- Here are two tarp set ups I use the most and some detail on the particular tarp I use and suggest. They are strong, super lite and pack tight. If you are looking to drop the ounces/pounds from your pack, don't begin by downgrading your sleeping bag, a warm bag is essential but begin with your pack, then leave the tent home and bring a tarp. 8 oz vs. an average tent weight of 3.5 pounds, makes a big difference over a couple of days on your back! and a fraction of the space needed to store in your pack. A win win situation. Then you can move onto water filtration, stoves, sleeping pads, etc.
It really is hard to beat a well designed tarp for weight. Integrel is doing a good job. Thanks.
I will. Thanks to you I now know how to set up a tarp, and I am not going to carry a little tent every time I go on a countryside picnic now, I will just take a tarp, a few tent pegs and one folding pole and a bit of string instead, which will be much lighter. I haven't tried it out yet but I will do. We get a lot of rain here in the UK but if we waited for fine weather to go out we would never go anywhere!
I really like that 8-10 tarp pitch you did here.
thanks James. I recently used a similar pitch with a poncho tarp. The wind changed mid way through the night and the tarp acted like a funnel, all wind targeted directly on me. I had no sleeping bag and froze till my spine hurt :-) It was a long night
Great. Just ordered a tarp last night. Didn't have a clue how I was going to set it up. Now I do. Cheers buddy. Alb Mark.
PHARRAOH that is a wonderful demonstration of the 5' x 8' tarp setup. I currently love the 8' x 10' augmented pyramid setup this is my man setup out side of bug season in the Midwest. I heavily recommend using your second pole to guy out the center. This gives a lot more room and allows for less stretch in the rain. I have had it several rain storms and have stayed perfectly dry? Actual there is so much room that when its raining I cook and pack up inside the trap, then is the last to be packed.
I like that 8x10 tarp setup. I think that would be perfect for a desert backpacking trip.
I know fishing knotts and knotts berry farm but (not too many knotts) :-) the clips are sold all over, they bite and hold the lines tight. ellimintates the need to tie knotts. I bought mine at sports chellet. sorry, but thaks for watching and the sale info. have a great week
@ColinOutdoors thanks colin. i use the 8 x 5 as a rain cover while walking when it rains. the ponchs always get me steamed. ive never seen a more water shedding material, then that which these tarps are made from.
@Gamermatt99 remember where the columbine spring was, where we filled up on water? during summer, that trail is full of 1" scorps. when I use the tarps in the heat or in east fork canyon, I definatly use my rei minimulist bivy with them. totaly bug proof and stops and wind or rain from getting at you as well.
very good set up. I am planning for a tarp shelter for this summer backpacking. your video clarified a few questions i had.
cheers
hey, thanks for the comment. there is a paramid shape you can make with the large tarp that could fit two and some gear. check out best tarp shelter ive seen. i like this formation the best. tested in rain and high wind. it past the test
Always good to have a couple tarp set-ups handy especially ultralight and as compact as these... :)
Take care... prepare.. Faranglaw
Great video. Just subscribed to your channel. Greetings from Bonnie Scotland. 🇬🇧
Thank you. the 5' x 8' went to your country to a friend named Colin he use to have a youtube colinoutdoors. He quit youtube 4 years ago and its unknown if he still has it or not.
Thanks. Really enjoyed the video. The second tarp configuration taught me how to stake out the back. Very helpful. I felt you talked the right amount. The red Russian T-shirt was cool.
You did it right. You didn't bullshit and you explained how to set it up. Good job.
I like the second set up, I mostly play in the back yard. I have a Harbor Freight 8x10 tarp and it is set up as a plough point in the back yard against a tree. It rained and it actually worked. Part of me doesn't like having to seal the seam myself. I think it should come complete ready to go. I like your videos as I live by Lincoln and the 55 freeway in Orange Calif. I can relate easier to your channel compared to some of the others because I understand some of the areas you go to. Thanks for the video.
Bruce Ferguson yeah, lots more room. I use a 4' x 8' in a rain storm this weekend, it was not enough cover
Very informative...thanks!
To shed further pounds one can also go with a Cuben Fiber tarp...costs more than sil but for those that can afford it's a good route.
hey, thanks for the comment. cheers.
sure they can, My six moons is 14 ounces and has everything you named but some times a simple 5 x 8 tarp is all that is called for. I've spent the night on a 10,064' summit with just this, been in the rain and more. there are ways to work with what nature throws at you.
that is a strong statement....I have always been taught ( I believe) that one needs a closed structure....tent....if you will....to protect privacy....property....and from bugs.....and you are saying this is not so....radical....have to think or at least try it....I want to go minimum....thank you for this presentation....
Good video! Never thought about using 2 trek poles for the entry on the smaller tarp. Great idea!
