6th grade. I wanted curls. My mom had my baby twin brothers and she was NOT doing my hair. Sooo, I took the Lustrasilk setting lotion and rolled my own bangs and crown on a dozen or more itty bitty perm rods.
Not my whole head.
Just the top.
I guess I was going for a soft curl and thought the bottom would hang down softly on my shoulders.

When I took those perm rods out in the morning, I was *horrified*! I had a straight ball of tight poodle fur atop my head.
I burst into tears. I ran to my mother who bust out laughing.
I couldn't catch my breath from sobbing.
She still wasn't helping me. 😭
Thank God, a moment of brilliance occurred and I thought to straighten it out with a curling iron. Praise Him!🙏🏾🙌🏾
I turned that frizzy stiff ball into some cute curls. One of my favorite school pics. I wore an olive button blouse. 💁🏾
My various school picture experiences is why my son's picture day outfit is picked out 3 weeks in advance. The shirt was bought special w picture day in mind. You won't catch me slipping on picture day bc my mom all the way dropped the ball. 😒

xandria20 omggg I had a similar experience! In hs but luckily not for picture day. My fam forced me to go to school with my hair like that. My sis kept telling me it wasn't so bad. Best believe I didn't see that chick from the minute we were dropped off

In second grade, they took the school pictures in the afternoon, after recess...why?! Fly-aways everywhere but my mom still bought the picture.
Yes, girl- scheduling my 2nd grade class pictures after recess was straight sabotage!! My mom had hot comb-pressed my hair & curled it the night before, then styled it in a sleek "Tootie" mushroom with a braided ponytail on top. Sent my tomboy tail to school in a cutesy matching skirt/blouse combo, but that didn't keep me off the monkey bars... My sleek "Tootie" mushroom & ponytail had swelled into a nuclear cloud with a broom handle by the time they snapped my picture. I was still hella cute, tho!

My absolute worst picture day was in first grade. My mom picked out something for me to wear but i wanted to choose for myself, so i told her i would wear the dress in the closet that was white with a blue checkered apron (idk what i was thinking). So flash forward to the next fay and during lunch kids were laughing and pointing at me saying "Goldilocks! Goldilocks!" But i faced it and took the picture. When i got home i looked at the back of the dress and the tag said Party City.

This definitely took me back down memory lane. Oh the sadness and disgust on my mom's face when she opened the photo envelope and I looked nothing like how she sent me to school. Barrettes missing, ponytails lopsided, clothes hanging off, etc. For some reason my school district thought it was a good idea to take pictures after recess...Big mistake LOL. I had the sauce in high school tho. I think my senior picture might still be in the window at Fox Studios 😉

Picture day when my mom went out of town was the WORST until I could dress myself. My dad knew nothing of the latest hot fashions and would shove us into whatever itchy scratchy full coverage situation he could find. Not to mention, it seems that in Nigerian households, a shiny child is a healthy child.
My dad had me out in these 2nd grade streets with a white tee under a denim overalls LONG skirt, which was under a red cardigan. He SLATHERED my face in Vaseline, as if to show my mother I was appropriately cared for, and to show the family back home that I was eating good. I won't describe the shoes, let's just say I didn't wear name brand until well into high school. And my hair... Chei my hair 😭

My Mother got involved on EVERY picture!!!!! We wore uniforms from Primary school on till you finish and went to University, so clothes choice was not a thing in school pictures but hair and makeup was something you could express yourself with and Jaysus did some of us do that!!! The 70’s and 80’s were a unique time. Lastly I feel like it aways rained on picture day which is not a surprise in the UK so frizz was on fleak!!! 😂😱

My senior year high school attendance was horrible. I was just over it and determined to miss as many days possible without breaking rules and or truancy law. The number of days allowed at that time were 15, I think, and of course I went over. Anyway when senior picture day rolled around I had no idea and got a heads up the morning of. I went to school late as hell and needless to say I looked the hottest of hot messes. At the time I was upset for taking such a bad senior photo, but now it is laughable. By the way, I didn't smile in my photo, so I looked half sleep and mad, which I was that morning.
Also to add I did graduate, following mandated after school detention and attending a Behavior Intervention Center for more detention. So PSA time, go to school kids, like everyday.

I have one photo of me from 8th grade, and I was wearing a red and black velvet dress that my mom got me from a trip to Chinatown in San Francisco (because 13-year-old me had no concept of appropriation), and I had a big ol' toothy smile on my (the kind of smile where your teeth are showing), and all you could see was metal, because I had braces at the time. Now I know why my dad called me Jaws when I had braces, because I looked like the James Bond villain! 😂
Picture day at my school is always the first day of school, also we don't have air-conditioning. Oh and they are always taken like right in the middle of the day.
