• PYRAMID TARP SHELTER S...
This is the best tarp shelter formation I've come across, it is the INTEGRAL DESIGN SILTTARP and I've used many. It held up to pouring rain and about 30 mph winds. I carried no sleeping bag, barely any gear and started well after midnight. Some of my subscribers were TO MEET ME, but none showed. But the night was great. Very cold and wet but in this tarp, I stayed bone dry. There is a shot of some creepy looking bug crossing the trail, if any one knows what this thing is, please let the rest of us know - Jak na to + styl
I tried the shelter setup this afternoon. I used the hose to water the shelter thoroughly and it WORKED PERFECTLY WELL!!!
Thank you so much!!!
I have the same tarp got it from Mountain Equipment Co-Op here in Canada, I use it as a tarp over my Hennessy Hammock, works well, I use zing it as a ridge line, and zing it for my steak lines, as well as some dutch ware bling to help with speedy set up and no knots. Great tarp. I will try to put up a video some time soon of the set up. I love how small and light that tarp is.
+THENEWWRANGLER it works great. thanks for watching
I love your sense of adventure Alan, you're a real inspiration.
good video. most people hate getting rained or snowed on in the outdoors but i cant think of anything more relaxing. thats what makes you realize exactly why you set up your shelter in the first place
Youre so hard core! I always love your videos and observations, and as always your reviews of your gear and your tips for backpacking. I love how you go minimalist!
That's a pretty nice kit you put together, amigo. I found a lightweight 'Ledge' sleeping bag I now use almost exclusively for four seasons as a blanket from that company called, The Scorpion. 1# 11 oz. Its packs to the size of your tarp. Maybe smaller. It's only 45 degrees but I sleep with most of my clothes on. It's good quality and cost me, 3 yrs ago, 28 dollars. They're about 35, now, and you can get them directly from Ledge.
Hey Bro, the FACT you get so IN DEPTH with the history of those woods is AWESOME STUFF!! Makes for much more adventurerous trail heading! Hope you find those other graves and that cabin !
Loved your vid. I'm sorry you were cold. I love watching videos in the rain it's so interesting on how to keep dry and makes me cozy watching from home. And the sound of course is awesome. Love camping in the rain! More of this! :)
+duma zuma thanks, you may enjoy this one then. czcams.com/video/EMLEPJPwaxQ/video.html
Rain on a tent.....best sound ever.
AugustHawk thanks
Interesting shelter design. Being a tarp / hammock camper myself, will have to try this design. Excellent descriptions and informative. Thxs for great vid. Hope to see more on this design and your trips. As always...have fun and be safe out there.
I have used this tarp configuration that i learnt from you on 5 nights, It is perfect when there isn't too much wind, and the ground is good but If the wind picks up, I had to tie cord around the walking pole to stop it from falling over
i didn't have any condensation problems, thanks for sharing this setup :)
George
P.S don't try this on bad ground in very windy conditions, It will not stay up :/
The best tarp shelter VIDEO that I have come across. Exactly the kind of info that you want from this kind of video.
+Don Tripp thanks
I'm so glad you posted this video, saved me so much weight in my pack when I went hiking, I've used this Set-up for 4 nights
Cheers PHARRO :)
cant beat a tarp! i use an extra large tarp that allows me to keep me and my bike dry and it is used as a ground sheet too! It's so versatile and light and you can incorporate a hammock with it too good video i am now subscribing.
thank you sir. have a wonderful summer. thanks for watching. cheers
Fantastic and good for you for going out so late not a lot would do so. I truly enjoy all your videos. Thands, Andrew
thanks for watching, did a night hike in the snow this weekend past, video loading soon. cheers
Hello, from New Brunswick Canada, thank you for sharing the video I used your design with a larger tarp it work wonderfully. Happy camping to you, Sir.
Brian Ferris thanks for the support. have a great summer
Cool, man. I used to take off at night up Ice House canyon all the time. Slept at Kelly's or on top of Cucamonga peak. Loved backpacking at night, especially when the stars are out.
THanks for letting me know what this tarp is. I thought you said Tegal Design, couldnt find it on google. When u answered again, you told me Integral Design, huge difference, so now I can find it, thanks a bunch!!!!! So anyone looking, it is an Integral Design tarp Allen loves so much!
well, its in the details below the video
yes a pebble or marble, anything to create a bulk you can tie around then use the ball formed, to tie around with a tie off. Sound complicated but it's easy. I am sure there are some videos of it being done here on y/t some where. you can do this any where you need a guy line as well, all along the edges any where. its better than cutting a hole, that will tear through with the wind. I just used the given tie outs here, due to it was raining at tme of set up
great job and seriously, any shelter that keeps you dry and you survive the night is a great one.so many ways to set up a tarp, one of the most versatile shelter material out there in my oppinion .you did well and great test..btw i nvr sleep all night when im out, alil sleep here and there is most people sleep patterns while camping
Thanks - really enjoyed the video.
