  • Weird Symptoms of Iron Deficiency | Nails, Tongue, Skin, Hair & Others
Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world. Iron deficiency can lead to several important clinical outcomes, including iron deficiency anemia. In addition to anemia, iron deficiency can lead to a host of other strange and vague signs and symptoms, including cracking lips (angular cheilitis), canker sores, dry skin, thinning hair and an association with restless legs syndrome. In this lesson, we discuss why these signs and symptoms occur along with many other atypical and “weird” signs and symptoms of iron deficiency.

I have been religiously eating frozen strawberries. I was just diagnosed with iron deficiency and vitamin againdeficiency. I was searching to find out more about these issues. And my mind is blown. Because I experience at least 98% of the symptoms for both deficiencies. I was just prescribed medicine & i am praying for relief!! I just want to know what it feels like to feel good again. Its been so long I honestly can't remember what it feels like to wake up in the morning pain free, energetic & looking forward to doing something. This diagnosis gives me hope that with the right meds I may experience that feeling again.

SIBO is also associated with RLS 🙃. So, if you're trying to get to the root cause of RLS and you're not Iron-deficient you may want to look into that. (SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, btw. Common symptoms are bloating, abdominal pain, and irregular stools.)

Whoa! I’ve had 90% of these symptoms over the past year without having any clue that iron was the cause. I don’t have hair loss, at least not noticeable but probably because I’m Native American and it would take a whole lot wrong to start balding lol. That and no mouth sores but I absolutely had angular chelitis a few months back. Just looked at my nails and can see the lines in them and also realized I haven’t had to cut them hardly at all. The most noticeable thing has been the RLS, tiredness, and recently my calves have started feeling cramped for no reason. At first it was just my left and now my right one too.
I’m here because I just got my blood test back from a checkup and my ferritin/transferritin levels were super low. Haven’t heard back from the doc since it’s thanksgiving week but got the electronic copy of the results online and I’m taking an iron supplement now.
This is actually really relieving because I’ve been supplementing on all the major vitamins for the past month with no results and never even thought of iron probably because I’m a man and it’s just not something I really ever hear any concern about other than for women.
Doing some research, I think it might be due to all the NSAID’s I’ve been taking.

The annoying bit is when you have iron deficiency, pretty often the symptoms are listed in a was that doesn't go into it, doesn't elaborate and makes it vague wherever you look for info. You are left wondering if your symptoms are iron deficiency, even when you've been diagnosed because they tell you you might not even have symptoms or describe basic ones that could apply for another condition

After long term Zinc Intake I had Iron Overload/ Disregulation and Anemia. This was because Zinc intake caused a Copper deficiency which caused Iron to malfunction and cause serious health issues which had me ending up in hospital. Zinc supplements cause Anemia and Neutrapenia, grey hair , rapid skin wrinkles, all symptoms reversed within several months after stopping Zinc and taking a Copper supplement..Copper manufacturers Collagen which improves skin and hair quality and colour. My iron is fine now and so is ny health 😊

Interesting ! Have koilonychia on 2 fingers of each hand for 15yrs, onychorrhexia for life and wondered other possible causes of those. Anemia runs in family and loved liver as a child(felt better, but it has B vites and mienrals including iron). Some of those symptoms you mention are B12 also ! Lately have high iron but ferritin 34, high TIBC and Dr said Hg good (12.8) so ignore high iron (also high in MCV). a B12 oils website said iron needs B12 to work and B12 needs B2 (which needs minerals). Are there signs or labs to ck better iron status than iron and ferritin? Same with B12(if have antibodies and analyzers use ab than skewed results) Had read that a copper protein carries iron so maybe that is off.