+Aquila58 thanks for watching
trash bag for your boot, etc., water system or tabs, light and possibly an ace bandage and a compos
Nice set up. I use a homemade 7x9 silnylon tarp. The way you have the smaller one set up, I think the tarp should be bigger. I have a 10x12 that I bring when I go with a hiking partner and set up that way. It's big enough so our feet don't touch the tarp.
Great pair of tarp setups to convince a confirmed tent camper that this is a viable way to save weight when backpacking.
in one of my most recent videos, I use a army poncho at 11,503' elevation in 32 degree weather and 30 mph winds. check it out on my Chanel.
some times it's nice to make it with less, make due with what you have and ot can make at camp. be able to climb cliffs, hold your pack above water and swim a lake, etc. it opens up a whole new set of possabilities
great tarp set up stay safe out there 👍
thank you for watching
Good review. Plenty of concise info without too much "cackle" , thanks.
thanks
Michael. I use the Eureka Solitaire. Awesome tent and not expensive.
Nice job of demonstrating these pitches. I would like to see a little better how you connect the two poles to the tarp at the top in the first pitch. Are both tips passing thru a loop or just one with the other braced behind it?
I have a couple of suggestions to add to the video:
1.say how you pick the spot to set up. I look for flat area or slightly sloping on all sides.
2. say what you use for a ground cloth. I use Tyvek. Cheap, durable. Works great.
Thanks again.
I had a strong wind shread a siltarp2 about 5 years back. It held up but the tears all began where it was staked. I guess it was just too strong of wind. It was a very loud night under a tarp :-)
yes, the ends are just pushed through the same loop and tilted to opposing sides. creating an x. i chhose a spot clear of possible falling branches and such, perfeably flat with no ricks jetting up. if it looks like rain, dig a tremch around the out side making a gutter to direct rain fall. i do use tyvek. a 2" x 7" for $14 at campmor.com thanks for watching
Great information, presentation & vid. Thanks!
@edenooch I do use a tyvek cloth I got from campmor for $14 it's a coulple oz and 2' x 6' crumples up to fit in your hand. indestructable. even come with stake down loops for when you leave your camp, it doesnt blow half way accross the range and end up with some lucky other guy.
yes, but dont fallow the read and use a brush. goes on too thick and bulky. i used my finger and pusher it into the seam directly. turned out beautiful. had 1 tiny leek in heavy rain. since been filled
thanks for taking the time to show both siltarp.im trying to build a shelter out of tyvek & i think i can copy how you laid everything out.im a disabled vet & cant carry a 70lbs pack anymore so your tips are helping me.i miss backpacking so much but i can only go with a max of 25-30lbs pack.ill send you some pics if i build the shelter out of tyvek.thanks again for sharing
One other comment....I always pack an ultralight head net in my kit. Don't always need it but when the skeeters are bad, it is very welcome...
I really like this video. I've watched it a few times. Thanks for putting it up
thanks, I may use this formation, for an over night this weekend at 11,503' if the winds come up
Good video, I like the setup with the bigger tarp
+Eric Blades lots of room in that one
Great video, i'm doing a 200 mile hike in the UK in Sep and although i have a small lightweight tent I'm thinking of adding a tarp over the top to create a porch to cook under, in the rain, some great ideas here!
+dinoden have fun, try all new things, if it fails, you have learned something. cheers
@faranglaw thanks bj, always enjoy your vids. the bug outs are awesome, creapy music and all
thank you. the smaller of the two is now serving Colin over on Scotland.
I am so happy I discovered your channel, because your approach is economically friendly to those that are on a budget plus it is life saving information. Would you demonstrate a cooking video in one of these simply shelters as well as a rainy day video in one of these simply shelters. I am your new subscriber. I lett my boys watch it in case of an emergency. Again thank you😀😀
thank you, i have hundreds but try this one
czcams.com/video/iwHA1S476Sc/video.html
Just ordered my SMD Gatewood Cape. Should be here in a couple of days. Can't wait to try it out.
its awesome but you need use a cord and tie it around your mid section. if it catches on brush, it will tear (when walking with it in rain)
for backpacking, you use a hammock, then you need straps, a bug net, AND a unerquilt. it becomes a pain. I prefer the ground
For most of my jaunts int the Cascades, I need wind and rain protection. While I've thought about going to a tarp, I haven't done it yet. I am currently using the Sublite by Tarptent coming in at 18 oz.
a great one is the sixmoonsdesige wild oasis. 13 full shelter. awesome
Tarping is the ONLY way to go now. I was a little scared of the lack of total isolation at night from bugs and snakes but I have not had a problem (yet)
So many configuarations are possible with a tarp. I like the wide open options that allow me to sit upright, cook and generally get out of the rain quickly.