Impressed with the pyramid design, and how well it did in the wind and rain with no stakes. That shape also allows you to sit up inside, and use your stove. Neat.
As it rains a fair bit over here in England, will be giving the pyramid design a try.
By the way, kudos for heading off to camp at 2am - great commitment ! :-)
This setup rocks. Thanks for posting.
Da Critter thanks for watching
I wonder if burning a candle in the shelter would cut down the condensation? Or make no difference at all?
Thanks! And I meant like an entire video devoted to it, showing the way to make it and going into details, but you did give a very good summary and description of it.
Thanks for posting. Interesting to see other people's setups.
Your videos rock ! Great tarp, and thumbs up to you for sticking it out. Thanks for showing.
great vid as always was wondering if you ever did any of east fork past ranger station always thought old mining operation was interesting used to go there in fifties
I also done this with my roadeavour blanket. Great video! The sound is very relaxing too
Joie Mojica-Gahum thanks for watching
that sucks your subscribers failed to meet up with you. i know that trail really well. and i normally go to the bridge to nowhere and maybe 2 or 2 1/2 miles further. which hides a natural rock slide. well not a rock slide, but the way the river has carved the rock it looks like a comfy recliner and it feels so good especially on a hot day. but yea, i would love to join you on this trail. that place is definitely a hidden jewel of southern california.
+schubert santos Ive thru hiked the east fork many many time over the years, solo and with friends, subscribers and such. Here is my most recent walk through
czcams.com/video/5D-d-O_3u6A/video.html
It looks like i'll have a great tarp soon, i'll try that set-up sometime.
That creepy crawly ugh.I wouldn't want that to end up in my porridge!
Great test of man and gear both passed with flying colours Eddie.
Looks like a great tarp setup to me. And starting at 2:00 AM? In the RAIN?!?! That's dedication right there. Really enjoyed the video, thanks.
Hi Alan, Thanks a bunch for another awesome adventure of Alan vs. Wild!! That nasty little monster is a Jerusalem cricket as the others have said... Creepy things and they can stink too if you mess with them!!!
Loved your tarp set-up, what an cool shelter and a great test you put it through. Great idea with the rocks. I would have went looking for something to make some stakes. But I'm sure you had your reasons and everything worked out for you anyways.
Hugs! : )
thanks shifty. happy new year
Just curious, why wouldn't you bring a second tarp, since they're so lightweight, to cover the ground beneath you? If it were large enough, you could bunch the edges ip inside your tent to prevent any wetness from getting to you? Second q...how do you get that center rope up and over that tree branch?
I rarely ever use a tarp on the bottom sometimes I throw a piece of Tyvek down that's just my preference as for the Rope over the branch tie on a small rock or tie a stick throw it over simple
Fantastic vid Pharraoh!!! I love your sense of humour and your dedication to go bushcrafting at 2am lol! Some great tips too :-) subbed and liked!
Atb, ~WWC~
thanks for watching
A Pyramid Tarp Shelter - perfect place for a Pharraoh! :) Glad you had a good time, but for the next trip remember some more stakes to go all round. I might have a go at this with my DD 3x3 metre tarp. Thanks for the video!
whats the distance to fish fork from the ranger station parking lot? looks like 8-9 miles? ive only gone to the bridge maybe 15 times and not to far past it. hows the hike from the bridge to fish fork? looking to camp out up there 3 days. thanks again for the info
Excellent video, thanks for sharing. Liked your set up and camping scenes. Good that you can improvise without tent stakes! To improve a bit I would have also had a casualty blanket underneath (heavy duty OD/Silver type). Also the tarp edges covered in dirt with the rain trench. Also loved the Esbit stove, I have this as well in my Bob and Bov's. Now I feel like going back out in the woods with my tarps etc!
i try to pitch it on level ground but that night it began to. I used a stick and dug a gutter along the side it tried to and off around to the side. just reached under the tarp to do so. worked good
That would be a great item to have in the trunk. It appears very light weight.
Thanks for the demo!
Great video. I liked how you turned 3 in 1 into 4 in 1.
ok, and your blade is ready. turned out pretty good. i'm thinking a stay up neer swan rock. theres a small beach looking spot west side of the river, gurarded by huge rocks all the way around. room for 3 tents maybe or even more bivies. and theres some good fishing to be had a hundred yards up river. hows, Sunday night the 1st sound? in around 6pm, out by noon Monday?
