KEY THINGS:
1. Only top 4 picks are done through the lotto
2. Picks 5-14 go in inverse order to remaining teams not drawn in the lottery
3. Each team has X amount of combinations out of 1001 to get drawn in the top 4

Best explanation of the draft & lottery I have seen. Thank you!
Facts I was looking for something like this
Great comprehensive explanation 👍
Feels really good to see Orlando absent from this list. Hope they continue to improve.
Meanwhile, the Pistons enter their 2nd straight offseason as the worst team in the league and 5th straight season as a bottom 5 team. Truly a historic display of incompetence coming from Detroit's leadership.
nice video again🔥
One thing you left out is if a combination that called for the same team a second time, the balls are placed back into the machine and they restart the process for that pick. You can get that a lot at the 4th pick when you've gotten the the first 3 most likely teams to have gotten a pick already. Really good explanation though!
Yeah I thought most people would assume that’s how it worked, but you’re right that I should’ve verbalized that. Thanks for the comment!
@@UtilitySports Thank you for the great video! I actually did a lot of research to wrap my head around how it works...This video is by far the most descriptive! (I had watched your older videos a few weeks ago to understand how it works as well!)😂
I honest to god didnt know the 5-30 thing. I thought it was random 1-14. Thank you
Exactly
thank you
Appreciate your work, Sheldon. After the Wemby hype, and with my Pistons losing out, I’m focusing solely on the prospects after we know where we’re picking, lol. I can’t get hyped only to be disappointed again in the draft.
last year was devastating! It had my hoping the Mavs jumped up to 1 from ten magically ahahahaha
If i am noy mistaking, hawks pick may be lost (top x protected- don't remember which position) it doesn't appear on your board
When is the coin flip between charlotte and Portland ?
Watch the Spurs get the number 1 pick again
We had a 1in 3 chance of losing the number one pick last year
Detroit first pick ,Charlotte 2.......Spurs 5 pick ! DPOY 1 Bam Adebayo 2 Rudy gobert 3 Wemby 😊 !
Yea y'all delusional they not getting another one in 20 plus years
they will rig it before we get another #1pick. spread out the French talent.
@@ketothebroskiii1253bruhhh yall got so many generational prospects wym about rigged😂
It's pretty obvious why they have a null combination. It's so there are 1,000 viable combinations which can be easily divided up between the teams according to their odds.
Another thing to note is the order the balls are drawn in are irrelevant. It only matters which 4 are drawn.
That’s not true at all
@@UtilitySports what isn't true?
@@UtilitySports why would they leave it with 1,001 combinations when that would make it impossible to give the exact odds they need? Also the order thing absolutely doesn't matter. IDK about the NBA but the NHL releases the actual drawing process and they use the same method of 4 of 14 and they explain the order is irrelevant. If the order of the balls drawn mattered then there would be a hell of a lot more than 1,001 combinations.
I have no idea what you think is wrong with either of my statements because you're the incorrect one!
Okay so I got everything until the very end.
You say at the end of drawing all 4 balls they check combinations and reward pick #1 to the team with that combination.
But what if the combination chosen is the combination assigned to the rockets for pick number 5? That has a set number of combinations specifically for that pick correct? So would it be nullified? Or are other teams sharing the same combination just assigned to different picks?
They don’t draw a combination for pick number 5. They only draw a combination for picks 1-4. The teams those combinations belong to get those picks. 5-14 is just done based on record. Worst record that didn’t get a top 4 pick gets 5 and so on.
@@travisjones6855 oh I see. So the reason certain teams “jump” when being revealed live on tv is due to other teams ahead of them winning the lottery and getting top 4?
Yes, that’s what makes watching the pick reveals so exciting. For example, the Grizzles have the 7th worst record so if you see them pop up with the 8th pick instead of the Jazz then that mean the Jazz have a top 4 pick meaning they jumped into the top 4.
So for hornets and Trail Blazers they gonna flip a coin to see who gets the higher pick or it’s Just gonna be off by .1?
It was coin flip last year btwn HOU and SAS and Houston actually won it haha
So even though the 5-30 picks are based off of record, is it still possible that Golden State gets in the top 4? (Their pick is owed to Portland but is top 4 protected)
Yes it is
NBA loves the line betting Pop. He will get the #1 again…
He’s made the bettors a lot of money.
