Toyota 5L to 1KZ TE Conversion Part 1 - Electric to Mechanical Pump Conversion

  • This week Shane and Jason from In Motion Auto begin the conversion from our Toyota 5L Engine to a 1KZ TE. The 1KZ as an electric fuel pump, whereas the 5L is mechanical so the first step was to work out if this conversion could be done.

      @@kayakfishingmalaysia244 Still in progress. I'm rebuilding an R151F to replace the G52 gearbox that is behind the 2L. The G52 would not last very long behind the 1KZ.

    Hi just would like to know if the gearbox of the 5L engine and the KZ engine the same
    And will the KZ engine fit on the 5L gearbox

      1kz match r151f gearbox, 5 L match is G52 gearbox

    Helloo have some doubts with all this
    I have a ln130 2lte engine i did a mechanical fuel pump swap but i have so many issues with that like milage drop , power drop , and my ears are not shifting properly ( its an automatic transmission ) so what you think ill put back my electronic pump back ?

      Hey mate, which pump did you use? Does the engine run alright? And have you had it tuned at all? It sounds like the pump is not set up right or the timing is out? If it’s not shifting gears properly that’s something to do with the gearbox.

    Was the 5l injector pump a straight bolt on and go or did you have to mess with timing as I’ve heard people have trouble getting it to start ive got a 3l pump that I want to put on my 1kz but haven’t been able to find information on it thanks

      couple questions so you adjusted the pump towards the engine block with out the injector lines in to get the little bit more adjustment and then screwed the lines on and did you adjust the fuel screw to get it started sorry for all the questions but I’m doing a similar conversion and just can’t find the answers on google Thanks

      It needs to go as far as it can in the slots towards the engine block for the timing, then the pump will need to be rebuilt with a boost compensator to actually get any benefit out of it.
      You will usually have to give it a nearly full turn of fuel on the fuel screw.
      Reef Diesel in Mackay (if you’re in Aus) told us about a 5 degree timing plate which adjusts the sideways plunger which will give you extra timing at low revs. This can help with starting.
      However we haven’t done that. Sometimes it carries on a bit when it’s cold but is fine within 5 seconds so don’t worry about it.
      Hopefully this helps! We know what a nightmare it was with the lack of info on google so more than happy for more questions

      No you can’t unfortunately it’s a different bolt pattern.

      It’s the mechanical pump from the 5L engine.

      We didn’t have to do any wiring as it was the original mechanical fuel pump from the car.

    What are the advantages and disadvantages of changing from electrical to Mechanical. Does it affect fuel consumption and engine power ?

      The benefit of mechanical is it is a simpler system with less electronics. Those early electric pumps are very basic so going to the mechanical pumps gives you more parameters to adjust when tuning which can give you more power. Yes it affects the fuel but not necessarily in a good way haha.

      Tacomas are massive you could probably put something better/bigger than a 1KZ in it!

      Probably, any engine can fit in any car if you’ve got the ability to make it fit haha.

      If you are doing the mechanical pump conversion you can delete all the extra wiring from the 1KZ. If you are trying to keep the electronic pump you will need to use the 1kz engine loom. Hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions.

      So you have to use an R151 gearbox for the 1KZ motor.

    Thanks for all this information in one good video, I'll be doing the same swap soon, I bought a complete Toyota Land Cruiser 90 series with a 1KZT-E in (1997) to swap in place of my 2000 Hilux LN165(2,4td 2L-T). I intend to use a fuel pump off a 2,8 mitsubishi. I'm curious to learn which engine oil sump you've used, or if you didn't need to swap it, I know the land cruiser 90 series sump will not fit in my Hilux even though both are IFS originally.

      Hmmm we thought the sump would fit… our 1KZ is out of a 90 series too. If you do the mounts the same as we did without lowering the engine at all it should all fit.

      @@lifeina4wd Cheers'- I'll report back later about my progress on my channel I imagine. I have read from locals (Iceland) who have made this swap previously that there is interference between the 90 series oil pan and the front differential. We did get 4runner here with the 1KZ-T which shares the same suspension components, so I imagine that sump would interchange directly(along with strainer) to make it an OEM fit if necessary. I'll try it your way first anyway. The next problem I face is the gearbox, my LN165 comes with a W56 which is not suitable for the 1KZ-TE and the R151 with the front drive shaft on the right is rare, the Land Cruiser has it exiting on the left. Do you know if there are direct swap transfer boxes that fit the 90 series gearbox with the output on the right? - Again, thanks - greetings from Iceland!

      Ok so we definitely had to do something with the transfer case and our gearbox when we changed but we actually swapped gearboxes a few years ago… Shane is having trouble remembering what he did at the moment but he’s going to think on it for you! He’ll take a look at ours for you too.

      Add a boost compensator and got to go max rotation towards the engine for the timing.

      It just makes the conversion a lot easier as you don’t have to worry about hooking up the electrics to your dash (only if doing the same conversion as us, as in a mechanically driven car). Same goes for the throttle cable.
      You can also tune them a bit easier as mechanical pumps are easier to modify for more power. Hope that answered your question 😀

      The disadvantages are it doesn’t have any fail dates for over fueling when under load. High egts that sort of thing. (Ask anyone with a TD42)
