Hi, Stuart. Long time viewer, first time commenter. I wanted to thank you for your videos and particularly your thorough attention to detail. Today, I changed my air filter on my '17 Bonnie T120 (Jet Black) to the K&N by using the steps detailed in this video. I am happy to report that everything went smoothly without any issues. So, from Oklahoma, USA, thank you for the help and please keep doing what you're doing; I, for one, truly appreciate it.

I’m excited to make this install while I wait for this late snowfall to clear up before April. I’ve watched a bunch of your videos. Ended up getting the same x-pipe project done from your other uploads (which I somehow cannot find any longer). Can’t wait to start Bonnie up with new lungs! Cheers!

Your videos are always instructive (and often entertaining) thanks. The information provided is clear and solidly trustworthy. Between a Haynes manual and your postings, the average Triumph user should have no trouble maintaining their machine to a high standard.
I have just installed a K&N air filter on my 2017 Bonneville T-100 and wasn't sure about what K&N intended re. the the application of their grease that comes with the filter. Its purpose is to fill any tiny imperfections in the air box moulding, so as not to allow any tiny particles to circumvent the filter ... and go directly into the engine.
Their instructions direct you to put a light bead of grease on the upper edge of the filter, so I was a bit conflicted by the advice in your video to put a bead around the lower edge (between the filter and carrier) ... to avoid the possibility of a stray bit of grease being sucked into the engine and causing trouble.
For peace of mind I spoke to someone in the Technical department of K&N today about the best course of action here. The consultant told me that grease under the filter, as you depict, wouldn't hurt, but isn't really necessary. A fine bead of grease (that the tube is designed to dispense) around the top edge of the filter seals the more-important joint between the "clean" side of the filter and the air box, and carries no risk ... in their opinion, the air pressure would never get high enough to suck a nib of grease off the frame of the filter and into the air intake.
No disrespect (quite the opposite) but I thought I'd share this P.O.V with anyone else that may have had the same question.

K&N's are always one of my first mods; had to wait a bit for them to make one to fit my Daytona when I bought that ('97), and not too long after I put one in my T100 I went a step further and mounted an airbox removal kit (which included two K&N's for the carbs), very similar to the set-up on my old Yamaha after I threw out its airbox -- still going with 124K on it but torn down for a rebuild as head gasket was leaking.

Thank you again I planned on putting one of these filters in my triumphs then I just picked up at my local dealership it was used they said they went through it. With all the motorcycles have purchased off them and we're talking $27,000 motorcycles 2018 Indian Chieftain, 2020 Indian Challenger and the 2021 Royal Enfield interceptor you think they'd make sure they really did go through it and you should see the air filter I took out of it it was black as the the paint job on my bike they will be getting it back later today and reimbursing me. They did give me the oil for an oil change at least they did that along with the filter now we're just going to go get cashback for a air filter 😊

Happy Birthday! I think K&N is at least easy to wash and lube - only thing one could do wrong is lube is too much... We had K&N:s on our former bikes, now we have Unifilters - they are much more difficult to clean if the most sticky air filter oil is used (French Motul I think is the STICKY one for foam filters...), but one likes to be sure it stays on the filter and doesn't travel into engine... Found some (Motul, too) non bleach-based but a detergent (hydrocarbons, xylene etc. better always wear liquid safe latex gloves) that does the job... So, K&N is easy and most probably lasts the life of the average user...

    Hello Stuart,
Great video. Do you have any information if this filter fits the T120 euro 5 engine MY 2023.
I ask this because from my understanding, a buster plug is not compatible for 2023 models. It has to do something with the sensor regulation and engine warning light. If there is a change in air flow some sensor might report a change and activate engine light???

There was a worry that if it was used on the top. It might get pulled into the injection system. However the best bet is to follow their instructions, as they have obviously got their heads around it now.

