@Paul Logan i think what you are missing is the relevance of a joke, how they made fun of stereotypes not re-enforcing stereotypes. True comedians know how to make the jokes relevant, today people do jokes to be mean spirited, case in point the comedian who played Krammer on Seinfeld when he went on that racist rift it was not comedy it was mean spirited. Also i will add, its not that networks wont air shows like this, its just that networks are cheap they find the magic formula to make money without spending money, they call it " reality Tv" which is anything but reality.

For all of you who are younger than 30, here's a quick run-down of the various references that you may not understand. Most of this material is likely to be lost on anybody who didn't follow pop culture of the time.
Note that there's many other very dated references and jokes mixed in to this episode -- I'm just covering the broad strokes.
"Downtown Julie Brown", a VJ on MTV back when they played music videos and hosted "Club MTV". Club MTV got notoriety as the show that jumpstarted the Milli Vanilli lipsync scandal. She would say "wubba wubba wubba" as her sign-out which was frequently referenced here.
"Michael Bolton" in a parody of "When a Man Loves a Woman", originally performed by Percey Sledge. This ended up being a huge single for Bolton and made him beloved by housewives all over. You may recognize Michael Bolton from the Lonely Island song Jack Sparrow
"MC Hammer" in a parody of "U Can't Touch This". This is probably one of the more accessible parodies. Before his downfall, MC Hammer was known for his high energy dance rap and wearing ridiculous outfits with parachute pants. Fun/sad fact: MC Hammer's "Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em" album that had "U Can't Touch This" is the best selling hip-hop record ever.
"Crystal Waters" in a parody of "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)". Waters, who ended up being a one hit wonder, had pretty big success on the charts with the song Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless). Despite trying to be a "message song", its chorus was a not-so-thought provoking "la da dee la da da" repeated over and over.
"Vanilla Ice" in a parody of "Ice Ice Baby". Another accessible parody. I'm sure everybody at this point knows who Vanilla Ice is and has heard Ice Ice Baby so I won't cover this one in any detail other than to say at the time this was pretty cutting edge satire.
"Prince" skit with Butt Out Jeans. This is primarily a reference to Prince performing at the 1991 MTV VMAs with assless jeans which was pretty shocking at the time.
"Paula Abdul" in a parody of "Promise of a New Day". Believe it or not, Paula Abdul was once a pretty popular pop star. She had gained noticeable weight in her video for Promise of a New Day and this is making fun of that. Hey, In Living Color was never known for its subtle or high brow humor.
Parody of LL Cool J's song "Mama Said Knock You Out" starring "Jimmy Walker". Jimmy Walker was in the 1970's sitcom "Good Times". His character introduced the catchphrase "dyn-o-mite!". He had little success after Good Times and this song references his attempts to resuscitate his career.
"Michael Jackson" in a parody of "Black or White". Black or White was the first single from Michael Jackson's Dangerous album. At this point his skin had lightened considerably from what it was before. The rarely seen full-length video was some 11 minutes long and ridiculously opulent with numerous celebrity cameos (including The Simspons). It was one of the first time many saw "morphing" being used in mainstream media. Anyway, the the video included an extended epilogue which is the primary focus of this parody. In the epilogue Jackson smashes up a car with a crowbar (in the original video the car had racist slogans and imagery on it) and does a lot of crotch grabbing. If you haven't seen it before, watch the original full-length version and bask in the sheer WTFness of it. I'm sure you can find it on CZcams, just make sure it's the 11 minute long version.

      5. Spot on, Paula was getting fat and her video was OBVIOUSLY stretched...she was asking to get roasted
      6. Oh I forgot M C Hammer...it was just hilarious for skinny Tommy to be wearing those pants, so he was the joke, not Hammer so much. Everyone wore those damn pants back then
      7. Sean Wayans being Jay Jay. He tried to be as funny as his brothers but it never worked on that show
      8. Oh we ALL thought it was funny as he{{ that Michael sang Black or White and looked so white. Black community loved him but gave him the side eye for that one...thus the punchline " I guess I am black " after getting arrested. Tommy did a great job.

As my Dad had lost faith in SNL in the mid 80s,as had most,I was introduced to In Living Color when it came out before I EVER saw SNL.
The talent they had was amazing as was ALL of their Musical Parodies!!!!
I quoted Homie Da Clown and Fire Marshal Bill in Kindergarten. This show was brilliant and I miss it in the same way I miss the first 5 years of MadTv!!! Excellent writing, innovative, and on the mark socially!!!!

I'm gonna be honest I love dark humor but this was too offensive for me, most of those jokes being about lies, Mj didn't make his skin light and he isn't a pedo

@@Steve14579 Thank you and Indeed! Comedy is no longer humorous when hurtful and libelous falsehoods are televised for the world to consume. The "virgin" reference seems potentially related to the 90's Oprah interview. Didn't Michael Jackson inform us candidly that he suffered from vitiligo skin disease within that interview?? Imagine expressing the vulnerability of a medical condition on national tv, only for the public to refuse to believe you . :(
& My extensive and thorough research also informs of MJ's innocence regarding said allegations. R.I.P. Michael ❤️
