I get travel for work and sometimes they also buy a ticket for my girlfriend but they do not always buy the upgrade. So most of the time I try to get her an upgrade with my miles that I accumulated throughout the years. If not I fly eco and she goes business class its not a big deal lol

I understand Stephen A's point, but I'm 100% with Dan. What is clearly apparent is that Dan has a HEALTHY RESPECT for money. There would nothing worse than to fall on hard times, only to lament the fact that you were needlessly spending exorbitant sums of money on FIRST CLASS plane tickets.
Bro, my wife would absolutely KILL me if I were to spend $10,000 on a first class plane ticket regardless of how much money we make. Grant it, my wife is pretty easy to please when it comes to spending money on her. For her, a date night is coffee at the local coffee shop and a walk together lol. Now, I do tend to do more than that for a date night but, my point is that she's pretty easy to please.

To be fair he got business class tickets and not first class tickets. They would cost more at the airline he flew (Lufthansa). But yeah Lufthansa is one of the few airlines that frequently gives out business and first class tickets for bidding either with cash or miles and it is a good way to maybe snag a last minute upgrade
