The kids were absolutely brilliant. Of course, the next year (as in the video) some of the boys I saw in 1982 had moved on as their voices broke.
Yes, is very good soloist, this is the WSK we love to see and hear. Good voices, happy faces. Actually I have contact with a former vienna choir boy from Mexico, (2001-2004)I saw him in a video of an Indian folk song.
I second that. Would have LOVED to hear him solo on Standchen (see his channel) from maybe, the first three or four rows of the audience. Rock on Rene!
The name of the choir under the Hapsburg Emperors was "Königliche und Kaiserliche Hofsingknabe" -- Royal and Imperial Court Boy Singers. Another clarification -- Joseph Haydn was actually not a member of this choir, but the St. Stephens Cathedral choir in Vienna. Both the chapel choir and the cathedral had the same director at this time though, and he often used the cathedral boys to augment the chapel choir at events at the palace.
Hi gzztal, The Brucknerchoir made presentations in USA in 1982, were probably to Mexico too. It's very close! Maybe you did see them?! But it seems that this time was not René playing Mitzi.

Is funny to see the boy in 4:19 who lost the sequence for instants, and keep smiling; great job of soloist, specially the one next to the piano. Do you know his name?
Thank you, Orion! I was wondering, though, what prompts a boy to want to do an audition. If they saw and heard the WSK singing, and liked it so much that they wanted to sing like that too? Or if family members spotted that the boy had talent and encouraged them. Or if they just woke up one morning and said "I want to be a WSK"! In Almost Angels, it seemed as if most of the boys had already had singing lessons of some sort. Maybe I am too curious, but I would like to know!
Most professional choirs require some background of experience in church choirs or similar scenarios. The boy also has to possess a clear, attractive voice and a certain amount of knowledge of music theory, such as recognizing and identifying a played or sung note. When they are accepted, around age 8, they then are enrolled in the classes which train them very well in theory, along with a complete education. They practice singing many hours a week, and each boy receives personal voice lessons. Also, they are probably required to learn to play at least one instrument. They learn to pronounce languages, English, Latin, etc. I think that the desire to enter the Choir largely comes from the fact that many of them come from musical families, with parents who sing or play professionally.

Exquisite singing. This was the Vienna Boys Choir when it was second to none. I would love to wave a magic wand and restore the VBC to its former brilliant glory. Forget the mediocre group they've become now.
