#houseofthedragon #gameofthrones #mythologyexplained
Thanks for watching lads! (☞゚ヮ゚)☞ Are you planning on watching House of the Dragon? If you are, do you have high expectations? If you're not, why? Let me know! I'm genuinely curious because this was the first time I revisited the universe since the finale and I didn't realize how much I missed it.
I’m absolutely watching it!! Can’t wait! I re-read the books a lot 💫
I'm going to watch it and give it the chance to redeem my trust again after that last season of GOT lol
Game of thrones ended too badly to trust HBO with another fantasy show. And GRRM can't finish his books to save his life. I have zero confidence, and The early reviews are decidedly mixed.
I am excited, but also a bit apprehensive about it
I'm surprised that The Flight Of Dragons (1982) and the book it was based on wasn't included in this essay.
Venom feels like it's burning you, and ancient/medieval texts refer to venom as 'burning breath' and similar, which was eventually transliterated/mistranslated as flaming breath.
The dance for Chinese New Year doesn’t feature dragons. It’s called a lion dance. There is a dragon dance but it’s very different. Pedantic yes, but feel it’s culturally important to make the distinction.
thank you. as a vietnamese / chinese person, i'm glad somebody said it. there are huge differences in meaning / folklore and purpose.
Dragons are my favorite mythological beast in all forms. It's amazing how differently they've been interpreted at different points in time or places in the world. And while I love a good Dragon antagonist, my favorite ones are usually either protagonists or help the protagonists.
When I saw this video, I remembered Maleficent from from Disney's Sleeping Beauty and its live-action adaptations with Maleficent as protagonist alongside Aurora.
When you mentioned bonding with dragons I’m surprised you didn’t mention the book Eragon or anything from the Inheritance series. It was a really great story that portrayed dragons as intelligent while also showing how they still had a connection to the power and ferocity that they are known for in the west.
I was honestly expecting to hear about Eragon as well, since it is a good example of dragons and riders bonding and how they don't even hatch from their eggs until they find their chosen rider
Don't forget the Dragonriders of Pern, the OG dragonrider book series.
@@DisneyLuvr2008 Ah... my childhood!
@@samphadhavihara4035 Dragonlance was fantastic, the dragons in that were a brilliant mix of terrifying monster (Khisanth) and beautiful empathic being. Think Cyan Bloodbane was my fav just for his twisted whimsy and for making a truly horrifying storyline with his manipulation of the Elven realm into a nightmare-scape

Jon: "The dragon dances you see during chinese new year celebrations..."
Also Jon: *shows lion dance.*
Lol no hard feelings. Dragon dances are actually a bunch of people holding a papermache dragon on sticks and turning it around to imitate the moves of a flying dragon. Surprisingly, the latest minions movie shows that well.
What you see is the more common lion dance where 2 performers wear a lion costume and dance like the 4 legged created on poles. Sometimes, they would even throw rice , veges and mandarin oranges to the guests and take ang paos (money in red packets). I dont know the origin but they are every fun to see each cny. 😊
Was going to say the same thing lol. I think the lions are a kind of guardian deity because you can often see two statues of them at the gates of a lot of shrines (in Japan at least, I’m not as knowledgeable about China or anywhere else). Also, in Japanese folklore, koi fish that live a long time (like 100s of years) sort of evolve into dragons and become guardian spirits of rivers. Lol I actually forgot how much of a dragon nerd I used to be until I watched this video 😋🐉
Came to say the same thing.
hello, former lion dance performer here! from my understanding the original story / myth goes something along the lines of this:
back in the days there was a chinese village, and they had a lion that would constantly show up and threaten them. in order to stop this, the local martial arts school (or the people of the village itself, can't remember) of the village would dress up as the lions and put together a band (drums, pots & pans) in order to threaten the lion / scare it off.
sorry it's been a while since i last checked so there might be a few things off, but that's about the gist of the original story. historically however, lion dance was used by martial arts schools to display their skill in martial arts. lots of lion dance stances are kung-fu stances. this is also why in lion dance competitions you'll see lions doing tricks on poles (they are referred to in the community as "jongs").
the lions are also seen as good luck (sorry not sure where that comes from), or the performances themselves are seen to bring good luck, not sure. either way around chinese new years lots of (predominately asian) store owners will hire performances as its seen to bring in good luck for the year. that's also why they "spit" out the food (oranges, lettuce, rice, etc.) its seen as the lion "spitting out" good luck.
