    Gyalshing District’s hallowed Hungri Goenpa is the seat of Pawo Hungri who was recognised by Gyalwa Lhatsun Chenpo as the first emanation of Terton (Dharma treasure revealer) Rigdzin Goedemchen (1337-1408 AD).
    The great terton Rigdzin Goedemchen was an emanation of Nanam Dorje Dudjom, a minister of Tibetan Emperor Tsenpo Trisong Detsen. The emperor sent Nanam Dorje Dudjom to Nepal to invite Ugyen Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) to Tibet. He eventually became one of Guru Rinpoche’s twenty-five principal disciples.
    Pawo Hungri is revered as one among the Ugyen Guru Rinpoche anointed “Shidag” or “principal guardian deities” of the upper, middle and lower regions of Denjong / Sikkim, who include:
    1)- Dzonga Taktse (Khangchen-Dzonga);
    2)- Pawo Hungri; and
    3)- Yabdue, the guardian of the southern gate of Denjong.
    His Eminence Lachung Dungyue Rinpoche, Chhoedten Nyima Rinpoche Kyabje Jikme Namgyal is the ninth in direct descent from Pawo Hungri. Rinpoche la is hence the ninth Pawo Hungri and the current emanation of Terton Rigdzin Goedemchen.
    Hungri Monastery (1922 A.D)
    Hungri Monastery lies between Silnon and Yuksam.
    History:Earlier the Lepcha Lamas established it with a small Lhakhang. Later, it was dismantled and upon the same site, a new monastery was erected as a branch monastery of Pemayangtse in 1922 by Tamatam Lama who was a Ponlob deputed from Pemayangtse Monastery.The Gonpa retains the stone walls and is one of the very few Gonpa retaining such type of structure. An interesting thing to see in this gonpa is a small stone Altar attached to the right exterior wall of the Gonpa.