I have fitted a K&N air filter to my Royal Enfield Classic 500. I also replaced the heavy and restrictive factory silencer with a tuned BSA Gold Star type. The ECU has fully compensated without issue. These two upgrades have completely changed the performance which is now far more responsive and noticeably less labored. You can actually tell the engine is happier. Yes the mileage has dropped a couple MPG as a result, but may also be from my happily winding more out of her. I agree with Stuart's excellent assessment. In my case the drop in MPG is well worth the obvious gain in performance.
Hey Stu, I saw some surface rust on those pliers of yours. Better get after that with some Muc-Off rust remover and chrome polish. ;-) Happy birthday Matie.

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  Před 6 lety

Those pliers are almost as old as me!
K&N suggest that the filter may improve fuel economy so perhaps it is a case of a looser right wrist?

I am getting a k&N AIr FIlter for my 2014 T100SE. Are you getting one for your T100?

Hi Walt, Im not sure what we will be doing as yet, as we will be removing the air box at some stage. so in all likelihood we will be putting some sort of pod filters on. either way your upgrade will be very worthwhile im sure!

Stuart, I noticed that you recommended the DNA air filter for the RE Classic 500. For this bike you've chosen K&N air filter. Is this brand of sir filter better suited for a Triumph than the DNA?

Is there any difference in fuel economy?

Hi Stuart, looking closely at the bike it looks like you don't have the Dart flyscreen on there any longer. Is this this Triumph screen? Is it working out better for you than the Dart with regards to the rubbing issues?
Great video on the K&N. I have a Street Twin so I'm hoping this part will work on my bike as well.

Re the Street twin Ryan let me know if every thing looks the same!
and the screen is I'm afraid still the dart classic.
      Thanks for watching!

I notice at the end of this video, as you come to a stop, you shift the transmission into neutral. When I park a bike on the sidestand, I find it prudent to leave the transmission in first gear, as that's my only "parking brake." Left in neutral, it can roll of the sidestand and there goes the chrome on one of the silencers.
On old Brit bikes, since we had to find neutral before kick-starting the bike, we often fiddled around with the shifter to find neutral when parking so that cranking the bike later could be done without the fuss of finding neutral. It was silly, but that's what we did. However, on modern bikes, with clutches that actually release, hitting the magic button in gear is quick and easy.

      Hi Stuart
      I have done some research on the t 100 Bonneville 2017 ,
So far the K&N air filter looks and I believe used ,is the same one as yours ,
My 2017 new t 100 HT 900 has the same air filter box as the street twin 900 HT engine
In the next week if I have time I will remove my air filter and have a look!
Triumph say the new 900HT engine used in the street twin is used in the new t100 Bonneville ,so I hope they use the same filter .
Will let you know more soon .
      Regards
      Paul

That interesting paul! K&N gave me a diffenent model number. itmight be worth giving them a ring . if you can take out the stock filter and take some measurements that might help pin down which one it is!

Personally, I'm not a fan of K&N, so I will not use this filter, but I appreciate your nicely done video showing how the filter is replaced.

Just Got one of these, My dealer has advised me not to fit it as it will void the warranty, they said something to do with oil flow, are they talking out their arse?

lol thats the best one ive heard yet! cant believe some of them are still trying to use the warranty void card after the 2015 consumer rights act came out! The government has been stamping all over vehicle manufacturers for years you would have thought they would have learned by now! thanks for watching Dave!

My own experience with K&N would not engender any trust whatsoever in that company. I "fitted" their air filter for the Suzuki S40 only to discover that it does not fit, will not fit and will leave gaps that will damage your engine. Period. When putting up their rubbery air filter casing against the original it's obvious that it cannot fit. The worst part of the experience was dealing with their technical department. They kept asking me more and detailed questions, but they never answered. They referred me to various departments but again, I got no answer they kept fobbing me off till I simply went away. I did get a refund from the seller, but K&N came across as well dodgy both in their execution of their product and in their response to my enquiries. It is my belief that their success is due to marketing that feeds on itself.

Happy birthday! I hope you had a great day! In terms of performance, maybe consider getting your bike dyno'd with the old air filter, then test the new one to see how big a difference it made. If it's not too expensive...
