I'm a huge fan of arcade and console games from the late 80's to mid 90's. I prefer run-n-gun, action games, platformers, horizontal (side-scrolling) shmups, beat'em-ups and fighting games. I also get into retro-inspired modern games, so those may show up on my channel from time to time.
I'm hoping to achieve "1CC" (1 credit / 1 coin clear) on games that I get into and share them with the gaming world on my channel. Similarly, in the case of console games the goal is no continues used, i.e. no "game over" without beating the game.
On some games I may have a high-score focus, but most games the ALL clear is the main priority.
I strive to show strategies that can be used for other to incorporate into their game. The highest possibly video and audio quality is a priority, along with presenting games in the correct aspect ratio. TAS (too assistance), save states or cheats will not be used in any of the runs on my channel - all legit gameplay.
I hope you enjoy my content!

Heavy Unit (Arcade, 1988) Completed No Deaths, 1CC - Loop 1 [4K]
I stumbled across the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive version of this game randomly when going through the ranking list of all Mega Drive shmups from @Shmup Junkie (czcams.com/video/RLB4W-8pZos/video.html). I was initially drawn to it for it's mechanic that lets you swap between an agile fighter jet craft or a bigger and much more powerful mech suit.
After playing it a bit, I found out it was a port of an arcade game published by Taito, so I wanted to check that out. I found out that Kaneko developed it before they published their own titles. After I realized this, I could see definite similarities with their first shmup, Air Buster, that came 2 years after Heavy Unit. The ship in Heavy Unit looks pretty similar to your craft in Air Buster, aside from the rear wing.
I mainly only used the mech suit because of it's insanely powerful shots and how many bullets you can tank when you have the shield / barrier power up (more than ten!). The hitbox for the mech suit is deceptively small, much smaller than you'd think. I'd guess it's about this: imgur.com/BOjGgZR
I might have made it through the first loop unscathed, but the second loop quickly took me out (I was unprepared, since the Genesis port has only 1 loop). Lots more enemies that weren't there in loop 1, and some enemies were releasing suicide bullets when defeated, as well.
You might be wondering why I'm not moving for a stretch of time at 13:30 of the video - my joystick's USB cable had wiggled out of the port! It took a second for me to realize this and scramble to get it plugged back in. Thankfully, my shield saved me from the blue barrier I ran into before I regained control.
Gameplay was recorded with wolfMame .261; 15Hz autofire was used, game settings left at default dip values.
Thank you for watching, as always!

Here's a recent 1-credit / no continues run of the PC Engine version of Air Zonk (called PC Denjin: Punkic Cyborgs), played on the MiSTer FPGA. I decided to play the overseas version because quite a few things were changed and made more kid-friendly for the TG-16 release. A few of them are really obvious, like the fully charged bomb being a giant poop-shaped projectile being changed to a giant ...

I decided to look into this beat'em up when Galloping Ghost Arcade added it to their floor a couple of months ago. I was pleasantly surprised to find the game is mechanically very solid and lots of fun - well done, Irem! I chose to check out the Japanese region version for a couple of reasons. First, this is the version Galloping Ghost has on their floor - so if I want to attempt a 1CC run ther...

This game was added to the floor of Galloping Ghost Arcade as a recent "Monday Mystery" game. After I tried it earlier this week while there, I was hooked - this is definitely a HAN game! It plays a bit like Crime City mixed with Ninja Warriors, with maybe a dash of Rush 'n Attack / Green Beret. While not very hard to clear, getting the no death run took a little bit of practice on the last lev...

Here's another clear of a short and straight-forward Taito hori shmup. This is the "dedicated" rom, which is slightly harder and plays a bit different than the US (aka "conversion") variant. The first loop is pretty tame until the last level. The final boss has some attacks that are really hard to dodge due to your hitbox size. The second loop really kicks things into high gear, though. As a big fan of the Darius series of games, I've shied away from tackling Darius 2 arcade in the past for a couple reasons. First, the game has a reputation of being unfairly balanced against the player. Due to losing literally everything (all weapon / bomb / shield levels) on death, dying at almost any point in the game is essentially a game over unless you're just starting or near the end of ...

Megablast is an obscure horizontal shooter that Taito released in 1989. It's a pretty short game to clear, and also fairly simple. Your ship starts with pods that fire in the 4 cardinal directions, giving you a lot of firepower to take down enemies. I do like the soundtrack, and references to other Taito games / characters as mid-bosses was cool. The story is pretty crazy and filled with silly ...

