driving I'm going to do. Sometimes I want a 5 liter, a 5.7 and some kinds of driving requires the full Monte . . . 455. So many choices, hard to settle on just one.
That belt reminds me of the belt on my old VW Beetle. You have 1 job lol
This is the stuff we all watch your channel for! Taking old junk and making power! Now you have to try a 301 or find an Oldsmobile paper weight 260ci v8 with a turbo.
Would love to see the tubing extended to replicate a rear mount turbo and compare curves.
Be about the same. Maybe more lag.
watch the remote turbo video
turbo magnum! turbo magnum! turbo magnum! Mopar 360 magnum! Please do it!
Rich is the man! He makes it look easy.
This is crazy but here goes, how about a shoot out of NA 6.1 hemi, 6.2 ls, and 6.2 SOHC Ford? Too crazy? How about a series on the 6.2 Ford? You’re the right guy for the job.
Wow! You are the man Rich! Thank you for the effort it took to pull this off…
lol, I wonder how long it's been since an engine that still uses V-belts was on the Westech dyno...? Cool vid Rich!
they just ran a 1957 Fuelie 283
I'm such a ding-bat sometimes! I The entire 11 minutes is just watched this I couldn't figure out how it was running without the fuel pump connected to any lines. Lol Seeing that sludge brought back memories. Get a junkyard motor. The pans would always have a inch thick of mud. Think oil is a lil better quality in the last 20yrs
we don't need no stinkin fuel pumps
Longtubes into that Y pipe setup is both functional and comical.
a win/win
I love these Pontiacs and rebuilt several as my first engine projects. The 350, 400 and 455 are all the same engine. Almost identical except bore X stroke so those extra heads will fit any of the 3. 2.11 and 1.77 good sized valves on the 6x’s if memory serves from 30 years ago. Lower rpm range than a Chevy but lots of power for its era. Excellent video!
Of course it’s going run good it’s a Pontiac!
Great video always different engines. A gm 350 shoot out would be awesome. Olds, Buick , Chevy and Pontiac.
Ah Richard can you make a video about the Crossfire V8 in the 84 Corvette mods to help the factory 205 HP to something a like bit more thrilling. Thanks love the channel.
Poncho coming to life
This would be a great set-up for 400M Ford engine w/ the big heads and poopy low-compression pistons. 👍
I’d love to see a video exploring the merits of engine coatings. Ports, chambers, piston crowns, headers, bearings, etc. just to see if any coatings makes financial sense when searching for power.
You made my gto setup. I tagged you on Instagram too😂😂😂 I have a 1972 350 with a 7875 and holley terminator stealth blow through. I have a few short clips on youtube as well. ❤
cool
I wonder how much boost that sucker could have taken? 400 hp seems somewhat minimal for 350 cubes on a turbo.
So much awesomeness in one video
Hey Rich, you know what is better than 1 turbo?? You guessed it 2 turbos!! Very cool video!!! Thanks
Thanks Richard, you inspired me years ago starting with the GT45 on old engines.
I made my own kit on a 350 Oldsmobile with no.8 heads, 1976 Smog motor and that GT45 turbo. Put a FiTech 600hp Power Adder on top and a locked out HEI. Put it in an old Altered Chassis and now runs mid 10’s with 8psi of boost on a non prep track, Cheap fun!!!
czcams.com/video/9SPM8tbzEF8/video.html @14:55
Sorry that it is in German 🙏
That is awesome!
@@richardholdener1727 Thanks for taking the time to reply 🙏🙏🙏. Currently the rear end gearing is not long enough. I will put in a 3.73 instead of the 3.91 as it hits the limiter of 5800rpm @126mph. Do not want to rev the engine higher with the stock parts. So far only the valve springs have been upgraded. Before I had severe valve float at 5200rpm, bent a pushrod. Cam is a RV comp cams.
@@atenooie I am looking to do the same kind of build, nicely done man! At what rpm does the GT45 spools?
@@maxpower479 I start on the 2-step at about 2500 rpm with 2,5psi. As soon as I let go boost will increase.
2800 rpm - 3,5 psi
3500 rpm - 5,1 psi
4250 rpm - 7,5 psi
5000 rpm - 8 psi
5400 rpm - 8,6 psi
This was with a soft spring
With a harder spring it looked like this.
2400 rpm - 2,1 psi 2-step
Run
2800 rpm - 3,4 psi
3400 rpm - 3,9 psi
3900 rpm - 6,3 psi
4600 rpm - 10,5 psi
5000 rpm - 13,4 psi
5200 rpm - 16 psi
This is from my data logs.
Please remember that my car is very lightweight. If your vehicle is heavier it can show more boost earlier in the rpm range.
My build is pretty simple, log manifolds made from mild steel, GT45, 50mm wastegate l, 50mm blow-off valve, fi-tech 600 PA, ring gap increased, beefed up valve springs.
Return of the turbo drain in the old fuel pump location so I did not have to drill the oil pan.
@@atenooie excellent, Thanks for the details!
Great custom turbo build. How about building a Pontiac 301 Turbo engine big bang and see what the Pontiac Turbo Trans-Am should have been?
Have you done any dyno testing on the Pontiac 301 Factory turbo engine in 80-81 Trans Ams? Would love to see what can be done with one of those
I have not-but works the same
Love the content
Richard is the man!
Please make a Boost Goodness shirt!
I’d love to see a turbo 455 inch oh my !!!
Eliminating that 90-degree junction would probably unleash more ponies.
Love the diy y pipe
Right on
Tuning on a dyno stand and doesn’t have to fit a car no problem! Let’s go turbo!
you make it fit where it has to fit
WWSRD? That's funny 🤣
Great follow up !
