Im collecting since 45 years and now im restarting again. The oldest rolling-stuff is about 60 years old. So im realy in need to service them all. After that i have to convert them all to dcc. Hopefully im finished faster then the next 45..... im glad to find you, regards from northern germany.... see you Rainer

Another charming repair, veru fun to see Montague running like a brand new model! I actually bought a Duck a year and something ago for very cheap (£15!) with some other spares and repairs bits But at the time I was only getting back into modelling because I didn't have a proper layout, only locos and train set track, bit I thought I'd pick him up before someone else did and I gave him a full service and make over, old owner splashed white paint sloppily on his footplate so I went over it with light grey and black solebars with some light weathering to disguise the mess, but overall he actually ran really quietly and smoothly. And here I am with so many hornby thomas locos that I either got very cheap as spares or repairs or for free off friends! Can't wait to see more restos mate

I must admit I prefer the old XO4 motor!
I’m not sure it’s a capacitor. Isn’t it a TV/radio interference suppressor? They were obligatory in the old days. All my Triang Hornby engines have them.
For those difficult « gunk » removal problems I tend to do as OO Bill does, a good sploosh of electrical contact cleaner…
When I get back to modelling again in retirement (only 5 years to go), I’m going to have some serious refurbishment of this type on all my 50+ locos which I be acquired since my « Flying Scotsman » back in 1969 for my fifth birthday.
What a pity they replaced the all metal couplings with crappy plastic ones too.

    Hello Dan
Thank you for yet another great episode of track to trash.
May I ask what the tool was that you used to take out the crank pins and later on put them back in?
Stay safe, keep sharing and model on.
    Regards
    Lee@NEAR

Hi dan. A bit of info to help. ..(I worked as an applications engineer for dc motors)
The capacitor is there mainly to suppress electrical.noise....ie radio and tv interference. However it also helps reducing commutator arcing.
All dc conventional motors have suppression, but often it can be internal, or even built into the commutator itself.

Be careful with meths. Only dampen the cotton bud. If you get it on the body it will probably damage any transfers or painted detail.

I bought mine from Expo tools. Although i think Eileen’s Emporium may also sell them.
