I stalled my T-33 late one evening when my headwind dropped to nothing and I didn't notice. This never happens when I'm flying line-of-sight but FPV is different!! I'm running FrSky so I bought their $23 airspeed sensor and now when I get too slow my Taranis makes the stall alarm sound you hear in commercial jets. I get lots of compliments when other R/C pilots hear the stall indicator as I flare for landing. ;-) It's very cool and helpful even while flying LoS. Making that turn onto base leg on a windy day and not paying attention? The Taranis will definitely let me know I'm flirting with disaster!
That’s awesome! I installed the same air speed sensor on my T-33 and my wingman Alex actually built a flight controller to display both air speed and baro altitude on DJI goggles. But when I hooked up the battery sensor, I stupidly reversed the polarity on the balance tab and instantly sparks and smoke filled the room. This shorted out all the electronics on my T-33 and bricked it! I was pretty bummed about it. I will try to install air speed indicator again on the Mig-29. Thanks for sharing your experience!

@@operaswift8623 It's a Freewing T-33 and works quite well for FPV. As of today it has 287 flights on it. 101 were FPV. I've had it since they were first released.

I flew a 172 for a few months back in the day, never forget the first time taking off solo and it climbs so much faster than with the instructor in the plane, hit 1000 AGL so quick to have to turn before you know it👍 good memories
Interesting observation! I was too nervous on my first solo flight to notice such nuances - did you have a heavy set instructor, haha? I do wish I have altitude and air speed indicator to simulate full scale flying more completely. Oh well, one day...

I used to teach flying and one of the things I did was explain to my students before their first solo was about the change in performance. If the student is unaware it becomes a distraction when you really don't want one. When I watched the video I thought that a great club project would be a visual glide slope box. Also with full scale light planes, not jets, the 45 degree rule could be applied - when you are on downwind the runway should appear 45 degrees downward placing the runway and equal distance from the runway as you are high. Nice video and nice setup on your plane.
@@Eugensdiet My instructor was a bit of a cowboy, my first solo consisted of 3 touch and goes just after sunset in controlled airspace (Morgantown WV). On my first down wind leg the tower told me to continue my downwind and they'd call my base. I flew for several miles on that heading before they called my base, I followed a citation (private jet) in on my first ever solo landing, wake turbulence was terrible. was a butt puckering experience!
2stroke Me long approaches are harder vs typical traffic pattern approaches. With wake turbulence and low light, your solo must have been a real challenge. Congrats on pulling it off successfully!

Is the person flying the same person that is commenting? It is absolutely awesome to watch you fly, you practice the things that must be mastered. Doing so with the onboard camera is just like being in the cockpit. Not sure it could get more "real", I just purchased my first quad and am fascinated with FPV, I wish I still had acreage I could learn on, but will have to settle for large community parks which will be just fine. I hope some day to be as disciplined & as skilled as you all are. Thank you & keep the inspiration coming!

Awesome place to fly. You should add some PAPI lights to the side of the runway!
PAPI or VASI would be interesting to see. But as demonstrated in video, just using runway edge shape to gauge glide slope is sufficient for landing an RC plane.

In full scale, I used to use PAPI to descend. lol
Do you ever practice your radio call, calling each leg of the landing pattern? If you practice that, then it becomes second nature when you fly full scale and you can preserve your mental bandwidth for the flyng part of the mission.
That’s good advice! Trying to formulate what to say in busy air traffic environment is tougher than just flying the plane. I do need the practice. Thanks for the tip!

The OG air unit has a mic built-in for onboard recording of sound. Newest air unit does not.
It's even more fun off grass, where the cues are more hidden.
It would be more challenging for sure. I would not know what cues to look for flare on grass fields. Especially with no defined runway edge...