If you dig a shallow ditch around the perimeter of the tent (just inside your tent in your case) and a runoff ditch downhill side. That will limit the water going into the tent, and getting your stuff wet.
we did that on the outside perimeter when camping in sequoia ,it rain like hell but water never got to us inside the tent...little trenches work!
perfect way to test your gears. Not enough ppl try and field test in real conditions. thanks for the good video. Greetings from Quebec, Canada.
I might have missed it. What is this tarp tent sold as name-wiseand where did u buy it? I have a traditional tent, actualy a couple. But, this would make a nice lightweight one.
It was an Integel design siltarp. found on line. the company has been sold but they are still out there
Thanks
Your offer to take the kid and his parents camping was awesome.
Do you get condensation in the Golite, with the ventilation panels? Trying to remember, does it go all the way to the ground and is there a floor in the Golite?
RE: IRON MTN - back in the 60's an eagle scout erected a post with an iron box, so that one could register and sign in as having completed the hike to Iron Mountain. Don't know if its still there.
Biglou Begil there is an old pole up there laying or there WAS in the dirt. not sure these days
@edenooch it is a great tarp. integral design use to be made in Canada but I believe they got bought out. I believe now they are made in the mid west
Hello jsut saw the vid. I don;t understand how you set that up. Are you staking just at the corners or elsewhere?
+cchgn see link in details. always check details
How does the water not run in under the tarp where I'm from Wisconsin you would have to ditch all the way around the tarp to stop the water from seeping in
its flat ground and the side are about a foot from my sleeping area.
quick question- looking to backpack east fork in mid june. what are the night time temps near fish fork. i really enjoy the vids man.
How much further is fish fork past iron fork?
Hi pharo, i am like you , will leave in middle night .. its a great feeling of freedom ,being a adult, with a car and gear to be able to travel and hike ,camp out etc.. i often leave in evenings and hit the snowy mountains in AM ,its the best, finding a camp in the dark . you haven't lived unless you have headed off in the woods in the middle of the night
thanks for watching Josuah
thank you for the support
got to know where were you when you first showed it being set up is that a spring there or what? thanks
Is there a video on how to make this shelter? I really want to know.
Dedication to adventure! Thumbs up PHARROH
Hi,Enjoy your videos alot,i spent most of my teen life, beside the gold discovery park in coloma ca,most of the mines i ran across were already collapsed or to scary to go deep into,The bug is i thing known as a potato bug or a Jerusalem cricket ;found one in my shorts , someone put it in my clothes in a suitcase ,another in a shoe , the same trip ,i about sh-t my pants ,thanks again for the trips and the excellent humor , the world is a better place ,you help alot to make it so .
thanks, if you get a chance, watch my newest video, czcams.com/video/AfRznFXQ9D4/video.html
I think youll get a kick out of it. oh, and one guy back east, said he eats those potato bugs with a white gravy! :-0
Your right that bug was nasty looking. Nice to know your in interesting company. Cool tarp set up. I've just made a note of that to try out. Thanks for sharing. ATB Mark.
nice video, i like the tarp tent, although id rather a tube tent with a groundsheet, but it loks decent, how cold did it get? I was out in sub freezing temps last weekend, and it wasnt pretty, i woke up with ice inside the tent , just what you want
that is a nice set-up for that tarp i love it
+Daniel Lessard thanks for watching
also what type of tarp you got there? I want to buy one myself. It seems like yours is very light and that would be perfect for me.
are those parking meters about 10 meters behind your shelter...
just saying
Hello! What's your experience with tarps and mosquitoes? Ever use a net or anything? Tips!? ;)
+pedallin raw there are many but I like the bug tent from sixmoonsdesign, its 7 ounces and works with one trekking pole. works with any tarp set up, has a bathtub floor to keep you dry in heavy rain
in my sl3, tarp only. now days they sell it as a kit. tarp floor and net. It averages 4 to 6" off the ground, zero condensation, even in the snow.
its a integrel design 8 x 10. I also have the same makr in a 5' x 8', it's my favorite tarp. they use to be a Canadian maker, now sold but still going, with many to choose from. they have a web site. check around, huge price differences. cheers
thanks. your right, I have tried that also. have you tried the breakfst skillet meal they sell? man, that one is good!
well i dont like to remove them as it is kept beside by bed incase of a power
outage or something but i have a spare set of batteries .... how does it ruin the light ???
