      I hope that you will all be safe. Can't help feeling a little concerned - given I live in the world's most locked down nation (New Zealand). If you have an addiction to Furious Driving, that makes me feel better because I have developed one too, especially this Volvo series. I have to admit I like the old square rigged Volvos.
      I rather like the music of ABBA - it's very solidly crafted when you listen to it properly with an open mind (much to my partner's delight - she's a life long fan). I like listening to the Swedish language too - it's pretty cool. Take care Daniel and be safe.

    So much more fun than the Tesla! This made my day, really miss the noise and lovely drive of the 740. Two of mine had the black and blue dash, the last one was tan. So familiar after spending an entire childhood towing a caravan with the G-reg estate. They really are lovely to drove despite their fairly archaic underpinnings. And to my mind an easy to care for useable old car is cheap to run and environmentally friendlier than anything new, especially a Tesla.

      If I am not entirely mistaken, the Side of the gas pump symbol on the dash which has the hose, is supposed to be the side of the car with the filler cap! I.e. if the symbol has the hose on the right side, the filler is on the right side of the car. The arrow is used when the symbol hose is on the other side. I am not 100% this is true, but it has been so for ALL cars I have ever driven, except one, a Renault Traffic. I would love feedback on this comment from other people if you have experrianced the same!

I recall the car had a 2.3 litre petrol engine rated at 131hp. Fast in a straight line but not so good on wiggly roads, and the headlamps were pretty hopeless until I got some bulbs which were 100 watts on main beam and 80 watts on dipped.

    I bought one of these new in 1988. 2.3 petrol, 5 speed manual. At the time, I had a business covering 3 towns in country South Australia. between business, regular 260 km round trips to Adelaine, and occasional 2800 km round trips to Sydney, I was putting 100,000 kms a year on the car, not all on sealed roads. A couple of observations. Flat to the floor in 5th, a 2.3 l Volvo will do an indicated 180km/h. It will do that for over an hour without lifting (I reached civilisation) . On the low octane unleaded then available, the 2.3 will ping its head off if you go over 90 km/h when it's 45C outside. If you drive really gently, you can get 1000 km out of a 75l tank.

    Good to see the Volvo running so well, my Volvo V70 battery is 15 years old, and only now showing signs of giving up, after 9 days of standing idle it didn't sound too enthusiastic to spin the engine .
    My 1989 740 GLE was a dream to drive, it was an automatic, but on the motorway was incredible relaxing to drive, would cruise at 80-100 mph with no problem.
    Good to see you wearing gloves plus sanitizer at the garage, but why didn't you wear gloves in the supermarket ? or did you ? couldn't see from the video, but I always spray my woolen gloves with watered down Zoflora disinfectant before I leave home, because don't forget that all those items you bought from the supermarket have been handled by many people, any of which could have the virus on their hands ! I even put the shopping away with my gloves on, which incidentally are damp with disinfectant ! so kill any virus instantly, just a thought in this scary situation.

    @Bratfalken Před 4 lety

    The lightbulb out relay is a picky one, you need exact balance on left versus right side, no different wattage, it is the largest relay behind the ashtray in the center column. It works that warninglight, the turn indicators and the seatbelt warning ligth too. Some goes bad if they are left lopsided for too long and costed a small fortune when Volvo sold them, finding a good one at a scrapyard is often easier. But there are several variants of them so get the one with the exact right number. The fueltank is most often a 60 liter variant, only early 760 had an extra canister above the standard keeping an extra 15 liters.

    • @Bratfalken
      @Bratfalken Před 4 lety

      @@furiousdriving I don't know how it works in the UK, but in Sweden those 21W/5W where used as followed: the 21W (along with the rear position lights) got power when the lightswitch was on 0 position (and the ignition was on), it was legal as daytime running lights on Volvos and Saabs, (if your car didn't have these, you had to use low beam while it was bright outside) once you switch to parking lights or low beam, those bulbs went to the 5w mode! Many cars ran around with one in 21w mode and the other in 5w, as the owner did not see the right way to put it in. Also, the lightswitch burnt out on many early models of 240 and 740, this problem was later solved with relays instead of running the full power through the switch to these and the headlights. We had one 740 that was slightly "pimped out" by it's previous owner, the rear fogligths had switched sockets to 21/5w twin treaded ones so you had 3 glowing rear lights on each side and then on the very edge out against the curb there was yet another socket added in what I guess was the rear side position lights for the US market! So all in all eight rear 5w lightbulbs! And still a working 21w foglight on each inner position. ;-)

    The first time I went to the supermarket in lockdown, I never saw a single car either on the way there or the way back. God it was weird. Empty roads are a driver's dream in theory, but for me it was absolutely horrible. Of all the things I could miss, it's the traffic that I miss most of all. Strange.

    I know what you mean - there's that eerie feeling you're doing something you shouldn't be doing, even if you know you can. Most of these safe-distancing rules are just common sense and shouldn't need to be taken to extremes. Jacob Rees-Mogg mentioned when he was at morning prayers in Parliament, Mr Speaker walked past him less than a foot away, so you can't be too extreme about it!

    Is the auxiliary belt squeaking or some bearing noise when you set off??? 😬 Depending on the year... Make sure it does or doesn’t have a PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system.... They are usually forgotten about and every 70,000 to 80,000 miles you need to check the pipes are not blocked and are not rock hard!... It’s an emission control system that puts the crank case fumes back into the engine to burn them off.... When they block they cause oil leaks.... On my c70 to find if it’s working correctly if you place a rubber glove over the open oil filler it should not blow the glove up but try to suck it in..... Just something I learned that the 740 was one of the first to use this system