Hi: I liked the flights you did. That is some good flying. The looks of it has no differnece betw this and a full scale. Watch any IRL video of full scale and it is the same as this vid.
This is a cost effective method to practice stick and rudder skills compared with full scale.
What flight batteries are you using this flight? Are extra batteries needed for the air unit, camera and pna & tilt unit, if yes, what do you recommend?
I used 2x 6s 6000 mAh batteries to fly the Mig-29. No extra battery to power servos of pan & tilt, they just plug into receiver. I use a separate 12V UBEC to power the air unit like this one:

I'm in general a bit opposed to the term glide slope though, but that's certainly not your fault since it is for all practical purposes an industry standard at this point. Still, the term does invite people to believe the landing approach should be an unpowered glide - which it isn't.
Thanks Jan! It’s interesting that training for landing has changed with the times with much more reliable power systems. Back when I started flying RC in 1990. Glow engines quit frequently - I was not very good at tuning. Instructors always taught unpowered glide approaches so that if engine quits, one can still make it back to the runway. My instructor, who flew F-5 in South Vietnam said they do the same for F-5 in case engine quits on approach from battle damage or small arms fire. So “glide slope” did apply back then.
@@motionsic Yep, having the energy to survive engine out scenarios was and still is important in some cases. But is suboptimal in so many other ways
janmb True! Even in 1990, the best/most consistent landers were pattern flyers. They flew shallow powered approaches and had much better control on speed and landing spot. They also had tuned pipes and much higher competence/confidence in their power systems.
@@motionsic Yeah, if you want consistent landings that are not only smooth, but exactly where you want, and regardless of wind, throttle-based landing technique is a must

Hi: I was thinking: the pan and tilt. I think if I were doing mine for the first time, i might just go for the pan. I can set the angle tall enough that i probably could get away without the tilt, which would simplify the build.

@@pokerchannel6991 If you want something that would somewhat resemble your full scale flying experience, Cobra X is not going to cut it. Standard definition analog goggles simply can not compare with high definition Digital FPV from DJI or HDZero. Yes it costs more but the visual experience difference is night and day.

How is the FPV movement so smooth? Almost looks like a VR game
A well designed pan & tilt gimbal (Motionsic BadAss Gimbal) coupled with great head-tracking module (Fatshark Trinity) would result in very fluid and realistic camera movement.
I dont have such a quality video from caddx vista direct recorded via dji goggles v2.
Nebula Pro camera should provide similar visual quality, but goggle recording only go up to 720P while air unit recording go up to 1080P.

2x 6S 6000 mAh battery, this was a full flight mostly at 50% power for 7 ministers.

Hello , Hello , Please help me. I have a MIG 29 80mm aircraft. I have 5000 mAh batteries and I have a problem with the blue battery handle. It is very hot and can cause the plane to burn. What is the problem to know that I only work on one fan because the first battery is empty of charge and the other is fully loaded. Is this the cause of the problem or No? Thank you
If the blue EC5 battery connector is too hot, Don’t fly, not safe. Not sure what the problem is. Could be a bad solder joint. You should never try to fly when the two batteries are at different voltage, not safe.

What is the situation with your website and being able to purchase your pan and tilt system/mount and your upgraded air unit fan/cooling system?
Still working on the website. Servo still delayed due to pandemic soft lock down in Taiwan. Air unit fan/cooling system is still in testing phase - not in planned release of first pan & tilt production run.
@@motionsic That's ok. I wasn't expecting the cooling mod to be an easy one shot victory being available at the beginning. I bought a pan and tilt system from the user Essential RC(english dude). I will be working with that in the mean time. I am thinking about buying a glider or something simple to work with as well to mount my camera to.
larsulrich3356 Essential RC pan & tilt looks very robust. It works well with canopy removed. Mine is designed to fit underneath canopy and only require 40mm diameter cylindrical space to turn around and 50mm height for camera to tilt up 70°. Mine is the most compact one I have seen. I am sure you will be happy with Essential RC version though. Happy FPV flying!

This is the problem I have with rc planes. It's just up - circle - circle - circle - land. The planes look really, REALLY cool but actually controlling them doesn't look that fun to me. The fpv stuff would make the experience a lot more enjoyable but enjoyable circles are still just circles. Figure 8's, loops, rolls...just interest me that much unless I have some good distance. I want to be able to fly into a river canyon and navigate the winding, turning curves for at least a couple thousand yards and I just don't see that happening with today's rc planes. Helicopters can hover, spin around, lift, drop, duck in behind stuff, go to the side (the good ones can but they're very expensive) and rc cars, no matter what happens to them, you only have just a little ways to walk to retrieve it in case of a malfunction.

We fly formation, dogfights and plenty of other exciting things besides circles. The tools and equipment's are there for all different kinds of flying. If you don't have the motivation to do it, you can find a thousand excuses.