As someone intending to do their own dragon book one day. It's so exciting to see the many interpretations that this creature has had over the years. Thanks, Jon.
I would recommend looking into the Dungeons and Dragons game to see other ways dragons are portrayed. For example, in that game some dragons spit ice, rather than fire, amongst other differences.
What're you gonna call it??
It's all biblical truth retold under a veil of entertainment. A dragon is a corrupt angel.
@@Darkness-ie2yl yeah right
Quetzal’s name has to come from Quetzalcoatl. Dragontales was great. Watched it with my oldest boy. Great memories. Thank You. Keep killing it!!
And also wasn’t Quetzal the dragon who wore a sun necklace?
Obsessive ASOIAF and GRRM fan here. In HoTD there's only supposed to be 17 dragons and in Fire and Blood there's only 20 dragons during the Dance of Dragons. I'm guessing they're going to cut a few of the dragons too young to ride or maybe one or two of the 3 wild dragons on Dragonstone. They'll probably just keep on the show the only wild dragon to be tamed named Sheepstealer. His rider Nettles is my favorite character from the DoD. I honestly can't wait to see HotD. An amazing CZcamsr called David Lightbringer formally known as Lucifer Means Lightbringer was invited to an early showing of the first episode and he has nothing but great things to say about what he saw (I personally think you'll love him because he focuses on the mythology that inspired GRRM and symbolism in the text on his channel) Great episode btw. Keep up the amazing work. I've been a fan of yours for years and always get super excited when I see you uploaded a new episode.
I thought you said J. Harris Targaryen for a second there 😭😂
Great video I am always wondering how such geographically distant cultures have rather similar mythological creatures in terms of their morphology and vague taxonomy.
J. Harris Targaryen - attorney at law! 🤵🏻♂️
I really loved the way the connection between dragon and dragonrider was described in the Eragon book series, it's still one of my fav book series 💕 They could read the mind of eachother but it was described as being more than that, I guess kind of like it is in GOT
you should try Anne McCaffery's Dragon Rider series. It also describes the connection between dragon and rider as they fight to save their world.
You forgot to talk about Pete's Dragon lol this was a cool video, and more videos on ancient creatures like these would be a cool new series to see.
I stopped by one of the beaches they filmed at and was blown away by the majestic views. It wasn't a tourist beach and a bit away from the more famous beaches, but the whole area looks like it was carved out by giants. The edges have cathedral-like caves. I kind of want to see what they're going to do with that location, but I'm not super pumped for the show.
A game of thrones video🥺 thanks solo
"The idea of a dragon bonding with anyone, much less being ridden, wouldn't have occurred to anyone." That's not true. Look up artistic representations of St. Martha, the sister of Mary Magdalen and Lazarus who, legend has it, tamed a dragon that was tormenting a town. Granted, in the story she usually just holds the thing down while the men kill it, but the art is WILD. I have a picture of her doing what I can only describe as "dragonskiing" up over my stove. Did I mention that she's the patroness of housewives? Because she is. St. Martha, biblical wet blanket, pragmatist, and dragon tamer, is a favorite of mine.
Cool
@@LunaIluminada5 I'm guessing this is a voodoo or similar practice? Such things borrow heavily from Catholic culture and St Martha has been heavily utilized. I can't blame you too much. St. Martha is amazing and I love her imagery too, but as a devout Catholic it does mean I have to be pretty careful about devotional images or such I might want.
@@RandaEd didn’t nobody steal nothing from the Catholics , y’all are the thieves 😭
You know I really don’t remember this part in the Bible.
@@MissCaraMint Martha is in the bible. She's the one who complains that Mary isn't helping her serve and Christ kinda scolds her and she also is the sister Christ finds when he returns after hearing of the death of Lazarus. He asks her to open the tomb and she basically says, "but... he's gonna smell real bad," which is hilarious, but also emphasizes just how dead Lazarus was. Like, he was not fresh. This story about the dragon is just tradition about something she did after Christ's death in going out to convert the nations and it's not biblical. Veracity is... up for interpretation and it's definitely not something a Christian has to believe, but naturally early Christians told stories down the years and this is one handed down about St. Martha that influenced how she's been portrayed. I think that's pretty cool. 🤷♀️
You forgot the most important dragon in creation. Puff the Magic Dragon who lived by the sea.