What is the name of the configuartion on the tarp?
you think digging a little bit of a moat kind of thing around your parimeter for the water to go in would keep your edges dry too? maybe give the water some place to go besides in around your edges. then put your stakes in the sides of the moat thing. idk just an idea
if I were on a incline it would help but I was on flat ground and IT POURED! I had no problems. thanks for watching. I have another video, where I am in a 5' x 8' tarp in a small a frame shape. it poured all night and day. I lay and wait, wait and wait. Finally I just got out, packed up and walked out in the rain. soaked to the bone :-)
PHARRAOH ahh. probably would have overflowed and made it even worse then. where i back pack to me and my buddy camp on a point and it would probably help. i feel kind of funny packing a tent. just doesnt seem proper, thanks for the information ill put it to good use
thanks for the support
thanks Sepp. best to you and your familly
Some people just know how to have fun. Great video.
ROSS TAP, thanks for your support but your comments are not showing up in my youtbe but only in my emails????
your welcome. yeah, y/t teaches us and shows us things no other way can. I went to pripyat Ukraine, solely on youtube trades and barters a few years back! Incredible!
A GOOD VID I ALWAYS TAKE 2 TARPS IN MY BACKPACK WHENEVER I AM OUT IN HILLS, SO EASY TO TURN INTO SHELTERS. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
oerhaps this summer, an old friend from my chilhood found me on f.b. and he's living out that way. I use to fish that lake as a kid, huge cat! Lots if fun with the carp also. I haven't been there since about 1979
Hi clownsllider, can you tell me some about your prepper group? I live in LA.
Thanks.
what is the tarp called
When you say it was freezing do you mean it was literally near 32 degrees f? I guess you did have a coat and stuff. You are so right about actually using the gear. I have one of those Modular Sleep Systems from the army with the gortex bivy and the -10 degree bag. I waited until he coldest day to try it out. It was -10 with 10- 15mph winds making the windchill much lower, the bag kept me warm enough to sleep in for several hours. I would have stayed longer but needed better quality sleep.
14:24 You've got water running into the tarp. Would a trench or full size ground cloth help?
yes, a small trench to redirect but even in that pouring rain, I stayed bone dry without it. cheers
where did you go exactly? seems very cool to camp out/ bushcraft
Live in LA...just wondering as day by day i live in the concrete jungle.
Would like to get away from time to time
i like what you have done with the tarp but what really caught my eye is the little pot set up you have where did you find that?
You should dig a shallow ditch around your tarp to keep the rain from coming under. That’s the number one rule that’s taught to Boy Scouts and soldiers( I was both) when it comes to pitching a tent , come on Pharraoh. This is not a put down , you seem like a guy with a sense of humor. I’m going out today to do some X-country skiing in the fresh snow that Upstate N.Y. just got .Good luck and have fun.
Enjoyed your video and experiencing your camping trip. I had just one question. How did you fasten your rope and where that held your tarp up in the center. That was not clear to me me how it was fastened etc, you know , more details on your setup would be appreciated. I like the way you brought everyone into your world. :)
Nice shelter! A question: Tarps don't have a hanging point in the middle. How do you tie the tarp to the rope? Thanks!
what did you use for a groundcloth?
thanks
Thats a perfect setup. Nice location thats is perfect man. Good video!
vanlife82 usa thank you and thanks for watching
thanks for the support
Hey Alan, where do you work and what do you do on night shift? I am going to try that set up. I wish that I lived closer. God bless. John
those big maglites are the best !!! , ive had mine for 3 years and havnt changed the batteriess !!!! there a bit heavy but reliable
sure I have. I have a hennessy hyperlite. jack r better under quilt and hammock gear over quilt. good down to about ten degrees. I have a few videos with it
ive been going it alone most of my life. I worked nights, get off work at midnight to 2 am, these are the only hours I could for years. Besides this, I know every trail, peek cave stream, vally fork, mine, in that entire range. few places up there I have not slept one night or another. :-)
Where can you get the tarp. Any link?
This is so fun to watch
I work in Huntington Beach at a company that designs builds, runs production on and maintains dies used for fine blanking. Leatherman is a customer of us and this is my connection to "zeee blades" :-) The shift sucks, 3;30 to midnight 6 days a week on average. So, night hikes are the norm.
@PHARRAOH Yeah, I won't eat that unless I really have to. Should've told me you were headed there this past weekend. I was itching to test out some gear in the rain plus I've never stayed at the Heaton Flats trailhead yet...looks like a nice place but also looks like it gets too crowded there.
could you do it with a 5x8 tarp
Always awesome vids! I'm going to mess around with doing this with some USGI ponchos put together to see if it works.
Thanks!
when you do, send me a link and if you like, Ill attach it in the details. cheers
