  • In today's video we take a look at a 2008 Infiniti FX35 that will not power up when the push button ignition is pressed. We quickly discover that the vehicle has a faulty steering lock unit module, but the shop has already replaced the BCM or body control module by recommendation of a locksmith. Find out what happens when you take advice from a locksmith that isn't trained in diagnostics.

Being able to diagnose vehicles now takes education ,patience high tech tools and common sense . And finding a guy who is not out to rack up repairs out of dishonesty is important .
I maintained my family's vehicles .but occasionally my daughter brought my wife's car she used to a honest guy like this one . I didn't mind .he didn't rip her off .has reasonable fees . Then he died from cancer 😕

As a locksmith, I agree completely. 99 % of locksmiths have no business diagnosing vehicle problems. Unfortunately, many vehicle owners will call me and beg me to come out even after I tell them I can program keys, not fix their car or truck. My programmers have amazing key programming software but no testing software. I especially get irritated when a "mechanic" diagnoses the car or truck over the phone and tells the vehicle owner to call a locksmith, the customer feels especially desperate then.

I’m a Lockmith and I’m a bit offended lol just a bit. In this case the mechanic should not take the locksmith advice for a new bcm, since he is a locksmith and only programs keys and fixes locks.
The mechanic needs to call you the electrician/diagnostician before paying for $$$$ for an electrical component that can’t be returned.
Your videos are super valuable and Mechanics need to invest in these diagnostic tool before changing parts that are non refundable

    • @DFWAuto_Hack
      @DFWAuto_Hack Před rokem +1

@@ADVANCEDLEVELAUTOo buddy. This was no clickbait thing. The end of your video tells and insist of what your thumbnail is. You basically said the truth. It is no locksmith jobs to diagnose people cars. Matter of fact, locksmiths do not like to deal eith issues that should be diagnosed first.
On one end of the spectrum, there are incompetent mechanics who make customers pay for parts they throw at the vehicle then at last tell the customers "you must have a key issue, call the locksmith" in just the same way as you mentioned locksmiths telling customers they might need a BCM.
On the mid end of the spectrum, you had cheap customers who buy and drive cars they cannot afford and want to take shortcuts and call a locksmith and usually start their request with "my keys needs repeogrammed" because it is easier and cheaper to have a locksmith come to them than getting their car towed to the dealer. Most of the time they dont even have $11 monthly roadside assistance memberships for the fanxy cars they love to show up in.
Bottom line is, if everyone was staying in their lines and doing what they were supposed to do, they would be less to know problems.
Lastly so yes, Locksmiths are supposed to travel to the site, fix the lock or program the car, grab the money and go although more and more locksmith are getting interested into diagnosing which is not a requirement of their job but a valuable additional skill to limit. If it comes down to that, Locksnith should charge for diagnostic and charge again for the key programming.

I just solved it on my 2011 G37, saved me from spending LOTS of money - if this happens to you PAY ATTENTION:
    - NEVER lock the steering wheel when this happens - ALWAYS keep it centered and unlocked !
    - The 10A steering lock fuse is the one you need to pull ONLY WHILE THE ENGINE IS TURNED ON !!!
    - ALWAYS be careful when pulling out the fuse box since the main electric harness is attached to its bottom
    - If the battery is in the way - remove the battery and then put it back in and only then try starting the car
    - try starting the car while tapping the steering lock module under the steering wheel - tap it WHILE pushing the brake pedal+start button at the same time
    Good luck

When ever you're asked to come behind another person's diagnose or part replacement, I learned early on to find out what was the original problem, then diagnose the problem. Don't accept the previous work that was done as being the correct procedure!
Remember......you were called in because one or more "attempted" to repair the problem and may have used the "parts cannon" and caused more problems!

As both a Locksmith AND a 25 year master auto technician, I believe there are more shops that are incompetent than Locksmiths. At least here, consumers are protected from issues from "Licensed" locksmiths through consumer affairs with bonds and mandatory liability insurance. The problem arises when customers are cheap and try to save money and use cheap entities. Seen plenty of steering lock issues. I'd bet the only difference in the parts is the Logo.

Fact: the steering locks were originally like 900 before they started having an issue then they came out with an updated part that was around 300. Issue is that we couldn't use the old part number on the most repairs but still had them in stock. So most parts departments want to get rid of the old part because 1) they needed to clear their shelfs and 2) they get higher commission off the older more expensive part. The reason the new was cheaper was that it took away the mechanical steering lock function altogether and was more of a dummy lock to start the vehicle, hence why pulling the fuse really doesn't do much

I clicked this video thinking some mechanic was trying to bash us to make themselves look good but I agree with what you said. The issue we have is we can only go by what the person calling us out tells us. Now I know as a locksmith with 8 plus years of experience I would’ve instantly guessed it was the steering lock module due to the key being already programmed but the steering lock not releasing. But the BCMs are trash in Nissan/Infinitis so with little mechanic knowledge I could see how he was just guesstimate that as being the issue, but then again if it’s at a shop it’s their job to find the problem, then call us to do our part.

