  • After trying the recent re-release of this game on Nintendo Switch (titled "Monkey King: Master of the Clouds"), I wanted to check out the original arcade version and see what differences I could find.
I would definitely say the arcade version is more forgiving than the re-release. A few changes I noted: bosses are now invincible until they being their first attack pattern and also seem to have more vitality. Also, the scoring system is changed, and probably for the better. If you take a death in any level in the re-release, the end of level bonus is cut in half from 100,000 points to 50,000 points. This makes checkpoint "milking" for high scores not really work, as it does in the arcade release.
As for the game itself, it's pretty enjoyable. It has a very generous in-game autofire after you pick up the "A" powerup, which helps preserve hands/wrists. It's also pretty short, with the whole game taking about 15 minutes to complete and no second loop to worry about. The difficulty picks up at a natural pace but spikes at the 4th boss. The last boss is also a challenge, as it should be.
Gameplay was recorded with WolfMAME v.216 using default difficulty. As with all my runs - no TAS (tool assistance), cheats, hacks, or save states are used. INP file available on MARP: replay.marpirc....
    Thanks for watching!

Was just on the second boss when one of his random bolts came down at an extreme angle. Dropped 15 lives getting through that stage with no powerups, so by then I’d had enough. Frustrating. Good play!

      Thank you!
I hear you on the second boss, the diagonal shots can be hard to see. If I die there I'm more likely to reset and try again because of losing the auto shot ability and the wider shots when getting powered up.

Nice work Pete! I used to love this on the Master System as a kid, you know the console that dominated the NES in Europe :) That spread shot seems like an effective weapon. And yeah 15mjns is a good length for a game :)

Yeah, maybe that spread is a bit too powerful. :) I missed a lot of great games on Master System growing up, only knew 1 person that had one.

Excellent work! The checkpoints in this really are annoying.

Thank you, @JGB! I basically treated this like a 1 life game... If I wasn't going to get the no death clear, I started over. Playing some of the checkpoints on level 4 or 5 without the rapid shot upgrade would have definitely been the end of my hand and wrists.
      Thanks for watching, appreciate it!

I noticed this original one looks a lot different than the sega version

I looked at the re-release of this one for the PS4, the aspect ratio on it seems off, the arcade and PS4 versions seem to have a wider field of view on it, with the score on top of the screen, while the re-release has the score to the side of the screen, and the boxed in area itself where the gameplay is, looking far narrower. This seems to make enemies be right on top of you quickly before you can react. I don't own a PS4, but I'll stick with the version I do have on the PS2, by way of one of the Taito Memories compilations (I own all 4 of those).

Yeah, the re-release on PS4 and Switch are really different than the source material. Those Taito Memories / Legends are much better versions, in my opinion.

this game has the same wicked difficulty curve of Gradius III; you die in later stage, you might as well turn off the switch.

Cette versión de Cloud Master, est une insulte a tous les vrais Cloud Master, Qui se battent sans relache depuis 1988 afin de terminé ce jeux presque impossible…
Les vrais Cloud Master se reconnaitront
“ I am with the resistance”

You scored nearly 700,000 but there is room for a billion+ score? Thats wierd.

Yeah, very strange. The Japanese Arcadia/Gamest record is less than a million points, just checked it.

Same developer and released in the same era, I'd guess.

@@Pete_Hahn This game and Insector X were actually done by Hot-B, not Taito.