When you said Ann Mccaffery, I screamed out loud. I love her books!
Should have bought Gunther a dragon outfit for this one lol he would have looked like toothless lol
The Targaryen dragons were intelligent, and did talk. Rhaegal spoke with Tyrian; in monosyllables, but he also laughed at him. Humour is indicative of intelligence. Watch that episode and you’ll hear Rhaegal clearly say to Tyrian, “Who are you?”
Wow, is Pern really where dragon riding comes from in literature?
I think there was a legend in the Carpathians about a necromancer who rode a dragon that could control the weather.
Tolkien (pronounced Tolkeen, by the way) had the Nazgûl riding "fell beasts," but they aren't technically dragons by his definition.
The Dragon Riders of Pern series is amazing 100% recommend to any fantasy lovers out there! Another amazing area to look at how far dragons have come in storytelling is the world of Dungeons and Dragons. Another book series with an amazing world and many amazing takes on dragons is The Legend of Drizzt series that has over 40 books in the series. The main thing all of these have in common is the color of the dragons has a LOT to do with what they can do and in some what their place will be.
Great stuff I have always loved your breakdowns of various myths helps my writing
I am so happy you mentioned The Dragon riders of Pern! I loved those books so much, and alot more than Eragon.
I am obsessed with Tolkien’s works and honestly the thought of someone even trying to get on Smaug’s back to try and ride him made me laugh.
I used to be a huge dragon geek because they were the first subject I really loved to draw. It’s amazing the history behind them
I think I love the dragons in the Dragonwatch series by Brandon Mull. They could communicate with humans, they could carry humans in their claws, and they had "breath weapons". Some could breath fire, some could spit acid or poison, some could breath noxious clouds, and others could freeze you. They all looked different too. It was cool and a refreshing take on dragons.
Thank you so much for incorporating Pern in this! The series is so very good, and Anne did a fantastic job. The Dragon Singer trilogy saved me from my then existence and gave me my life long love of reading
Thanks for the video, Bubba leaving at the end was perfect
I remember the Hobby cartoon from the '70s and Smug called them Barrel Riders, thieving lakemen.
The welsh dragon isn't told as an evil creature. The welsh dragon actually a protector and I'm sure he has always breathed fire ( unless that's a new thing for the rugby to burn the "sweet chariot" 🤣).
In Norse mythology, Fáfnir (Old Norse: Old Norse pronunciation: [ˈfɑːvnez̠]) is a son of Hreidmar and brother of Regin, Ótr, Lyngheiðr, and Lofnheiðr.After being affected by the curse of Andvari's ring and gold, Fáfnir became a dragon and was slain by Sigurd.
The CZcams creator Crecganford has done a lot of research on some of the oldest Indo-European stories and the evolution of them. Including the search for the oldest dragon stories. It's worth a listen.
Never thought, you would be tackling this series. But it's nice to see you make a video on it 👍
Dragon lovers should read Naomi Novick "His Majesty's dragon. It was an awesome book from an amazing series.
Great episode Jon, really enjoyed it. I always love when you deep dive your topic. Thanks for your persistence.
Great vid Jon, very cool. Also, seems like the dragon within Gunther was coming out to play a bit there :).
I actually enjoyed "Dragon Tales" created and produced by artists and school teacher "Ron Rodecker" and it was his artworks of dragons that made the TV animated series for Sony pictures entertainment/PBS.
I used to watch the reluctant dragon cartoon over and Over and OVER AGAIN when I was a kid. I friggin LOVED that cartoon.
I think the politics and drama are more interesting than the dragons, and I really like the dragons. I look forward to seeing more of your GoT content.
YES TO MORE MESOPOTAMIAN CULTURE! I would love to see more Assyrian, Babylonian, Chaldean, and Sumerian videos. Especially since the research for it is so difficult, I feel like Jon is one of the few you tubers who would do it justice.
I very rarely feel represented in both West and East cultures- were usually just mentioned in passing for a second or two or not even spoken about at all, just a photo/symbol to make reference- to the point where many people even argue that my culture never existed in the first place, is already a dead/extinct culture, or just complete cultural erasure and not being acknowledged for what I am even though I’m very much real, the language is still spoken and written (although the diaspora is making it very difficult), not to mention all the artifacts, tools, statues, and gold in museums literally on display.