Excellent video and diagnostics! I think many of us Infiniti and nissan owners knew what the problem was, but you proved it. The 10 A fuse removal trick only works after the steering lock is already unlocked and the car is in acc or on position. While the car is powered up, you then remove the fuse to keep it from every locking again in the future. Usually tapping the box a few times gets it working to do the fuse trick. I would have tried hitting it harder as you are trying to un stick the motor inside that box to move the plunger down. By pulling the fuse while the wheel was locked, it would never be energized to unlock. I assume you guys put the fuse back along with the new part or the car would not start even with the new part. There are other videos showing how to take that box apart and remove the plunger that locks the wheel and trick the car into going into acc mode so you can pull the fuse and then put everything back together. Infiniti and Nissan don't care about their reputation anymore otherwise this design defect would be a recall and a free replacement. But nope.

    •  Před 4 měsíci

I agree with you about INFINI-THIEF (infiniti)F. they for sure DO NOT CARE ABOUT their customers and their reputation. They are a rip off when it comes to their parts. They wanted over 3500 us dollars to replace a differential bushing on my fx35 2009, suv. I got the job done for less than 300. BY getting the diff. bushing from Z1Motors. and have installed by a local mechanic shop.

Other shops have spend a lot of money and still couldn't fix it..They're not diagnosticians..Always understand the system. A lot of Nissans the problem is the unified meter where the customer drops coins and shorts out. In that case the bcm with not communicate. Just disconnect the unified meter connector and you'll get communication. Then the vehicle will starts. In this case you can tap on the steering lock module with rubber mallet and most of time it works.

This is frustrating for everybody involved. As cars become more complex, it is harder for generic shops to compete on the same level. I'm a little surprised the shop didn't do the right thing up front, and eat the cost of the BCM. And it is another reminder that engineering trouble codes should be designed to more accurately reflect the diagnosis. If properly designed, this would have been an easy diagnosis.

Eric, while I usually love your thoughts and input I actually take offense to this one. Not all Locksmiths are the same and having a "never trust a Locksmith" thumbnail is insulting. I have been a Locksmith for a number of years and recently switched gears as I have already posted on your channel to Advanced automotive diagnostics, module programming etc, etc. As a Locksmith if a customer called and I couldn't program a key for whatever reason I would need to take the vehicle to a shop and have the issue figured out and once they did I would be happy to come back out and complete the process. Now I still program keys and if the issue arises I have a machine that not only programs but conducts diagnostics as well and if I encounter this type of issue I tell the customer that this code or module is presenting a DTC and they need to take it to their mechanic shop. While I do advanced diagnostics I will not do diagnostics when called out to do a key programming because there are different fees associated with these complete opposite jobs. If the shop is unable to figure the issue out and calls me, I will gladly come to the shop and complete an advanced diagnostic. Please refrain from making a blanket statement about Locksmiths when that statement is meant only for the ones that think they know what they are talking about. In closing remember that the "shop" is the one that diagnosed the "BCM" and no matter how they came to the conclusion is "their" fault and not a reliable "mechanic/shop" at this point. I have NEVER seen a shop take mechanical repair input from a Locksmith unless it pertains to the "IMMO" system. While it is a far fetch for a shop to say that "well the BCM is part of the IMMO system therefore the Locksmith must know what he/she is talking about". Yes the BCM is a part of the IMMO system but so far removed and does so much more. You're still my favorite AAD channel for now but please don't make these blanket statements in the future. That would be like me making the statement that "ALL" mechanics are rip offs! Make sense?

Hello I am a locksmith and you’re right many locksmiths make that mistake of bold eye trouble shooting vehicles
I also have seen mechanics and technicians also giving customers wrong diagnosis many blame on car keys, many customer calling me saying that their mechanic or their shops said the car key is un program now or keys need to be reprogrammed to the vehicle and just like a tell customer a car key most likely will never get un program unless the key is damage
Most likely both ways locksmiths and mechanics trying to diagnose each other’s
Also just want to make quick poin about the function in your scanner
Basically your scanner is capable to program bcm on Nissans from 2001 up to 2012
Nissan change their system from 4 digit pin code to 20 digit Pincode in 2013
Which is more complex for scanners to decrypt the and write the data from original to a used donor
Even though that you seen that function in your scanner of read data and write data back to bcm it won’t work on newest models starting form 2013 and. Up smart key system
It might work in some Nissan bladed keys like Nissan 2014 or some rogue 2014 but not on smart keys systems
Also of customer agree to bypass the steering lock module there is a proper way to defeat it

