He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Police in 2003, the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2005, and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013. Stewart is nearly 70 and he almost looks the same as he did 30 yrs ago with white hair. That's what the passion of the human spirit can do! I hope he's around for another 30yrs :)
It's because even though he's a rock star, he didn't allow himself to get dragged down by the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. As soon as the tour ends, he's back home being a Dad. Having seven kids tends to keep you grounded.
Simply the best đ
He really nailed it - too many drummers think of themselves as "a drummer". You have to think of yourself as (and actually BE) "a musician". Learn theory. Learn to read clefs, not just rhythms. Learn a melodic instrument. Even if you only ever want to play the drums, that extra knowledge will make you a better drummer too.
That's the kinda limiting mindset I used to have that drove me to learn another instrument. Going on nearly 2 years of playing guitar next March and I've never felt more free as a musician.
Definitely give another instrument a try, doesn't matter what it is. You won't regret it. It doesn't mean you won't be as great as a drummer which was a fear that held me back from doing it until I finally just went for it. It just means you want to grow which true musicians are always enthusiastic about.
I love this frigging guy.
Secret to playing, as Stewart is trying to define, is to learn and hear the underlying rhythmic 'pulses' that drive a song; and these pulses (the subdivisions of the beat, called, 'partials') can change at any time; but, also know that when you group these underlying pulses into 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, 6's, 7's, 8's . . . and even leaving out some of these 'partials' (called, 'rests') to create angular rhythms - these can really make the music way more interesting to the listener AND the musicians. Each 'musician' can also change the pulses against what the others are playing . . . but, BE CAREFUL, one must do so WITH TASTE.
Mr Copeland still inspiring like 30 years ago. Love that man!
One of the greatest advise you'll get from a master player.
Agree. I rather would take advice and lessons from an expert whos doing that for half a century than a student who just popped in
Stewart is THE definition of đ!!!đ
Stewart Copeland needs to do a MasterClass! Anyone concur?
Absorb To me a really Old, and arthritic Guy I try and play guitar. This is a master class.
I think the "Joe" in this story may have been named... "Sting."
I've always loved that song that goes, *"AAHHH AAHHH AAHHH - OHHH OHHH OHHH!"* @ 1:10 đ
sounds like the chorus of a kick ass NIRVANA song worth a lot in royalties! đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
Man this was more than just a drum session this was a personal drum session by a cool ass dude I just don't have the words to explain people like him great teacher of his craft. Love the Police n Stewart....this is what I would call the art of drumming without drumming.
I know Copeland mainly from the Spyro game series (I've been playing the original trilogy since I was 4 years old) and his work creating the soundtrack for those games is iconic, absolutely brilliant!!! I know each and every track from the 2nd and 3rd games by heart, the soundtrack of my childhood.....
Same for me. Except I was 5. And I think it ruined music for me. I was just unable to enjoy other music because the spyro soundtrack was so good.
Just imagine STEWART COPELAND telling you that you are not just a Drummer, you are a MUSICIAN. I know this is at least two years down the line yet Thanks for Uploading x!
How lucky are those few to have been chosen for this masterclass.
Great advice from the legend himself.
Thanks for the video đ
Stewart Copeland is a beautiful badass.
It must be great to have him as a parent
