Great video and great info. I put my first drone into the same tree 3-4 times simply because I didn't trust the RTH feature. I realized that if the RTH malfunctioned the worst that would happen was it would land in the tree. Since I already had that one covered, I relaxed and let the drone work it's magic, I haven't been in a tree since. My wife on the other hand......Well that's a different story.
I've subbed and look forward to catching up on whatever you have to offer. If you look at my channel, be aware that I'm not only Grumpy but I'm profane too. I'm gonna start trying to control that somewhat but I expect I'm too old and have been cussing too long to stop now.
Take care and play/work safe. Remember to "Endeavor to Persevere."

I've seen the Phantom 3 in action - pretty sweet! A fellow pilot had one out at his hangar last fall. He demonstrated the Return to Home feature by shutting off the controller. It came back and landed, smooth as butter. He also got a nice clip of a Citation landing (to head off the critics and legal 'experts' yes, he kept it at a safe altitude and location, and flew it completely legally - pilots who also fly registered drones are particular about the laws since it can in fact affect our licenses if we don't follow them). Very impressive piece of machinery, changed my until-then negative opinion of drones in a hurry.

Nice video. I paid 679 for mine last June, but it was my second one. I had my first phantom 3 advanced for a year and a motor seized up while flying over water. That was a 1000 dollar heart break. I had 2 spare batteries and a case and was relieved a replacement was a lot cheaper than in 2015. I have registered all my airplanes and helicopters and drones with the FAA and I am AMA at our local club here in Gillette Wyoming.

As a resident of the state of Arkansas, I too was called by the same FAA Safety Inspector based on a complaint of a drone flying in the Hot Springs area. He is the only FAA inspector in all of Arkansas and all he does all day long is take complaints. Use the Internet, where we all post videos and our contact information and call each and every one of us to make sure we are flying safe and that we know the laws. He asks simple questions, such as where the nearest airport and trick questions like heliports. He's simply trying to keep people from flying into a football stadium or do something that hurts all drone pilots, licensed or not.

You're a lot braver than I am concerning putting your number out there. I used to have a video that showed the back of my truck which had a phone number on it. You would be surprised at how many people there are out there that think just because you answer a question that somehow they've found a new friend and they become a real pest. I tried to tell one guy that I was pretty busy and just didn't have the time to answer loads of questions and it got a little scary before it was over. Loads of sick people in the world these days.

Nice video. I received a phantom three standard for Christmas.I don't know what all the differences are between the standard any advanced but I can tell you that mine has the GPS positioning system, and the return the home feature that you mentioned. Both of which are very nice features. Another thing that the unit monitors during flight is signal strength from the remote. I was flying mine in my backyard, which is in a subdivision , near several houses, and I had a warning come up on the iPhone screen which said that there was strong interference in the area and that I should be cautious about flying it too far away. I thought that was pretty cool too. It also has a feature that I haven't used yet which is called following or follow me. The drone at altitude will follow a moving remote on the ground if you set it up properly. Very fun to fly, and very much worth the money I think. Thanks for sharing.

Great little clip on the drones. I've just recently developed an addiction to them after my daughter got me a small one for Christmas. I'm up to 3 of the cheaper drones of different varieties(mini stunt drone, mini camera drone, and a larger sport/stunt/camera drone).. Your info was very helpful for my next drone adventure. I'm a long time RC flyer, which makes flying the stunt/sport drones a ton of fun, but I'm liking the camera idea alot after using the cam on my larger drone.. So thanks for posting that info... much appreciated.... I'm going to look into the DJI for sure..... and yes, I registered with the FAA. due to the size of my RC planes. The FAA has definitely encroached on the RC hobbyist like myself. Its totally wild that they called you.. ha.. I can easily believe it though from stories that I've heard. Sounds like you handled it very nicely for sure. Even very small drones can fall under their umbrella size specifications... as we must register if flying anything more then .55lbs..which is a fuzz over 8oz... I'm sure you know more about it then I do though... I wish you well with your drone flying. It is alot of fun for sure. Thanks again.

I do own a DJI drone and the very first thing I'd ever taken in to perspective is the possibility that it may hit an aircraft. Safety and privacy are my top concerns.
Before I fly my small (or large) unmanned aircraft, I read through the "checklist". The "B4UFLY" FAA app and/or multiple apps are needed to determine "No Fly" zones.
If pigeons can take down a dual engine passenger jet, a plastic "toy" can potentially do the same. So these small adult toys are not a toy, but something that require utmost attention, a lot of reading, and critical thinking.
    Happy piloting!

I have a standard thought and performed research because of price, camera on advance is a little better but you can't really tell the difference and it has a little more distance but the standard can be updated with a inexpensive antenna and get almost the range of a Phantom 3 pro. Go for the standard if you doing it for a hobby and photo and video,