I'm a locksmith with 28 years of experience. I've come across this steering lock problem a lot since it is a common problem for Nissan and infinity and also Mercedes Benz. I've never told a customer anything that's out of my expertise such as you need to replace your BCM or ECU since I'm not qualify to do so. Having said that I've heard horror stories from customers saying that their mechanics lied and basically took money from them and didn't replace any parts or fix their problem. I'd never trust a mechanic cause around here they are pieces of crap, liars, and thieves. Just because that one locksmith took it upon himself to give the customer the wrong advice doesn't mean you shouldn't trust all locksmiths. I usually get my customer going with those kinds of problems and tell them to get it fixed at a later time, I've even taken the steering lock apart and disabled it, with the customers consent, since it serves no purpose and no one can steal the car by hot wiring it. I also own a Maxi sys scanning tool and know how to use it.

I'm been doing Locksmith for the 32 years and frankly the way you sound is like we as a Locksmith we go and rip people off. I think you should be careful the way you communicate and express your self not all Locksmith are like that, because what you are doing is sending the wrong message to people. oh more thing that infinite that you were working on does not have a transmitter receiver antenna on the push to start button. So practically you weren't doing anything every time that you were trying to push the key fob against the button. That system is push to start with the key fob slot, so the transmitter antenna is on the slot not on the push button and that car also has other receivers around the car that detects that proximity of the fob.

Hi my friend, I do view you as a friend. To group all Locksmith’s and ripping off customers…, please understand many mechanic do that for sure.
I have a 2018 Transit Connect..I had the transmission rebuild in Sept 2022. It came with a 1 year/12,000 mile warranty. Feb 3 in route to a customer, I am a locksmith btw, it went out again….wouldn’t move after I rolled it off the road in traffic.
It was determined that the trans fluid had gotten hot somehow…the mileage was 2k over the warranty in the short few months of the life of the rebuild trans. First one went 100k miles..second one 14,000 miles. It was determined after a new $3950 quote that the torque converter was bad and had over heated the trans fluid.
The manufacturer has sent a new converter but wouldn’t cover any of the labor. I got the labor cost from the $3950 quote to $1900. I have paid that in full…it is a reputable transmission shop here in town and only specializes in transmissions. The replacement torque convert is all he is saint is bad…wow…they have sent a 3 one and the shop isn’t including more labor…but wants more money for filter and new fluid…the van necessary moved after the 2nd torque…never moved off the lift in the shop.
Now with your analogy some would say transmission
mechanics are ripping people off, but I see it as an honest effort to get my work van back running and we have to address the new issues. If you live in a glass house and have never misdiagnosed something…then awesome, but the locksmith should, have told them to tow it to the dealership, of which some would say is also not always the cheapest route.
I am a locksmith and I view hours of videos on youtube including yours even with such a condemning title to learn what you have to say. Last night I did a 2009 Infinite G37 and it was the reader/slot that was bad. Today I am better trained thanks to you to look at the esl…my computer can unlock it so if it’s not the reader or esl…it may be the prox..
But to never use a locksmith…really isn’t fair to us out here that really try to do good to the customer and get them up and running so they can get to work.
    Sincerely
    Jeff

Just so you all know out there most of these steering lock actuators you can now buy just the motors for them online Amazon and eBay both sell them and the good thing about that is you don't have to program anything if you just change the motor that is usually what fails not all cars show steering lock messages on the Dash like older Toyotas and Lexus you will just get a security light flashing and you'll have security codes in the main computer and one or two other modules but the main thing is look for that motor if you buy it it's much cheaper than buying the whole module and again no programming required it's not that difficult to open these things up and just manually test the motor I'm really glad they did away with these things they were unsafe costly and not really necessary also there are programmers out there to get around the whole security thing and there are different ways to turn it into a dummy switch and just not use the steering lock

Great video as always Eric! I"ve had similar experiences with locksmiths too. They rip shops off. They take their money and they don't fix the problems. Sometimes I've had to fix all the problems that the locksmiths or other s-called diagnostic technicians create. And diagnose the problem properly. One little thing. You were putting the remote tip on the wrong place. If the car has a slot, then the antenna ring for the immobilizer is on the slot itself. Like pre 2007 Altimas. If the car doesn't have a slot then the immobilizer antenna is on the switch itself. Like 2008 plus Altimas. I've verified this by taking the switch off and looking for the antenna. I've had the same problems with shops and customers, but some of my shops have me do the explaining of why their car needs a couple hundred dollars more of work. And I am the one who takes the heat.

    • @cyberslacker5150
      @cyberslacker5150 Před 3 lety +1

One thing. Yes. it takes forever to replace these steering lock modules and they're expensive so I tinkered and found out that the problem is the little electric motor inside the module burns out. So I pre-order some new motors from China and next time a job like this comes up, I replace just the motor, and charge an arm and a leg for the fix.
