I grew up with the Vienna Boys' Choir, went to their conert every time they came to Japan. This 1983 Chior was one of the most memorable boys with Rene Cerncec with his heart melting smile and voice! I was lucky enough to watch them from the front row seat, thank you so much for posting this, watched on TV as well but couldn't tape it. What a treat to be able to watch them here!

A feast for the eye as well as the ear. This is an exceptional performance by the boys and choirmaster and an excellent job of recording it. Thank you kawaiimiffy for uploading this video series.

This is "Unter Donner und Blitz" ("Thunder and Lightning Polka") the way it SHOULD be sung, with lots of bounce and spirit. The kids in this video did a super job, and watch the expressions on their faces...they seemed to be enjoying themselves.
The current Vienna Boys Choir can't hold a candle to THESE kids!

Totally agree! I am quite disappointed with the recent quality of VBC. I used to have cassette tapes of VBC from the 80s, and they sound very similar to the quality of this video. How I miss the old VBC!

Emilie Lin why have the quality of the Vienna boys choir declined? The English now have better choirs?

Thank you, Miffy, for uploading these! Such an excellent choir! And the quality of the videos is very good too.

This was the choirs peak. They are no where this level today.

This actuall choir was at its peak. The first row at the left was full of soloists. Only the best of the best were allowed to go to Japan.

They are in big trouble nowadays.

@@m-hayek1985 For some time the owners of the Wiener Sängerknaben have appointed directors and faculty who seemed very autocratic and earned a reputation for not listening to the parents, other professionals, and former choristers. This infighting harmed the morale of the choir. The character of the choir has been radically changed by adding girls who, of course, mature sooner than boys by a couple of years before puberty and all the girls are bigger than the boys. The look is all wrong. More recently, since the Covid pandemic, scores of concerts were cancelled and the effect of this has been to deprive the choir of necessary funds. This is a big worry for the owners. It is no longer just a Boys Choir. It is a private school and does not receive state funding. Naturally, morale is rock bottom by comparison to what it had be decades ago.

@@jean6872 when did they add girls? What a silly idea

Could it be that fewer boys want to join choirs nowadays - so the talent lies wasted?
I personally don't think so much that boarding schools are passe. I went to one myself and really enjoyed it. It's a shame that parents aren't willing to let their children live in such an environment where their musicality can really flourish. I think it's the touring for weeks on end which is probably more stressful and difficult.
