Before you sink your teeth into the review of the WD Black SN850X SSD, it is important to understand that this is not the same as the widely available and industry applauded SN850 SSD. On the face of it, the difference is simply the ‘X’ prefix - Is that really much of a difference? I think it would be pretty fair to say that when the PCIe 4 generation of SSDs hit the consumer market, the one that made the BIGGEST (and earliest) splash was the WD Black SN850. Originally released in Autumn 2020, although it wasn’t the first PCIe4 M.2 SSD, it WAS the first commercially available drive to hit 7,000MB/s (followed incredibly closely by Samsung’s 980 Pro). Now, 2020 was quite a while ago now (give or take a pandemic or two) and in that time a wide variety of top tier (and indeed mid-low tier) brands have expanded in the PCIe 4 SSD tier, challenging the WD Black SSD in terms of performance, durability and price. The 2020 released WD Black SN850, although still hot in the basket of buyers of PS5 storage and regularly on sale during Black Friday and the like, is no longer the groundbreaking drive that it once was. And THIS with where the WD Black SN850X comes in. Now, the SN850X is NOT designed to be a replacement to the SN850. In fact, in recent months, we saw Western Digital roll out the WD Black SN770, a DRAMless, more efficient and more affordable alternative. The SN850X is designed to complete the product family in the PCIe4 M.2 NVMe tier and whereas the SN850 gains notoriety and licencing with the Sony PS5, the WD Black SN850X has its sights squarely on the Premium PC Gamer and Premium Performance tier exclusively (content creators, professional streamers and eSports). But is the WD Black SN850X really that much different? Is this a cash grab or is this a legitimate answer by WD to challengers in the PCIe4 SSD tier? Let’s find out.

Hello, Robbie . . . your numerous and thorough recommendations and tests led me to purchase a few things I'd not heard of until your reviews . . . Terramaster D5-300C (DAS), Nextorage 1TB NVMe, and 3 refurbed HDDs, WD Gold 8TB, HGST 8TB and 10 TB (yeah they can be a bit noisy, but I'm looking for longevity over all) plus I picked up a WD SN850X 2TB after your earlier reviews as it was cheaper than the older WD NVMes at the time. Thanks for all the great info! As a teacher who's been remote teaching since March 2020, I am in awe of your ability to speak knowledgeably and earnestly for long stretches of time. So glad I found your channel. Cheers from NYC
Hello Joe hope youre happy with everything.
What are the requirements to look for when looking into the best thermal pad available for a PlayStation 5 4tb ssd plus Elecgear P5 NVMe Heatsink combination
Would love to hear your take on it plus a video would be nice as well
Are the Thermal Grizzly Carbonaut - Carbon Pads or Kritikal Thermal Pads Extreme Conductivity good options
Or should I pay a little bit more for a pre installed ssd heatsink
hi, Thanks for the video, one question, which controller manufacturer do you think is the safest and has a history that proves its reliability? Between Kioxia, WD, SK Hynix, Silicon Motion, InnoGrit and Phison?
Other current reviews show that it is in fact the fastest drive to load games.
I'm interested in a Kingston Fury ssd for my PS5, what are your thoughts or review on it?
Great video. It seems like the heat issue with the drive isn’t an issue for PS5. Maybe I have that wrong though
you mentioned it runs alil hot....is it to the point of being concerned or just hotter than others? i mean if the temperatures are still at a point that are ok then im good. Im trying to by it for a hardcore game system and i just dont know if this is a good one i should get...im looking for the best i can get to firecuda and 4tb.
What is the best samsung 980 pro with heatsink or the wd black sn850 with heatsink ?
Hey Robbie, are you pre-ordering the Samsung 990 pro on Nov 1st? And how soon will you have a review on your channel?
I would like to know this too!!
Thanks for your great reviews. Just bougtht the 4TB version of this which is now selling for $299.99 on Western Digital and received 15% off for being a student and 16.5% off from a coupon site = 31.5% off. Just arrived a few hours ago. Really looking forward to setting it up. Heard many great things about it. As you know the Samsung 990 PRO doesn't have a 4TB version and also there were many problems with it and the Samsung 980 PRO. But these may have been solved with firmware updates. Just felt more secure buying this drive.
Agree, right now, WD is worth more than Samsung. At this time, Samsung 990 Pro about $20 more than WD Black SN850X per TB. Even if they were the same price, I would go with WD.
heard that they run quite hot when mounted in laptops. Is the heat a problem for these ssds?
Can you play straight from the SSD drive on the PS5? (Apparently you can on the official one. But I can’t find any info on the X)
Will this SSD work to the fullest with 32GB 3200mhz ddr4 RAM?
