This movie simply doesn't work without Richard Dreyfus. His gradual descent into madness is so funny. So many great moments, but my favorite is "It's called death therapy, Bob. It's a guaranteed cure." Another great Dreyfus comedy is "Stakeout".

I'm thinking that his madness could have been genuine. I'm saying that because Richard Dreyfus has said on a few occasions since then that he didn't particularly enjoy working with Bill Murray.

One of the things that makes this movie work so perfectly, is the perfect balance with Richard dreyfus's character. He had to be likable enough and relatable enough that you could feel his pain, and at the same time just enough of a jerk that you could laugh at it.

    • @nsasupporter7557

Everybody sided with Bob because he was so likable, which made you forget about the way Dr Marvin felt.

Richard Dreyfuss is like my spirit animal. I love how he's intense, twitchy, driven, exasperated, doesn't always get on with other actors etc. I see myself in him!
He tells a story about how Bill Murray went mad at him on set, saying no one likes him, and threw a glass ash tray directly at his head!

"You think he's gone? He's not gone. That's the whole point! He's never gone!"
"Is this some radical new therapy?"
    "YOU SEE?"
Fun Fact: Richard Dreyfuss and Bill Murray's favorite movie of their own.
Casting Notes Fact: Julie Hagerty is only ten years older than Kathryn Erbe, who played her daughter. Both Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss admitted that they did not get along during filming.
Location Location Fact: The vacation house where this was filmed was actually in Virginia on Smith Mountain Lake. For the scene in which the house blows up, producers used a 3/4-sized model replica of the actual house that they detonated on a nearby lot.
Financial Success Fact: Director Frank Oz was very concerned the film would flop as he, Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss all had different opinions on what would make the movie truly funny. However the film turned out to be a surprising critical and commercial success and was Touchstone Pictures second highest grossing comedy of the year after Father Of The Bride (1991).

I love how this slowly escalates into Bugs Bunny territory with the dynamite. There aren't enough comedies anymore where someone is driven insane by the unfairness of the universe.
Followup recommendation: Bill Murray's most underappreciated classic comedy is "Quick Change" with Geena Davis. He's a bank robber.

Btw it’s very good to be open about depression. Nearly everybody gets depressed at least sometimes. Of course some people suffer it a lot more, but modern society snd the internet and smartphones have massively increased depression. But so many people hide it (depression) away, instead of being open and honest. If you broke your arm you wouldn’t hide it, you’d be honest about it and ask for help and they’d be no shame about that. The exact same applies with depression. There’s no shame about having depression - that’s complete nonsense.
Some things that doctors/psychologists say can be a big help: daily exercise (even just walking outside 5 or 10 minutes every day is good), and also vitamin D with K2 (taking that every day). Both exercise and vitamin D help regulate our hormones.
    Just thought I’d mention that.
Our bodies naturally produce vitamin D if we get enough sunlight, but if we don’t get enough sunlight then our bodies can’t produce the vitamin D we need to regulate our hormones and make us feel good.
    God bless you!

One of the things Richard Dreyfuss infused into Dr. Leo Marvin is the "slow burn." He could do it on command on big scales and small. He'll start off as a smolder in town, then flare up at Bob. Then back at the house, he starts off at a smolder, gets hotter, then flares up, each one getting hotter and hotter.
The only two other examples I can think of is Judge Smails from Caddyshack, and actor Jackie Gleason, in almost any role he wanted to. Judge Smails started his slow burn by getting angry at a simple LAMP placed between him and another character, Danny. It got worse over the course of the movie.
Jackie Gleason was perfecting his slow burn before color TV was even invented, but a good modern example is his Buford T. Justice character in the movie, Smokey and the Bandity, 2nd highest grossing movie of 1977, behind Star Wars.