Originally a mobile game, this game was released in arcades in 2011...but in China only. It's essentially a remake of Famicom / NES Contra with a few additions. There are 2 new characters that play differently than the series standard characters Bill Rizer and Lance Bean. Players can carry all weapon types and swap between them with a 3rd button. I found out about this game when Galloping Ghost...

I miss this game. Used to play it when I was a kid. Brings me back to my childhood days though.....
Checking in 2024 Any progress?
The boss fight at 9:40 reminds me of a line from the Frantics' "Last Will and Temperament": "And to my cat, Mittens, I bequeath my vast, entire BOOT TO THE HEAD!"

@@Pete_Hahn Oh okay, that's possible! Same at 0:19 - "Empty crevale"? But otherwise, great playthrough 👌
Must be nice to get the fatalities to work every single time. I never could get the fatalities to work half the time.
I can get most of them pretty consistently, the key is be sure to hold the buttons specified; this keeps your character from jumping. You can also stand at practically any distance when inputting the finisher, FYI. Good luck!
@@Pete_Hahn do you hold or tap the buttons?
@@nibora7953 you first hold the buttons down, do the joystick inputs - keep the buttons held down the whole time until the finisher starts to work

This game may have the wildest sprite designs in retro video game history! 😄 and what was up with the extends towards the end of the game? You went from 0 to 2 to 9 in like 20 seconds. 😂
yeah, the crazy sprite designs and weird weapons are what drew me to the game originally. The extends must be from the huge point bonuses from the last couple of sub-bosses, especially the green guy - he gives 5.5M points himself and extends are every 700k.
Did you use a turbo control? i can't beat this game on xbox for Master achievement, so i only want to know, thanks for your reply :)
Hi, I didn't use any turbo or autofire for this run. It might look like it because of how fast the rate of fire gets when I picked up the second machine gun powerup just before the helicopter in level 1. The second time you get any weapon it powers it up, and for the machine gun it makes it the best weapon in the game, in my opinion.
@@Pete_Hahn thanks man, last night finally beat this game and i agree, machine gun best weapon in this game, thanks again :)
@@edgardoguerrero7759 nice, congrats on beating it!
I refuse to buy anything from Terarin until they update the PC versions of their games to be on par with the switch versions. Terarin releases inferior versions on PC then updates the graphics and game balance on Switch. They need to stop this practice! It is disrespectful to PC players!
I hear you, I guess it's a trade off for getting the game earlier than the console players. But it would be nice to have them in parity, and also maybe share a high score leaderboard so the rankings were global.
Good stuff! That death just before the end of W was heartbreaking, because it meant you had to just tank the hits from the boss, and you're underpowered for that last fight. But you pulled it off.
Thank you, much appreciated! Was hoping to not have to fight Green Coronatus with just the pea shooter, but since I had all those extra lives I survived him...

I remember playing this a lot at the arcade. One glitch we exploited was on one of the ladders in the 3rd stage where you could climb to a certain point then jump off and get 1UP every time then repeat.
I think what you're referring to is the 1up I got at approx. 9:40 in the video...it can be gotten as many times as you want by just going down that ladder then coming back up (just have to be wary of the rocks each time). Nice little secret, very cool that you found it and exploited it back in the day when it saved you actual money! 😇

How do you connect the supergun to OSSC and to pc?
The supergun is a HAS version 3.1 which has an RGB out via a Sega Genesis 2 scart cable. The OSSC has an HDMI out to my capture card to get it to my PC after it's been scaled / line multiplied.

Great gameplay, a lot different from most 1cc's, people tend to abuse the pet attack while you went for a more melee approach. Congrats!
thank you very much! The kamikaze squirrel attack is great and is definitely the way to get the fastest kills. It doesn't give you much in the way of score, especially compared to using the whip attack or the multi-uppercut special. Terarin likes to update his games for console release; are you playing on Switch? It could also be that this is an earlier version of the game if you're playing on PC / Steam. Why use just machine gun is spread gun better?
But never less ur the best perfect run❤❤❤❤
The machine gun has a much better rate of fire on this version of the game (compared to spread), so it takes much less time to kill stationary targets that are in the tunnel stage. I like the spread gun better for some areas where enemies are not stationary, like in the final level where the mouths shoot out their projectiles. Thanks for checking out my video!
