The song swept charts in South Korea and got real time all kill (first place on EVERY SINGLE chart) plus 2 victories on music shows, it has entered the Top 100 of U.S. iTunes Top Songs chart to currently become the top-selling Kpop song in America plus got amazing results WORLDWIDE too landing on 22nd place in iTunes chart...I'm not talking about the kpop chart but the overall chart!
This MV and lyrics are packed with a lot of interesting references and symbolisms. In the lyrics she uses "delicate Shim Cheongie" ...referring to an old korean tale. Shim Cheong (a filial daughter) was sold as a virginal sacrificial offering to the sea, in this way her blind father could make the temple donation needed to miraculously restore his sight. With the help of the Dragon King of the sea, she returned to the land and eventually became a queen. So Shim Chung is sacrificing yourself for the benefits or happiness of others, it means a great love without boundary.
There are'nt that many songs with this concept, telling him/her you should live for yourself don't breath only for me...usually it's the other way round, "give me more attention, give me more love". Mamamoo are famous for writing songs with interesting concept, empowering, respect, love yourself and so on.
In the beginning of the mv she's reading 'Animal Farm' by George Orwell which is all about the constraints of society and following the rules…she tosses it aside. Her wrapped up in the plastic bag, coming out of a wardrobe crying, walking and dancing with confidence on a table and no one is paying attention to her while when she has a lighter skin tone and cuter hairstyle boys are at her feet...all is a clear reference to how women are treated in korean society.
The girl embracing Hwasa is Wheein, another Mamamoo member and her best friend since middle school.
Her cameo is interesting too...if you consider the lyrics of this song and Wheein solo 'Easy' it's like watching the opposite sides of the same coin. Plus Wheein is Hwasa source of strenght and comfort, you can see her leaning on Wheein and Wheein embracing Hwasa. Their makeup is natural and they're almost nacked because they can be themselves with each other. In the all black scene where you can see her and the legs of a man; it's like she abused of his love so much that in the end killed that feeling and when she understood what she did to him she tried to take the boy back but in the end he leaves her.
Many people pointed out those blatantly fake birds...I mean, they could use CG like the leopard in Egotistic MV but I think they did it on purpose. A bare tree with fake/dead birds. Everything is white, birds, dress and background, so lonely. In Korea and the Middle East it is the norm that white symbolizes time of mourning and funerals. It is an interesting predicament that theorists find white relays the message of clarity. It could be thought that once someone has passed away there may be clarity in the peoples’ lives, or lack there of. And right after compare the black scene...so going back to the theory of the mourning and understanding (clarity) what she lost. the scene where she's dancing and partying with so many people while he's there, he stays still on that bed.
They look at each other so she nows he's lonely and sad there but she's smiling at him while dancing, like a spite to hurt him once again. In the end the flower on the ground represents the beautiful relationship she had, the beautiful love he gave to her. When he decides to leave her, the guy tosses that flower on the ground and she tramples on it like she did with his feelings. Mostly of mamamoo's backup dancer is known because they appear a lot in their performances. Hwasa and Wheein can do vocal belting. Solar Hwasa and Wheein can rap. Moonbyul can sing highnotes too. Yeah, I love this song too. She is just amazing. This song was so meaningful. Her other solo songs are masterpieces too. You would like it.
I was saying this before, Hwasa is already an incredibly talented vocalist, but she also has an advantage of having a very unique vocal tone that is warm/dark and at the same time has this raspy/scratchy quality when you hear it. And she makes absolutely great use of it.

Hi Aaron we knew you would love twit… man The beat the chorus… HER VOICE and also her lyrics; Hwasa is known to use word plays in her songs A LOT, the use of metaphors and symbolisms is one of her fortes too as you can see in her work for example Be calm (2018) (That mv was made with only 20 dollars and I’m NOT even joking /she said it herself) Twit (2019) María and LMM (2020) And I’m a 빚 (2021).
There’s a Korean channel (DKDKTV) that explains very well the meaning/ wordplays/ Korean metaphors/ cinematography and literature background of her work (Twit, María and LMM). We know she always delivers with her music and voice but although a lot can be lost in translation or can’t grasp the whole meaning (like “Be calm” that the more correct translation /context/ would be “Became numb”) her performance let us hold it unknownly for us, she can really communicate what she meant or intends to do with her music and that’s something that’s invaluable for us.

twit means "idiot" refering to the guy idolizes her like a fool when she ignores him. hwasa said that the song shows at the end..."she was the twit" as he left her
Alright, so as I understand the video, Hwasa is trying to save the relationship, but it's really hard. She wants to stay with him (hence the white dove), but he is literally under her. So the relationship is doomed in the end, even if she tries to hold on to him.
So in the end it's about a unhealthy relationship, which then can be transferred to the way some "fans" treat her. But that's a different story
she needed someone who is independent, dominant and stronger perhaps (that's me tho)
Hwasa free style singing is very different from that of other South Korean idols. She combines Eastern and Western singing features. Not only that, her magical charm on stage is irresistible.