I bought the 1TB version for my
PC not knowing it’s slower than the 2TB version. I have the heatsink SN850 in my PS5 and a 980 Pro as my PC’s boot drive. The 1TB SN850x is my extra storage/game drive and it’s still very fast in gaming. Control and Spider-Man Remastered load very close to the PS5 version load times
Bought this 2tb for $90 from WD plus paypals 12% cashback...arrives tomorrow...also bought Samsung 2tb 980pro with heatsink for $100. Which should I use for a boot drive and main games install? I would have to buy a heatsink for the 850x is used as a boot drive?
990 pro or this for the PS5?
Is there any difference from the 980 pro?
After watching your videos I decided to get either this or a firecuda for my ps5. Ending up getting the firecuda 2tb simply necuase it's in stock!
which better WD_BLACK SN850X or Samsung 990 pro ?
I just got one of these and I swear to God it was a wd black sticker 2tb on a totally different and blue sticker model of drive. Thankfully best buy didn't hassle me for the exchange
Strange why the 4TB drive don't come with a heat spreader, anyone know why ?
Does the SN850X output higher temperatures inside the PS5 than the SN850? Is the Sabrent SSD cover still effective for it?
Will you be reviewing the Samsung 990 Pro on PS5?
I have a couple of these, and the read speed is stuck between 2 and 3 gb/s
OT : Robbie, I'm a home NAS user but have always avoided remote access because the risks just outweighed the benefits. I recently explored Tailscale for remote access and it appears to work extremely well with far less risk than the built in remote access apps from QNAP and Synology, no open ports, and far more straight forward than garden variety VPN's. And far faster. It was dead easy to install and setup. I have no connection to Tailscale and no axe to grind but I found what seems like a brilliant solution to an old, complex problem. Thought you might want to check it out and maybe do a video.
Which drive is better for speed and longevity - WD Black SN850X vs Samsung 980 Pro?
WD for sure.
What are the best internal SSD for those that can’t do a firmware update?
Seagate Firecuda 530 seems to be the only ssd you can install without needing to do a firmware update since on their website its just unscrew, insert done
Got the 4TB SN850X for $400 after taxes on Cyber Monday deal. This will be my game drive on my PC, can't wait to try it.
How is your SSD 4tb going ? I just ordered mine.
@@nallanosbor It's awesome man, games load real fast even compared to my 3rd gen SSD.
If I put 2x 1Tb Sn850x nvmes into my qnap ts-673a, shall I see significant performance? Right now Im not using any nvmes.
Will boost faster than your TFT gets lights, 2-3 seconds
@NASCopares May you or anyone else could please tell me if you have seen SN850X 4TB in your hand that, is 4TB single sided or it is double sided SSD? I am seeing conflicting comments, some says it is single sided and some saying it is double sided! Even in official data sheet they have mentioned exactly same thickness of SN850X regardless the capacity, that means according to data sheet 1TB and 4TB has same thickness, my laptop cannot accept double sided NVMe that's why I want to be sure if 4TB is one sided (I know 1 or 2TB are one sided)
same question
Picked up the 4Tb version for $299($399 can) last week
I'm a Samsung Pro kind of guy but I think you might have talked me into this. I could use something bigger than a terabyte now and the heat sink 2 terabyte version is looking just right
Same in regarding M.2 I have on my 2 year old gaming rig Samsung 970 evo and pro but right now I ordered the WD SN870x 2 days ago instead of buying 2 990pro due to the health
degrading issue going on I may buy one but for using it in my secondary drive for gaming only and not OS the sn870 one will be for my OS due to its fast loading time which beats the Firecuda 530
... but the Samsungs are made in China and more slow! WDs are from Malaysia
هل يعمل بشكل جيد و متوافق و بدون اي خطأ او مشاكل مع PS5 Does it work well and compatible and without any errors or problems with PS5
you should give alternative when you find some flaws into a product.. alternative that dont have the same flaws
I just got the 2TB sn850x for $90, great deal imo
Nice video! The 1TB is 94,-€ at the moment
I recomment Kingston Fury Renegate 1GB for 74 € , it is made in Taiwan
Can I still use it for my ps5?
there's no reason you can't.
Him : the sn850x will be more expensive.
2023 : sn850x 2tb is almost $40 cheaper.
i couldn't find many places that sold the SN850 2Tb
Always go directly to the company that creates what you are looking for since they are the best option of getting said object
If you wait for Black Friday, the 2tb SN850X was on sale for $209 on both Best Buy & Amazon.
