On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

This story was told by David BIO Baranack. He was the RIO of an F-14 and states he and his pilot defeated 3 to 4 F-4 Phantoms in a dog fight after there wingman had been taken out prior to the merge.
The way he tells the story, this definitely should be on your list of possible challenges as it's a real life event.
Fun fact: the tail surfaces of the F-14 are bigger than the wings of the A-4.

Yeh. Its amazing how small the A-4 is (despite its bomb carrying capability!) and how huge the F-14.
Tbf the F14 has unusually big tail surfaces to make up for lack of roll authority from its swept wing design and high "wing back" stability, but thats just nitpicking :D

The Top Gun A-4 was fitted with a much more powerful engine than the standard engine, and had unneeded equipment removed to save weight. It was basically a flying engine, used to simulate the MiG-17. A more fair fight against the F-14 than shown here.
Guess the only way to simulate that is to load down the F-14 with 4 Phoenix missiles as well as Sidewinders - (and also ban the F-14 from using or jettisoning the Phoenixes).

My grandaddy brother was one of the first instructors at the Fighter Weapons School. He flew the A-4 in Vietnam, off the Essex. I would give almost anything, if he could have lived to see the DCS A-4 in VR...

A-4 was a serious little bomber back in the day. Small, great at low level, agile with AAA, awesome jet. My dad flew them in the Marines and loved flying it.

I think the A-4 was seen as a MiG-17 simulator so I'm not sure it would have been simulating Fox Twos.

One really interseting thing about the F-4 is imo that its clearly not amazing at slow speeds, but look how it often and accurately it gets the nose on in the end one circle fight against the A-4!
Even slow, the F-4 almost always retains some level of nose authority. Not in a snappy or fast way, but its legit difficult to acchieve loss of control, let alone engine flameouts. The wings design, slats and stability assists, besides powerful engines and wing surface, must really do a number. They show where 4th gens will go.

Again, really loving the F-4 content, and F-4 + A-4 is even better! The A-4 was used by the instructor pilots at Top Gun for dissimilar combat training to replicate the MiG-17 though, not because it was a bigger challenge. The F-5 adversary aircraft replicated the MiG-21.
I'm confused. I have it on good authority that the A-4 is smaller, faster, and more maneuverable than the F-14.

The A-4 isn't faster than the F-14. Unless the F-14 pilot makes a mistake and bleeds off most of his speed.
The A-4 training variants have pretty much everything that doesn't keep them in the air ripped out so they weigh almost nothing, between that and the instructors actually knowing what they are doing probably make the A-4 all of those things.

@@williamstevenson5534 the aggressor A-4's have a lower top speed, but a better acceleration envelope on the deck, so they can recover from energy-bleeding maneuvers more quickly than the beefy Tomcat. They don't have the 14's raw power, but they are far more "zippy", as it were.

I've always been a fan of the A-4. When I was stationed in Guantanamo in the late 70's there was a squadron of A-4's there. Great to see those things flying around. Good job.

I just did a good deal of research on the A-4M. Such a tiny aircraft by comparison with the Phantom, and nicely maneuverable, but could benefit from that engine upgrade that occurred near the end of production... As it is, though, you acquitted yourself well. I didn't actually expect you to survive against either aircraft. Shows the difference an experienced pilot can make.
Great fights. All great aircrafts for this scenario. Especially loved the Tomcat pouncing on the Skyhawk like a mongoose vs a cobra. 😆

Compared to a lot of other aircraft at the time, the F-14 was just such a beast. Would love to see this type of dogfight showdown among the F-14, F/A-18, and F-35C.

Im suprised the F4 wasnt preflaring as soon as he got out in front in that first round. GS has definetly taught us the importance of preflaring!

Growing up on miltary bases I have seen the scooter on many occasions, when it'' clean it is very maneuverable.

How can you counter an offset two-circle? You've explained how you can get one going, but how do you get out of it and get back into the "overlapping" two-circle?
In those videos where I explained the offset 2 circle at the end I explain how to counter them in the tacview portion if you want a visual aid, but simply stated you just copy his moves he climbs up climb, he pulls down u copy him, so as he is offsetting you’re offsetting your circle back on top of his and therefore keeping the fight overlapped.

The F14 , in its day was such a bird of prey. Not only in its ascetics, but in its performance. It looks the part of a chiseled hunting beast.
Suggestion - Make your A-4 Skyhawk a bit lighter in this 1 vs 1 dogfight by only carrying 2 Sidewinders, instead of 4.

My uncle flew the A4 off the USS Enterprise before the start of the Vietnam Conflict.
Can really see a big difference in the newer aircraft in the fact of we dont see them osilating nowhere near as much. Seemed like that was all these aircraft were doing, rocking back and forth 😂
