Project Success: Defining the Problem

  • Albert Einstein is credited for emphasizing the importance of problem definition by stating “If I had only one hour to save the world, I would spend fifty-five minutes defining the problem, and only five minutes finding the solution.” When working in the engineering field, we aren’t necessarily always thinking of problem solving and problem definition in this way. Throughout your career you will be asked to work on different projects that are not fully defined. Those projects will also need to be accomplished within a specific time frame and within budget. This can compromise the decision-making process to explore solutions prematurely before clearly understanding the problem.
Jordan Robert, Design Engineer at Noble Plastics focuses on how problems are defined and the significance of problem definition to having a successful outcome. She also incorporates lessons learned from her experience working on different product design projects.

This is the best video and content I know of to talk about design thinking and defining the problem! I've seen it more than 40 times I bet.

The bigger picture of the problem is that Einstein has only one hour.

There are so many Solutions out there... but People don't see their Problem :D

Probably we can put the problem defining this way: from a horizontal perspective, do the requirements cover all VOC(voice of customer)? examples in this video, the weight requirement of a box, the variation of the sand casting to be paired...; from a vertical perspective, is this a problem or just a symptom of a problem? are we addressing the problem or just the symptom of a problem?
People tend to jump to action rather than carefully identify the real problem

Ofc Albert Einstein never said this. But these fake quotes are an interesting phenomenon.