For anyone wondering, no the 350 Pontiac is not really good. Just go chevy
That 475 lb-ft of torque would be so much fun.
Should do a comparison in output between that t-section and a Y-section that feed the turbine. Is there a difference in power through the band?
there won't be at this flow and power level
T-Shirt “All the holes!” ✌️
Boost fixes everything!!!!!
Great encouragement for the home turbo creators ! But - omg - that """ Super Ritchie Y """ pipe is reallly really horrific !
and yet it works and follows the formula-people often wprry about things that are not really problems-just go by the results
Made a Pontiac 350 into a Pontiac 455 power lol lmao 😂 that's great!
Great vid.
With the weak wearing on the crank shaft the black would have very little strength to hold back the rotating mass underboost extreme boost I mean added protection are you going to do for the block I've seen the crankshaft and connecting rods and pistons eject themselves out of the engine going down the quarter-mile
garrett turbos are like strippers big on the front small backend
I wonder if it's possible that the increase in power provided by headers is due to the pistons having less pressure on the exhaust stroke, freeing up power to the crank.
Great video!
Nice power gain
Haha you did it!
Now the question, is it going back into the truck with a turbo?
Love your videos! Thinking of doing this to my ford 360FE ratrod. Did you use any electronically controlled systems like an MSD 6al-2 for timing? Or did you set timing and go with it? My goal is 7psi of boost, blow thru carb style
just the HEI
I think it would be happy with 12~13 psi keeping the same timing in it
Lots of boosty goodness
What happened to the Buick big block stuff you was doing?
Where do you put the oil and coolant lines into the motor. I'm also boosting my 77c10 and I have all I need just can't figure out where I should put my lines
oil drain to pan, and take the oil feed off the motor for the turbo
Would love to see a similar video on the Trophy 4 Pontiac!! What’s going on with that engine?
soon
Hey Richard, how streetable are blow through carbs?
according to Kevin at CSU-they work well
Richard just curious, do you have to put any kind of restriction in the turbo feed line on order to keep the rest of the engine oiled?
Great test!!
Low compression it's perfect block for turbo but it's not low compression ratio.
this base non HO 350 is low comp
@@richardholdener1727 Hi, I'm French and don't understand your language perfectly, and it was by watching the video the second time that I understood that it was low compression because that power wasn't ridiculous in N/A.👍🏻🐯
Man. That setup would probably rip on my smogger headed 400sbc with a decent erson cam in it. Hell it woyld rip on my 4.5 ltr Mercedes v8. Do you think a gt 35 would be better on smaller displacement not going for more than 400 ish? Its probably 200, so maybe 240-250 on the Dyno setup.
Be very responsive 35r is what early model Barras had factory. Mine was very mild , valve springs and 12 psi boost.
Full boost by 2-2200 rpm on a 4l 6 and 420 atw hp.
Wait is that a normal carb or a blow through carb? If it's normal is it safe to put boost through it?
Get a 750 holley dp, replace the brass floats, get the weakest power valves you can find, drill out the powervalve bypass holes a couple bits, jet up 5 sizes (or so), make sure you've got a fuel pump/regulator that can supply 1:1 fuel/boost ratio, those are the basics, there are a lot of other things you're gonna wanna do, like vent extensions and whatnot. bottom line, is you need a wideband to tune with or you'll be making aluminum crumbles quickly.
Boosty goodness!
the best kind of goodness
Heads/cam/intake, or boost? I'm thinking this was more cost effective.
this needs a cam and springs at least-different boost is coming
Now do a cheap 1000 horsepower deal Rich lol!
What was the compression ratio Richard?
high 8s to low 9s or so
Thanks! keep up the great work mate!@@richardholdener1727
WAIT, WAIT, WAIT.......WHERE'S THE TECHNO MUSIC?
Richard, does the distance from the exhaust ports to the turbine inlet actually have a lot to do with turbo lag? I'm really considering a turbo in the bed of my truck vs under the hood is why I'm asking. I keep recalling proper turbo sizing is key in all your turbo videos, and not much about placement.
I don’t know about lag but I got halfway thru a rear mount turbo project and ended up moving it to the engine bay. There’s more room in the bed, but running the exhaust and intake tubes all the way to the front is a huge pain. Lots of leaks and trying to rout stuff around frame rails. Unless your putting a 454 in a mini truck you’re better off just making some room in the engine bay (or cutting a hole in the hood!)
it does change lag-but still works
What’s the story on this engine ? Is it yours ? Just a test motor for content ? A customer ?
I bought it
Oil feed for the turbo from the oil pressure sensor bung?
yes
Hey rich my uncle just gave me a 68 chevy 307 do i keep it or junk it
I would probably sell it someone for a project. There are so many 350's out there to pick from.
Keep it, and Rev it!!!!
@@randallmason9687LOL.
Put it in a fuelie!!
@michaelgarrow3239 I have 2 1955 bel airs thinking about replacing the inline 6 that's in the wife car with it
I think this is great content, it proves that Pontiac engines are only useful as boat anchors. Boosted or not boat anchors nonetheless.
285 was alright, early LS are only 320 and it's mid 8:1 compression . 413hp on 6 psi at 5000rpm isn't too bad at all especially with the piping. Be an absolute tree stump puller.
Really couldve made that y pipe better
and yet...we should look at the data
@@richardholdener1727doesnt mean it couldnt have been better richard.
unfortunately there is absolutely no room to do this in a Firebird...
you route the exhaust to fit your chassis-can use stock ex manifolds
@richardholdener1727 How would you get the return into the carb with the shaker? Unless you get an aftermarket highrise hood I'm not seeing a way.
This guy is good, but he is boring. Power nation's is better.