This is 2018 August, I have been flying drones for about 4 years now, been registered with the FAA for almost three years now, time to renew in December...Some time ago I held a commercial helicopter certificate, that is a maned helicopter .....I still have a hard time thinking of these plastic quadcopters as anything but toys.....seems like since the quadcopters came out, every RC aircraft, is now considered a DRONE ! I am a hobby flier, I never fly over 400 feet high, in fact I very seldom go that high, my normal altitude is about 200 feet, for high flying, most of the time I use my drone as a camera platform close to the ground...It always gets me that I can hover my drone 6 feet off the ground and take a picture with it and can't sell it, but I can take the camera off the drone and stand in the exact spot and take the exact picture, and do whatever I want with that picture....I think that there should be a zone, oh say about 20 feet or below that you can take a picture, without a commercial license from the FAA....this idea that the FAA controls all of the air space from your grass the the edge of space is crazy, my trees go 60 feet up into their air space, my grass grows 3" up into their air space, My lawn tractor travels through their air space every time I mow MY lawn....Every vehicle on earth travels through their air space......When you built your home and shop, did you get permission from the FAA to build in their air space.......?because according the the FAA they control everything from the dirt to space....Now to clarify a few things, when I am flying my drone and hear a small plane in the area, I bring my drone down and land it, until the plane is no long heard, and I always have my drone in sight. Las weekend I asked the property owner, if I could take some video of an old 100 year old smoke stack on his property, he said it was fine, no problem...while I was flying that day a couple small planes entered the area, I landed and after a while got tired of waiting for them to leave so packed up and went home, came back a few hours later after they were gone and finished what I was doing......I just fly for the fun and I am 71 years old now and that is about all I can do to have fun, besides riding my motorcycle with the Patriot Guard Riders to honor my fellow veterans, on their last ride home.....I am so sorry just noticed this is way to long....Bye

the DJI standard has GPS a range of three-quarters of a mile it sells for $500 at Walmart 530 with tax it has everything yours has except for it has a 2.7 K gimbal camera and not a 4K in yours has a WiFi extender so it has a little bit further range but the DJI 3 standard is pretty close to what you got and it's $200 cheaper but if you want to even better drone get the Bebop it has a much lighter weight and has a better skycontroller and you get a much better range and the weight won't show up on radar so you won't get messed with by the FAA

A quick question. You are a RC pilot as well. Here in South Africa my RC plane "pilot licence" include flying drone as drone is far easier. It is all with the same organisation SAMAA. Unless one fly drone commercially, then register with the local UAS department. Do you in the US need to register a drone from a separate organisation even if you have a Club RC plane pilot registration?

Very interesting video. I was hoping to see a short clip of the display of the newer drone (as you had in the 2016 clip) but I get it if creates a no-no for regulations for you. Was it allowable to put cameras on remote-controlled planes back in the day, and can remote-control airplanes have a "go-pro" camera on them now? Also, are they very noisy that people would notice them flying 70-80 feet over them? Thanks!

Too big of a leap from someone complained to finding you. It would be too hard to connect you to the complaint and they aren't going to search all YT drone footage videos looking for the one incident that may not even be posted. They lied and said someone complained just like cops will do. They most likely saw your video and then got your phone number by connecting the dots from there. They contacted you when you did nothing wrong. Everyone is now guilty of something until proven innocent. If someone drove past your house and smashed your mailbox and you got their plate number. It would be a lead but it wouldn't prove who did it because you didn't see the face of the driver. They aren't going to find you just from someone seeing a drone flying in the area. He was probably assuming it was a heavier drone that had to be registered and he was wrong. Bothering you for nothing. Much like license plate readers read all plates assuming everyone is doing something wrong. While the paranoid people watching everyone are doing everything dishonest! Unless you lied and they never really called.

I made my report like directed, and it all came down to the fact that because I could NOT identify the driver's face it was a lost cause with the police. Kind of a scary lesson to learn.

Josh Bishop why not? It's the law. Although it may be a dumb law it is still the law to register any quad copter/drone over .55 pounds.

      @ExtraFungus Před 7 lety

john inwi Read the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, section 336. The registration is not the law and not legal, the FAA is barred from making such regulations and is only allowed to enforce the rules outlined by section 336.

john inwi No problem, the whole situation is frustrating as even the AMA stabbed us in the back and isn't going to try to hold the FAA accountable. Then you have videos like this where the guy has a large audience but he's ignirant or unwilling to talk about the law. Luckily there are some pending law suits against the FAA that are likely to be won.

I personally think someone ratted you out. How would the FAA know about you and your CZcams videos? BTH, your video was title FAA Update, so what happen?

    • @davidstone1227

This may surprise you, but the government uses the internet, too. The FAA's charter is to keep the airways safe. Given that there are tons of idiots out there posting videos of themselves raping, beating and murdering folks, should it be any surprise that there would be tons of idiots posting drone videos showing illegal activity? It shouldn't be a huge stretch that there are folks who watch drone videos looking for illegal activity.
All the FAA dude needed to do was see a drone video. CZcams will tell you who posted it, the metadata will tell you IP address, etc., a court order to the ISP will produce the account holder records. Or, as he said, just Google the name of the video uploader, and find out that he has an online business card for his shop, which includes enough corroborating data to confirm that he has the right guy, and call the number on the card.
You didn't really think ANYONE online is anonymous anymore did you?

Now the EPA will be on your case for that "pond" on your land and try to say it's a wetland and make it a "Waters of the US" and take your land from you. Think that sounds crazy? It's happened lots of times. Hopefully Trump will dismantle that department.

Apparently some people have never run a business, had to sign the front of a check, had to hire people and put up with the byzantine communist/fascist regulations emitted by our dear leader government, or had their private property stolen by a totalitarian bureaucrat. Some people only sign the back of their checks and don't have any responsibilities beyond cashing checks paid for by the taxpayer. I know this is not anyone here, but there are some people like that somewhere out there over the rainbow. Just so everyone knows, I don't drink koolaid, red or blue. IMO.

Do you think that the new president will get involved and do away with this part of the FAA's authority? It seems a mighty ado about nothing! Show me an instance or two of gross neglect causing horrible loss of life or something worse than getting caught with your bathing suit off and I'll think about my attitude. Right now it seems that it's a lot of hooie. lol