Totally. He seems like a good guy.
Always a treat to hear his insight unapologetically a drummer yet always a Musician first đ€đŒđ€
Thatâs wisdom to penetrate the heart⊠The musicians proverb of Stewart Copeland⊠đđŒđŒđ€đžđčđ·âŠđ„
Copeland is a god
Stewart Copland was one of my major influencers on my playing. I learned the difference between playing with a reggae drums and Stewart Copelands's drumming made much more sense. Stingalingadingdong was going to take that reggae feel out if the music. I loved Stewart's drumming even when sloppy on purpose.
Sting's next project was kind of not even rock and roll. That was his music. Good music nonetheless. Stewart was putting the newest style into the drumming. This was kind of from the punk era where you could mash a little.
Sage advice. I've got some drummer buddies who've learned guitar and bass who tell me that after playing other instruments, going back to the drums feels fresh. They're also making a nice living doing studio gigs on more than one instrument.
Love this man!
Great communicator & character offering a lifetime of experience in just a few minutes.đ
What a wonderful person!
Stewart. Is. The. Man.
Brilliant advice!!
I've been expanding into reading music, composing and producing. Never thought I'd "outgrow Rock and roll" but yes, SUCH excellent advice! Be a full-rounded musician to live the life we love!
call me đ
Hi, Carmel! Notice the guy in the hat in the front row?
This was So Cool!
This is seriously good. Thank you!!
Supporting Player. Always good to remember that as a drummer. To me thats what makes the difference between a 'drummer' and a musician. Took me 20 years and old age to figure it out lol.
I wish this guy was my drum teacher. Idc how much it would cost.
beautifully explained
Beautiful message....
Hi ,i'm Kieran,55yr old drummer, played live 1978-90,retired to concentrate on family and career. Now retired and back into drumming for the love of it.You young drummers ,listen to this man, this is wisdom which is not for sale.lucky us.Heff
A doo-doo-doo...A da-da-da....half the publishing!
I love him too and I'm not a drummer. I'm a singer and a lyricist and have studied letters, poetry, synonyms, antonyms, taken singing classes, guitar, everything but drums. OK with panning out but there's other stuff to study, it's not that easy but hey,go for it, why not?
Paul McCartney figured that out. He plays multiple instruments, and covering other aspects of music making.
Really good advice!
Te amo copeland!
WELL SAID!
7? Congrats!
He's right, at one point I began learning to play the xylophone to learn to play melodies but I wished I'd learned to play th piano to be able to compose and write songs...
Heâs right about publishing. The song writing, I learned about this back in 2003 when a friend of mine in Los Angeles Dated Jim Kerr of simple minds, I asked her how Jim got so rich, her answer was: song publishing
some people get lucky .... some work for the employer i work for đ
Paul McCartney recognized that early on also. That you want to get into music publishing.
Cool
Always got something interesting to say
truth !!
Gotta say mans passionate about drums
Actually in the case of Rush, Neil Peart made 1/3 of song revenue after expenses just like Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee. From the beginning, they agreed to split money equally to make their music the central focus. Indeed, that was rare. The Police, just like several famous bands, fought bitterly over revenue as well as divisive music decisions. Still, Stewart Copeland is a millionaire but not remotely as rich as Dave Grohl due to publishing royalties and concert revenue contracts.
Those drums sound pretty good.
They also cost pretty good monetas, thats why
That's the Tama Star Series brand. Don't know if it's made of bubinga or maple though...
@@IAmInfinitus208 I was being sarcastic, since he didn't even play them in this video.
lol he was just waiting for his chance to name various wood đ€Łđ€Ł