Oh, and I use only a tyvek tarp. If it ever leaks or gets torn up, I trash it and start new again 'cuz it doesn't cost much (~$20)
Same goes for all my stuff. All cheap crap, no stess!
Good job on the video I just got my tarp a little bit a go and I love using tarps over any thing now so much more easy to use but make more videos have a good one
thanks, here's more

I think I saw some tarp video a couple years back, in fact, there is one where the tarp is a greenish color I believe and he does a cool set up. But I do not know the grade of them or anything. Hope you like it and get many years use from it. thanks for the support. When it arrives, do a set up and link it to this video. cheers
Great vid, just what i needed to see,i have been thinking about a tarp to go with my bivvy bag.Seeing the size of those has made me decide on the 10 x 8 thanks.
Thanks. Great review. I'm looking at ultralight tent - tarp config. for the wet and windy UK. You have helped. If I find my Nirvana I will let you know.
Tks gave me good ideas for shelter for my rabbits and myself am in kombi type van - my annexe too hard to put up on own thank u
thanks for watching. cheers
Thanks for the demo. I'm trying to decide which Integral Designs tarp to buy. I usually go solo. I think the 5 x 8 my be the best one for me.....Take care, Bluefin.
mustang774 the 8 x 10 allows far mor set ups, including a pyramid for heavy rain or snow. keeps you dry and warm. I have a video of it in use in a strong all night rain and another video how to set it up. they are a couple year old but in my collection here.
I like that setup. That's plenty enough space even for someone tall like me (6'4"). I'll have to go back to the video for the brand. But just a tip, you might wanna add a link in the About section. As always, good video!
Hi Allen, Thanks for inspiring me to get back into backpacking here in L.A. I did the JMT in 2001 after working in Yosemite in 2000 and hiking/backpacking there several 100s of miles. I am very interested in light weight packing and tarps and hammocks now thanks to you.
+Chris Bovia great, maybe join us some time. I post invite time to time. check back. cheers
+PHARRAOH Thanks Yes I just missed the one on Mt. Baden Powell. I look forward to meeting you and getting out more. Thanks again. Congrats on your 10,000 subscribers!
@wawhiker thanks, used the smaller one last night on a night hike in the rain. vid uploading today
@mangus7175 or skip the tarp and go for the bivy, the REI minimulist is 15 oz, but water proof and bug proof. very little condensation. i've had mine for 5 years and it looks like new. very tuff piece of gear
according to the diterction of the tarp pith or way you set it up. I have a video of a paramid set up that i she used in the rain. but this set up her ive used and stayed dry. yes. it works.
Like that setup a lot. Just got this exact tarp so I'll be trying it out- the larger one is almost 15 oz though, not 8. And thats not counting the ground sheet or stakes in the total weight.
thanks. 8 oz is the 8 x 5 version. check this set up out, same tarp.Tarp shelters in storm conditions
Cool and good set up´s, my friend. Great gear and stuff. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Tarps are handy but it needs mosquito netting, and because the wind constantly changes direction, you would need something at the entrance. Also, rain can make the ground too soggy to put a pad and a sleeping bag on the ground and also to keep out the creepy crawlers like snakes. I'd feel safer if I had a whole tent with a sealed floor, mosquito netting and a zippered entry door. I'm sure a tent can be found light and packable and reasonably priced.
Thank you for sharing, that was very informative.
thanks for watching
Great video my friend. Thank you for sharing. Be safe out there. 🤗
Very informative and useful. Thank you very much.
Jack Han thanks for your support. cheers
yep, Im thinking about using the 5 x 8 this friday night on a night hike backpacking trek. thanks for watching
one can OVER THINK anything, it works with both. thanks for watching
Very cool Pharraoh!
Thanks for the review. I bought the 5x8 for my rainy WA. weather. Just what I was looking for! I like your vids.
Great configuration for an 8X10. I have a White Lightening. The only thing I'm trying to figure out is how to get some kind of closure on the opening. How could I configure it to be a tad more like say the Shangri la? There are times when it's nice to close it off a little.
There are a few tricks but it takes away inside space. It its raining or super windy, I carry a super small golite umbrella and use it as a door. it folds down to the size id a soda can
at the end of this month, it usually dumps rain and snow. if I can, Ill make a video showing both. In a video I have it poured all night, about 6 hours with hard wind, I stayed dry, using a pyramid set up. also show on a couple of my videos. I was pitched on hard packed dirt. did not even dig a trench.
Great vid, looking into buying the second tarp.
thanks, I sent the 8 x 5 to a friend in Scotland. It;s still holding up great as far as I know
Hi Alan, just bought me my first siltarp. This was useful! Thank you for sharing!
//Ulrica
Gullrica your welcome. thanks for stopping by. cheers
my friend davidsquall has that one too and likes it. but right now, the solo tent is on sale at simoondesign for 50 bucks off. no tent poles needed.
