  • I'm not a big fan of pushing a hand mower around, I usually let sheep do the work - • Lawnmower won't start?... I can't keep the sheep in town so when I was offered this old non running ride on mower I couldn't refuse.

I don’t have the skills you possess but if ever I was doing maintenance on my vehicles or trying to make something, my son was always there wanting to help. I had a wonderful old neighbour who was a retired builder but made wooden toys and furniture for charity. He was a beautiful and tolerant man and my son would disappear for hours visiting and helping him.

To be honest thats the only machine a customers given me that was actually worth the time bringing it home and fixing. The other stuffs been a free scrap removal service for them when I really get into looking at it ! I'll pass on the wasps, as well... I can deal with spiders and snakes but not the flying stingers. Nice find here... I did a similar mower back in the 80s, even replacing the tires to a tractor tread to cope with the rougher terrain on the rear reaches of the property. It was all belt-driven, as well, and I recall replacing a pulley and several guide-pins (located outboard of the pulleys) that were worn and allowing belts to jump off. It's rather satisfying to bring something like this back to life. Thanks for a nice flashback.

I do not presume to teach grandma how to suck eggs, so a couple of points from experience. i) It is worth drilling a hole, tapping it and fitting a grease nipple on the blade bearing housing. Just make sure it points in the right direction when installed. ii) A larger hole on the cutter deck fitted with male hose fitting. When flushed, use your sucky-blow to dry it, then a dribble of your favourite no-rust goo, also with blade/s spinning. Wet grass clippings are almost as bad as cow shit and fertiliser for rust. You know all this, Marty, but someone else might take a tip.

Grease nipples for deck bearings are usually on bottom side and if not you can sometimes drill and tap your own in if they are coned bearing holder design. You can also lift steering rack up and jog a few teeth one way to make it turn sharper one way for almost zero turn capabilities. Just have to do that and readjust steering rods. First add on should be a drink holder.

Maaate, Something soothing about getting a ride-on working well.
    I learned a few things today :-)
I paid a few hundred for a similar machine with a side thrower deck, Same controls just older.
Id been looking at buying new but at 2 grand for a cheapie I went the 2nd hand route instead, splurged on a Cup holder and a year later the old 8hp Briggs gave up the ghost (Well threw a leg outta bed actually) which vindicated my 18hp big block conversion lol.
This led to Belts, grease, de rusting, new fuel hoses and control cables but the battery box under the seat was too small for the big banger battery so I temp strapped a car battery to the left mudguard after uprating the battery cables.
It still look terrible with the original owner doing a bad bad paint job and the front cowl with the headlight is cracked and cable tied in a few spots BUT she cuts my half acre into a bowling green finish from 6 inches high and means im not pushing a mower for 4 hours sucking in engine exhaust. (Which makes my Pall Malls taste awful)
Paint and body will be next after the Spring service and grease n oil change and im thinking Polestar Blue with Fat GT stripes.
Next job however is an Amber strobe on a stick for when im mowing the road reserve and remounting the car battery low on the rear where some optimistic designer added a towball mount.........
More Traction cant hurt and a lower center of gravity is kinda important too.

If the cutting deck spindles are anything like the ones on my mower, they do have grease nipples, but also have sealed bearings at the top and bottom. Pumping grease in is for the placebo effect only.
The bearings can be driven out and replaced, if you can get them in the right size. I got new spindles, pushed the bearings out and tore the seals out on the inside face. Now any grease actually makes it to the bearing surfaces.

Grease still prevents the shaft from rusting I guess.

These v-belts can take quite a beating, had a Bedford CF long time ago, with the replaced and misaligned generator the belt had ran 2/3 of its way inside out, kept running like that for over 400km on the Autobahn, before I could replace it...
Great job on that mower, thx for showing!

Hi Marty really enjoy your channel. I use to work on anything like you. I don't mean to tell you how to suck eggs but to stop that deck belt jumping off it is recommend engage the deck at slightly higher rev's than and idle (belt not so sloppy) plus make sure your belt is as near to horizontal as possible. Also always mow at WOT as this will cut cleaner and throw the grass right into your catcher. I was also surprized you didn't drive up onto some ramps and sharpen the blades with a grinder easier than taking the deck off....I know

Good score for free. Years ago I had the black version,MTD Yard Machine, also 20hp I think. Got it cheap when it was near new and the people let the battery die over winter and they wanted to use a push mower anyway. I glued an adjustable double drink holder to the fender and was very happy mowing with cold beers in koozies on a hot day. Sold the mower but kept the holder! It will go on a garden tractor if I ever find the right deal on one.

Love it! your videos gave me the confidence to work on bigger projects! I still buy these old lawn tractors fix them up and give them away or sell them to people who need them but cant afford newer ones. Nine times outta 10 its a 15$ part and an hour of work and they fire up. Those old single and twin engines just love to work.
