  • Steven Rinella scratches his spring turkey itch this year as he visits Wisconsin to call in some big eastern Toms with his buddy Jerod Fink. The guys also plan to do some bow fishing after dark so they can enjoy a real Midwest turkey and fish fry.

But, from your perspective and insight on hunting and why we hunt, I can see she is really getting a deeper understanding of what we do. She is seeing the connection with nature, and balance, as well as comradely and how important it is. I appreciate you helping a lot of us to pass on the outdoors to the next generation. Again, thank you!

Man, there’s nothing more exciting than a old tom that’s right there and he hangs beside a brush or tree and just stands. My daddy was a wonderful turkey hunter from the west side of Alabama in a little town called Silas. He never missed his bird he was after. He loved the thrill of a turkey hunt. I’m the same way. I killed my first with a 410 when I was seven. I was so freaking out at that age. Don’t know if you ever heard Rodger Ben Lee from coffeeville Alabama but when he was young my daddy taught him how to hunt and next we knew he had his own turkey hunting show. He never told anyone that I know of that my daddy taught him how to hunt. Rodgers daddy knew because my dad and Big Ben Lee was hunting and fishing friends. Rodger claimed that her learned everything on his own. He’s passed now for years but I talked to his son and when he found out that I was JR,s son he never talked to me again. I’m guessing he’s been confronted about my daddy teaching his dad to hunt. But I love watching your shows especially on turkey’s. Nothing like a big gobble right in front of you early in the morning just as they fly down. I’ve roasted turkeys a few times in my 64 year life and it’s exciting to be under their roosting tree before daylight. If you don’t bump them off their limbs before fly down. Having a tom walk a limb and strutting and gobbling every five seconds above your head gets your blood pumping. You should give that a try. I’d go out the evening before and follow the tom and his hens to roost then I’d back out and be back a couple hours before daylight so I could slowly and quitely slip in. Most was still there the next morning but I have come back to totally have them gone and not see them again for days. Who knows what bumped them during the night. Have fun, hey , kill a big tom for me. Season starts here in north eastern Georgia the middle of March and goes to the middle of may. I’m getting ready to go when it opens, lord’s willing the way my health is. Sorry for keeping you so long. Like talking turkey. Be safe, now go put some meat on the table.

Just saw your Wisconsin turkey / carp hunt. Fyi you need to grind that fish. One way we like boney fish is ground sucker patties. Grind sucker ( no worry w bones then) with onion, egg, saltines. Fry, put on a bun with salad dressing or mayo. :)

  • @averageeverydayfishermansh4501

I went to MO turkey hunting one year. We ended up going with some friends to a fry in the little town and they had 55 gallon drums cut in half and burning hot. They had fried squirrel, fried turkey, and fried catfish. Along with the fixings, I was in heaven and fat as a hog. Great people and new friends were made and the kinds of friends that you can only make in the hunting/fishing world.

You really make a person want to go turkey hunting! Something I’ve never done but always wanted to!
As far as the Buffalo fishing, ehh.
I’ll take salmon or cutthroats any day.