Yaaasss!! Thank you for referencing my fav books as a teen, Jon. The late, great Anne McCaffrey is the dragonmother of early modern sci-fi/fantasy and every dragon fan needs to read them! Brilliant and innovative, they totally remade the myth and turned the genre on its head in the best way 💛 love, love, love!
I remember watching DragonTales when I was a kid (gosh saying that makes me feel old).
Also i think House of Dragons will end better than the original series because unlike the original series there’s a clear roadmap for all the major story beats and characters. We also know how things begin and end so I feel like this show has a better shot than its predecessor, or I could be wrong and things hit the fan as well I’ll wait and see
I love your videos, They are so informative. I've learned a great deal about ancient mythology and modern-day use of it in various media productions. More! More! 😀
the dog licking his hand making jon stop... priceless good idea to leave that in there
there is more to dragons in the west, but their stories are harder to recover. They weren't necessarily evil, but actually some sort of primordial force involved in creation itself. Like Tiamat.
I just finished reading Circe and this woman have a really rich history. She is involved with odiseo, dedalo, minotaur, escila and more. I think you should do a content of her.
I haven’t watched a single episode of game of thrones but still amazing video
I love that you’re covering House of the Dragon and GoT
You should do egyptian mythology
Gunther looked so sad when you asked him to stop the licking. So cute!!!
Great episode my dude
Jon I have to admire the hard work you put into your videos they're enlightening and entertaining. To date I have yet to see the last season of game of thrones.
You hit the nail on the head with these one Jon😭
oh wow this ad in the middle of the video i never seen this before 😭 love you jon wish i did have a reason to use square space
Yay Dragon Tales! I've always had cable, but I genuinely enjoyed PBS kids.
good video. and good explanation comparing eastern depiction of dragons and western depiction of dragons. in fact, watching Shang chi movie, I noticed how the good dragon at the end looked like an eastern dragon but the bad dragon looked more like a western dragon.
Great job. Love the puppy.
Dragons are one of my favorite things, so I really enjoyed this video
I'm using this video as inspiration for two of my own dragon characters, not gonna lie. Great video!
Happy to see you and the pup...I never saw Game of Thornes, but I dug this episode !
WESTERN DRAGON: I bring death!
EASTERN DRAGON: I bring good fortune!
GUNTHER:....
could you please do a messed up origins on Poseidon please and you’re my favorite CZcamsr
Your puppy is so adorable!!!
I was so waiting for you to bring up dragon tails
Love how the shirt matches
Awesome video! I seem to be leaning towards liking eastern dragons best! Of the different examples of benevolent dragons in storytelling that evolved from Mcaffrey and Le Guin, lets not forget Draco from "dragonheart". I'm definitely looking forward to the show!
The Great Protector from Shang Chi was SO COOL!
@@Horticarter41 Absolutely! I also love Valcor the luckdragon from "The Neverending Story" too.
I would love to see a video about the godess Nyx !
I didn't know they made a new game of throws show I'm now excited for It
Jamie Lannister wasn’t that conniving. On another note my favorite GOT characters were Tyrion and Jon Snow.
He had some Tywin in him and aftwr he lost his hand, he ar least starts to use his brain more.
Cersei isn't all that smart either.
@@melindoranightsilver9298 But at least Jamie started using his brain when their dad was going to kill Tyrion.
@@crimsonvoid1595 Also remember, he had lost his hand by that point so he had to be smarter. Besides, he knew his father wanted him out of the Kingsguard, he never liked the idea in the first place.
@@melindoranightsilver9298 True enough which might have explained why he let Tyrion escape.
Lmaooo! Don't feel bad Jon, I grew up with Dragon Tales. I didnt have cable growing up either. Dragon Tales, Cyber Chase, Between the lions... You brought back some memories 😂😂
I was on YT and i saw Jon just posted 34 minutes ago ☺️ i immediately came here
you should do a video about journey to the west of the monkey kings journey
Dragons will never make me boring AAAAND they make me smile of joy.
Forget about checking out your content, I'm checking out the pug on your lap. Isn't that right Gunther! lol 😂😂
I'm so happy your covering Game of Thrones 🤩🤩🥰
love your show and your puppy 💖
My sentiments exactly! Great video
I was stuck with "dragon tails" too 🤣😂 seen too many of those. "I wish I wish with all my heart to FLY with dragon's in a land apart" takes me back..