3 words:
YES I CAN
amén!
Yes it also helps if your brother has connections with major record companies and your bass player can write catchy songs.
and just has to be one of the greatest drummers to ever play the instrument, im sure that came easy?? things fall your way........
someone in a comment section needs a hug.... imagine that !
I PLAY 5 INSTRUMENT..AND I NEED TO PLAY THEM..SOMETIME IF I CAN'T FIND A DRUMMER OR BASS PLAYER 4 A SONG IN MY HEAD ..I JUST DO IT....ALWAY I GOT GOOD IN MIXING..ARRANGING MY IDEA TOO. MR. COPELAND IS A GREAT TEACHER.

Learn bass. Double your jam and gig opportunities. Iâve learned more about music theory playing bass than any other instrument. Great advice on drummers singing and writing lyrics.
Best drum video ever and it doesn't even involve playing the drums. Drummers need to make themselves valuable in their band because you are the most replaceable person. Drums should never be your only instrument
actually it worked out well for neil peart đ ( yes i get it .. neil was a freakshow )
â@@MM1717mm Neil also wrote the lyrics, so he was doubly valuable in Rush
But there is also this:
czcams.com/video/9m5tFqmAfe8/video.html
If you want to be a musician, you need to try as many instruments as poss. And select the one that suits you. If? you can sing and write melodies or lyrics as well, that is a bonus.
If you select drums over bass, you don't have to stop playing bass. Or what ever instruments involved in your journey.
According to a few websites, Copeland is worth approx $80-90mil usd so I think he's doing ok.
copeland is worth it all ... plus he should get half of what gene simmons has made by duping everyone into thinking hes a musician
@@MM1717mm Copeland was very lucky he was in a band with a guy named Sting because he could've ended up in a punk band that went nowhere commercially.
Gene Simmons is a good player, singer and song writer. Sting is phenomenal to put into perspective. But Kiss has several great songs from the 70's and early 80's written by Simmons. After they took off their makeup they switched to a really kinda lame straight 8th notes on the bass (that was an 80's thing for many) and the songs were mediocre at the very best.
They also released the equivalent of 9 studio albums from 1974-1979 all going at least Gold. You don't get that with being crappy in the 70's when the majority of music was very well done.
Gene Simmons and Kiss made a lot of their money in merchandise and licensing. They kind of pushed the industry into levels not seen before. They basically sold out is what I'm saying.
Stewart is right, you need to know how the cake is carved up in order to succeed.
Lol that kid on the far right.
Ted Danson is a really good drummer!
Where was this video when I was 19? Oh yeah CZcams didn't exist.
bruh đ same
I donât understand how him and sting manage to look years younger then they are
You say they're Vampires?

he's right, but for a few of those guys, i have a feeling it's not what they wanted to hear.

@chris monk Spot on! :-)
Setting yourself up for success??? Find yourself a STING. You'll be fine.

Music is a sideline...learn a trade
How is it possible to be this stupid?
@@nox4298 đ€Ł
youre not entirely wrong .. but i dont ever want to attend a lecture on drywall ... everrrrrr
Don Henley getting on the mic is an exception & so are most of the singing drummers I work with the other 99% should stay away from a mic like a Vampire stays away from a Cross.
I can play drums and guitar Ok but the bass is easier that's not a knock but I sing also đ€ why does that sound so familiar.......
fun fact: the lyricist of chicarron only got 40 percent b/c the words are so dumb
ive loved this guy since i was 13 ... and now im starting to look older and have less energy than him đđđ bruh !!
I see why Copeland clashed with Sting over lyrics. The problem is that Sting wrote all their major hits and Copeland only wrote crap. Stewart should have focused on drums.
lol what have u written that we might all know as well as any police song ??
â@@MM1717mm I've written several books on prophecy, and my website has been #1 for 25 years. What have you written??
The music industry sucks
... unless u sold 80 million albums back in the day
I thought this dude was English.
Read his book... he's an American that traveled the world... his father was in the government.
Timestamp at 1:34 - itâs all fine and dandy if youâre a man in a band but try being an award winning creative writer and then 2/3 members of The Police stole my poetry or drum song to use in theirs. How is that fair to me? They are hungry pirates. And they get to laugh at me when people donât believe me. Sometimes it makes me very angry.
I wrote more than 65% of Never Alone in Here, (SC), I Canât Stop Thinking About You, Sad Trombone (Sting) and Lucid Dreams (in Juice Wrld and Shape of My Heart/Sting). Whoever doesnât believe me is a misogynist jerkoff who is going to H.E. Double hockey sticks.
Stew sounds pissed. Talk faster so EVERYONE will glaze over.
theres always an asshole no matter how brilliant the lesson .. buy a personality, Skippy
If I could just find a singing drummer, we are talking the least existent musician on earth.