Really cool bud! Very simple and efficient. Keep it coming.
Cheers and Keep Safe
@Smith28Adventure thanks and if your looking to shed pounds and dont mind being in the open, they are great
@mhpatriot no, but have used them with my bivy in the high of insect season and or when in scorpion areas
Awesome video Alan! Great to see your feeling better too.. : ) Those Silnylon products are so amazing, too bad they are so expensive for just a simple tarp. Loved the tarp set-ups. So fast and easy and the Best way to show how great they are. Take care.. : )
Yeah, I saw that. I'm going to be getting a tarp soon and this one is now on my list. Thanks!
ive read books where people have used them. U/L is how most A.T and PCT nd up going. the book, (tighten up), is a book on how to cut weight big time and save a few bucks doing so.
your welcome. I saw a guys video where he makes a tepee out of tyvek. It looks great. be sure to show us your finished product. cheers
You gotta be doing something right. I've just bought and paid for the 10 x 8 and am looming forward to spring so I can "go play".
Nicely done matey :)
Edit: Ooops! Forgot to mention your comment in a previous video about it being your sleeping bag and underlay hich keep you warm. Not the tent itself (unless its 4 season tent or whatever) Got me really interested in the "Thermarest" gear. Not cheap, but what price comfort ???
thank you for your support. hope you have many great treks with your tarp. they are fun in the rain. a guy in England named tony hobbs does some great tarp videos. cheers
PHARRAOH Thanks, I shall google him and have a look.
MrTatts64 czcams.com/channels/XthhKrweQz4bq4pJt2mlRA.html
PHARRAOH Cheers Alan. You're a true gent and knight of the wilderness!
well, there is camping, backpacking and u/l backpacking, it's a give and take coin. You carry less, more freedom but do without some things. Jardine did the pct with less then im carring for an over night on most outings. Ive gone with jusy a emergency heat sheet, no shelter what so ever. made it out fine. It's all the state on mind your set on.. theres a book called lighten up. it's a good read. cheers
Oh one other comment. Ob the 5 X 8 setup use 1 pole front, use 2nd to pull back out which provides more internal room.
Thanks
thanks, tarps cut weight big time but its a win loss, you need to know if scorps or such are present. and if so, how to deal with this. thanks for watching
I notice your well pruned nopales in the background. I have to tell you I cut up some deer steak lastnite and fryed it in butter and garlic then added three nice sliced up nopales cactus leaves and they were good size and let it simmer for about 15 20 minutes. Put it on bluecorn tortilas and it was so good, tastiest meal I had in awhile. Good video.
i just bout that silltrap2 and tryed setting it up afew ways and did t think i was gonna like it now i seen your way and think thats gonna work way better thanks so much
+Daniel Lessard thanks, heres another with the same tarp you will like
czcams.com/video/iwHA1S476Sc/video.html
+Daniel Lessard czcams.com/video/IcoCNzDi8nY/video.html
Outstanding video!
the flash is great but next to a water source, as there is not enough room for water and gear
Cheers. I may wait until the bushcraft show and have a chat to others. Especially if they are silly money.
great video brother,,gave me several ideas!
thanks, at one time or another, we all go through the tarping stage. enjoy
Tks for answering... I'll keep an eye out for them...
I think I must have watched this three or four times now, you're like a teenager in this one Allen ;). Your best tarp video might be the one where your up on some mountain and the rain is coming at your from all directions it seems, you used all your resources to keep dry in that one. I have the Integral Designs 10 X 8 tarp and love it, so light and versatile. Always enjoy your videos thanks for putting them out there.
Ross Tapp thank you. Time flies. Wish I could. 😁
I'd fly a star ship, across the universe divide and when I reach the other side, I might go back and do it all again. Or perhaps out become a Highwayman again, or I may be a simple drop of rain, but I'll be back again and again and again and again and again 👾
@PHARRAOH I've been thinking about walking a section the California riding and hiking trail in Joshua Tree NP. I think that would be fun.
vary nice great setups.
Brilliant video.
Nice job on the tarps my friend, subbed. Thank you.
thanks for the support
not sure, they came with the lines, they sell them at sports challet
Do you know of a way of removing silicone sealer from the seams? I made a mess of my new siltarp trying to seal it. It was my first time sealing anything. Very little room for error! That would be a great video for you to make -- Sealing Silnylon Seams. Show us how you seal your shelters.
i do have a video, best shelter ive come across, where I set a tarp shelter up, at night, in the rain. it was quite a night. cheers
Hi-Tech, Lightweight ! Very cool setup. I may go this route and invest more into a lower temp bag ! I assume these are more affordable than a hammock or a proper bivvy ? And can i request a Road Warrior quote in the next vid ????!!??
there is a video among mine where I snow camp with a floor less teepee shelter. my golite sl3 at about 9,500'