@@richardoh3666 Hopefully Amazon has most 4tb PlayStation 5 compatible ssds on sale during those times as well
That being said for Best Buy you do not have to wait for Black Friday they will start their sales at the first of the month for the entire month to try to avoid overcrowding as confirmed by the regional director in my area
@@noverwolf9 Sadly Western Digital does not offer a heatsink for their currently on sale $494.99 from $699.99 4TB Black SN850X NVMe SSD only for their 1TB or 2TB variations
Most likely I will try to find a PlayStation 5 compatible 4tb ssd elsewhere with a pre installed heatsink considering I lack the knowledge to make an informative decision thus avoid frying the ssd by acquiring an unreliable or a too thin thermal pad for it
I was thinking of going with the Grizzly Thermal Carbonaut - Carbon Thermal Pad combining it with the Elecgear PS5 NVMe SSD Heatsink for better results
Too late, I got it over the weekend! 😊
WD !!!!
Getting this. Does it have a heatsink i don't wanna have issues on PS5.
1 and 2 tb have heatsinks. 4tb doesn't.
@@mydogeatspuke Yeah had to return why do they make it without lol. Gonna get the one with heatsink. Amazon hide it so i didn't know about it
@@birdz9252 just get the Sabrent PS5 heatsink for it? It's made to fit the bay perfectly.
@@mydogeatspuke Well i already returned it and i didn't wanna get an off brand one when the heatsink for it was only $10 more
@@birdz9252 k
180 euros on German Amazon at the moment for 2TB SN850X.
Picked up the same deal excessively long shipping time for me though, it’s saying over a month 💀
If I were getting an m.2 right now, I would probably get the Firecuda for the high TBW.
Does the high TBW really matter if you're using it exclusively on the PS5?
@@THKJamesMaxx No it doesn't. All you're doing is deleting and saving games on your ssd. You would have to delete and save 300 times a day every day for 5 years for your ssd to fail. At most, you'll be deleting and saving a couple of times a week. TBW is unnecessary for ps5 users.
@@richardoh3666 More like million times every day for 5 years... Save games don't take much space. You'd need to install and uninstall whole's drive's worth of data every day for 5 years to get it fail. And even then, often SSDs last lot longer than their rated TBW is. Rated TBW is just what the manufacturer is willing to cover by warranty in that 5 year time.
I am an owner of the two terabyte version and I have had nothing but problems with the drive I'm actually going to RMA it very very soon
The game mode makes things stutter I've had freezing I've had crashing all just garbage
I have a secondary drive Samsung 980 pro has no problems all games that stutter on the WD black or crash I moved them over to the second drive and they work perfectly I've even had my USB port malfunction I am an owner of very very high-end hardware i-94900 KS rtx4090 rog Maximus Apex encore motherboard I really hate how this drive has a game mode I think it's one of the dumbest things they ever could have did all you do is reset your whole system turning game mode on and off to see if you still crash or have any problems and it just becomes a monotonous circle of doom
I'm married and have children. I settled for the crucial p5 1tb to have enough budget for a msi Optix MAG322CQR. The P5 was on sale for
a Samsung 980 Pro for $170 or a WD Black SN850X for $200? what do you all think? ( I put comments below that you can thumbs up for your vote )
Samsung 980 Pro for $170
WD Black SN850X for $200
I asking to myself the same question!!! I can't get an answer!! Except for the heatsink version in the SAMSUNG 980 Pro 1TB model is little cheaper in my case and It takes only 1 week to get it in my house.
@@ambigus7 Both are good options I say hold off until black friday while you save up for a better deal while in the meantime just use any ehd as cold storage
If it’s for the ps5 wd for sure.
Game Mode 2.0 - come on man, that's blatantly just another gimmick which is going to cause more problems than it solves - I'd love to see a SINGLE piece of evidence to support Game Mode 2.0 utilization. And I mean that, I'd actually love to see it.
The two main reasons I’m buying this one are, 1) It’s the best one that comes in 4TB storage. The SN750 comes in 4TB but it’s too darn expensive. And 2) It is the best one suited for macOS compared to the Samsung.
*WD 2TB is 2TB Free Space in Real, not 1,8TB like other SSDs, so you have extra SSD-Space for additional more 3-4 Games ;)*
YES, but the price is a bit hard to swallow
SO, I plan to wait until Black Friday before I buy.
!
Sound is not in sync with your lips.
Something in your system maybe? Works great here.
Maybe the ping times are too high. You need to connect to the the nearest server
Too bad no firmware updates for MacOS users as WD does not see fit to port WD dashboard to MacOS.
Why don't you ever do benchmark comparison videos? What a missed opportunity.
He does have a video for this card benchmarking PS5 usage. Shows consistent read speeds of 6500MB/s