So in your process breakdown, after the first pick is drawn and we are on step 12 to repeat the process for pick 2, all the balls are put back in correct? If that is the case it's technically possible (statistically super unrealistic), but possible that the same numbers could be drawn. Would that be considered a null combo now?
Yes I believe so. Not sure that's ever happened but you're right
If I’m not mistaken I believe last lottery after the spurs won in getting wemby when drawing for the second pick they actually drew into another 140 out of 1000 combination that would have been first pick for San Antonio again!
@@collinslogan01 That's crazy!
@@collinslogan01this is true.
What happens if Toronto’s pick is 1-6; what happens to their pick next year to SA?
Pick next year is again protected similarly through 2026
How does that Spurs raptors pick work. The protected
If the raptors pick isnt top 6 the pick goes to spurs since its top 6 protected. Which also means there’s been an upset basically a random team is in the top 4. A team like Memphis, Utah etc
let’s go it’s about that time again, as a rockets fan, that BKN pick looks very promising!!!
Facts! 🤘🏽
I think I know the answer to this question but I will ask it anyways. Say for instance a team who is projected to be in the lottery, makes it to the playoffs by winning the play in tournament. Would they then lose their lottery pick? For example, if theChicago Bulls won the play in tournament and became the 8th seed.
Yes they lose their lotto pick! Good question
@@UtilitySportsThat should change it punishes a team for reaching the playoffs
Does Portland really take another guard? Scoot looked much better 2nd half.
Umm, your chart is a tad off. It shows Portland has a 0% chance for the 8th pick but they can get the 8th pick. Really good explanation of the draft lottery though. I like how well you broke it down and explained it.
Because the hornets and the trailblazers have the same record so a coin flip will decide who gets the better pick.
@@Matthew_Kuna Yeah I get that. That means if 4 teams jump Portland and Charlotte then there will be a coin flip for who gets 7 and who gets 8. The chart showed Portland has a 0% chance for pick 8 but in that situation if Portland loses the coin flip then they would get pick 8.
W
This was the math story problem to get into MIT or NASA
For real?
If you're a Nets fan that pick is going to Houston. Never bet on James harden.
Pretty bad when Detroit is tanking to secure the 5th pick not 1st pick....WTF?
The NBA draft lotto is viewed as a complete sham.
Charlotte #2 pick again
I'm excited for the Seattle Supersonics to return to the NBA in expansion soon
Nba bout to give the sours the raptors pick and a top 3 pick..guaranteed
Spurs*
Just need one team to jump Raptors for the Spurs to get another solid prospect
I had a feeling that this will actually come true this draft.
How many lottery picks do the spurs need.. yall fans are wild.
@@paulwall7045 well considering they only won 22 games...I'd say the more the better rn. j/s they need to get what they are owed to improve ASAP. Next year CHI and ATL may owe us their FR picks also.
@@gremlinmachineshop If the spurs don't get this years pick, it moves to next year 1-6 protected. The Raptors aren't going to be at the bottom of the league with R.J. and they're young all star Scottie. Next years draft is deeper. If you're a Spurs fan, you should HOPE the pick doesn't convey in '24.
@@dillamadukes21 yeah but I'd rather have a #7 pick this year than say #13 next draft. The Top 8 guys are at worst solid role players that can all fit on the Spurs. Gives them more immediate flexibility to draft or make trades. Plus we are owed CHI (Top 10 protected), ATL (unprotected), and if CHA makes playoffs we get their pick next draft...so we already have plenty of potential ammo in 2025. We need good players ASAP. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush so to speak. Rather get that pick now.
Funny how that works because the Lakers constantly move up every year.
The Hornets & Trailblazers are tied for the 3rd worst record, they no longer do a coin flip, they use ping pong balls now.🤷🏿♂️
Watch the Spurs get a top3 pick . Fml 😂
hornets getting the 1 as they should
Why should they???
@@uthamanj bc cavs threw the game against us last game of season and we are the most injured team every year
@@thehighvibe5528 Okay, I just don't see any real obvious game changers in this draft.
I hate the NBA draft lotterh it should go from.worse team and on like the NFL...this is fair to the low market teams
Charlotte and trailblazers tied
Great explanation. As a Jazz fan I'm praying they don't somehow convey lol
Why is no one saying this is new? It wasn't like this last year!