The "dragon" dance is actually LION DANCE. It is only operated by 2 people so it's a LION. Dragon dance is operated by 12 or more people and with the gigantic lollipop a.k.a the dragon's fire.
Can't wait till Sunday 🐉🖤💚🔥
"George R.R. Martin" the author of his book📔📚 series "A Songs of Ice and Fire" wanted to make his Dragons very realistic & accurate, he said and quote "NO BEAST IN NATURE HAS FOUR LEGS AND WINGS"
Hey maybe you should covered the messed up origin, on the DreamWorks "How To Train Your Dragon" franchise and the 12 Books series.
if you read Cressida Cowell "How to Train Your Dragon" books series and it's film franchise adaptations by DreamWorks Animation you'll see another image of the dragon almost closer to the original concept & depicting the dragon being fearsome animalistic monster, while being heroic allies.
Jon out here talking about Tie-A-Matt, showing pictures of D&D Tiamat.
Watch “The Magicians” I love their portrayal of Dragons.
We really need a video on poisedon
"west side till we die" famous hit em up line
Broooo I DO remember Dragontales!! That was my and my sister's jam growing up
Still absolutely love these videos. I felt the same about house of the dragons but i wanna watch now too. Thanks for the video. Tell the wifey hello n she is missed n keep showing each other love.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooopoooooooo
Glad u did this episode
It's amazing to see the contrast between cultures. Western, typically, view anything more powerful than them as a monster that needs to be eradicated. Eastern, they were sacred creatures to be feared but also respected. What I liked in Game of Thrones is that the line gets blurred between those two ends of the spectrum. Daenerys views the dragons as her children and has a deep bond with them, but when push comes to shove, she ends up using them as weapons of mass destruction just like any megalomaniacs would do whether in a fictional universe or if this was possible in real life. The Dragon has become a symbol of power in several cultures, whether it be status or the pursuit of said power. At the center of it, is the theme that humans have stuck to throughout history and fiction, when they attempt and fail to take control of something they don't understand, they try to destroy it so nobody else can have it.
Have you not ever actually read any Chinese mythologies?!? Japanese, Korean and Chinese mythology all have big bads. Monstrous beasts to be feared, slain or driven away. Some are great serpent men as big as a colossus. Chimeric beasts abound. Human mythologies tend to follow the same paths. Some big powers are good and some big powers are bad. Honesty can’t think of a single mythology that doesn’t follow this pattern. Eastern or western.
And not to beat a dead horse but Tiamat is as an eastern god…
Oh wow! I haven't thought of Dragon Tales for years! And I used to watch it even with cable XD
I can't express how happy it makes me that dragon tales made the cut 😂 I loved that show!
Outro sent me through loops😂
Another great video 📹 👏🏽 👍🏽!!!
WHAT a CHANGE, also, GOLDEN title
Can't wait to be off to watch this 🙌 😩
I think the word you'd be looking for concerning how different the intelligence between Smaug and Drogon is 'Sapience'. NOT to be confused with sentience. An animal is sentient, it has all the senses to interact with the world, BUT is not SAPIENT. Humans are the only sapient species on the planet. (though I feel corvids like crows and ravens are borderline sapient with how smart they are) A SAPIENT being would not only be able to solve a riddle, but CREATE ONE, philosophize, create deep concepts, etc. Smaug is SAPIENT but Drogon is just sentient, NOT SAPIENT. GRRM dragons are ANIMALS, but Tolkien dragons a fully sapient beings.
Found online
If we start with the neutral dragon whose most famous manifestation is probably in Game of Thrones (GoT) where one of the main characters has three dragons following her as her mother. While *Tolkien's* dragons (or for that matter *Fafne* in Norse mythology) are powerful personalities, the three dragons in GoT are _reduced_ to magical animals and, purely symbolically, they are only power through powerful destruction. (Within the GoT world, they are also a royal symbol, but not outside the story.)
Instead of symbolizing that you can defeat chaos, darkness and the ever-threatening evil, the symbol is now that chaos and evil, partly lack their own agency, and partly that it can be tamed for use by power.
These destructive neutral forces are completely in line with the common sense notion that man can control, not only the nature outside him, but also his own nature.
Dragon Tails...been a while since I thought about that! I can absolutely see that name connection
My ad was the trailer for the game of thrones Targaryen story that this video was talking about. Feels like a unicorn moment
